Take a Bow, America
dulios
by dulios  11-8-2008    9
It can be easy in such a moment of triumph to lose sight of the agony wrought by the unrelieved evil of racism and to forget how crucial a role anti-black racism played in shaping American life since the first slaves were dumped ashore 400 years ago. Blacks have been holding fast to the promise of America for all that time. Not without anger. Not without rage. But with a fidelity that in the darkest moments — those moments when the flow of blood seemed like it would never stop, when enslaved families were wrenched apart, when entire communities were put to the torch, when the breeze put the stiffened bodies of lynched victims in motion, when even small children were murdered and Dr. King was taken from us — even in those dire moments, African-Americans held fast to the promise of America with a fidelity that defied logic.

At 17.41p.m. Hans Hedtoft informs "we are sinking slowly" and at 18.06 the trawler picks up the beginning of an SOS after which there was no longer connection to the Greenlandic ship. No wreckage could positively be identified as coming from Hans Hedtoft. And not until 9 months after the loss, the only piece of wreckage washed ashore on Iceland: a lifebuoy. The Hans Hedtoft sank 40 years ago.

McCain To Katrina Victims In 2005: You're On Your Own
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-1-2008
It must be nice to have staffers writing that stuff for you. Too bad he spent the months to follow leading the Republican charge against every Senate bill that would have actually helped Katrina victims or mandated investigations on how the Bush administration could have blown disaster response so thoroughly. Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden jumped immediately to the aid of hurricane victims in the week after the 2005 disaster, authoring S.Amdt. 1661 "…to provide emergency funding for victims of Hurricane Katrina." But with John McCain's help, the Republican-led Senate shot down the funding on a 41-56 vote with McCain voting against, while Biden and Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama voted for the funding. the Republicans wanted no part of it and despite his post-Katrina pledge to "do all that is necessary to fund essential relief and recovery efforts and help those in need," John McCain was right there to shoot down every initiative that would have

Hurricane Gustav: 2 Million Evacuate New Orleans Area
blueridge
by blueridge  8-31-2008
After Katrina, now this. Live radio coverage here. Last night they said it could strengthen to category 4 or 5 with winds up to 150 mph and a deluge of rain. Recent reports say it may not as it now remains now at Category 3 level. The warnings made it clear that everyone in New Orleans should evacuate, and the massive exodus is already under way.

Hurricane Dolly Bears Down on Texas
Wisco
by Wisco  7-23-2008    9
Dolly is described as a "slow-moving" storm, meaning that there may be more damage than would normally be expected from a Category 2, mostly in the form of flooding. LiveScience.com : Flooding, which can result from both torrential rains and the ocean surf a storm can push ashore, is what officials in Texas were most concerned about after Dolly made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane at 9 am EDT on Wednesday. Residents of the Rio Grande Valley have been warned of potential severe flooding and possible levee breaks. The National Hurricane Center predicted that Dolly could drop a total of 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 centimeters) of rainfall in the next few days, with some isolated spots potentially getting soaked by up to 15 inches.

D-Day In Context
merrie
by merrie  6-7-2008
Perhaps that's because it would draw parallels between those who stormed the coast of France in 1944 and those who are fighting now -- and winning -- a war against radical Islam. Unlike those who braved their way into Hitler's Fortress Europe, the young Americans fighting today's battles reap few accolades from the potentates of the press or the liberal "leadership" in Washington. A recent editorial warned about Iraq: "Don't look now, but the U.S.-backed government and army may be winning the war." And it took to task those who comprise "the 'this-war-is-lost' caucus." The victories over al-Qaida and the Shiite militias in Iraq, against the Taliban and Osama bin Laden's remnant in Afghanistan, have been won by U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen and Marines -- and the new allies in these countries. Those who landed on the beaches of Normandy 64 years ago were American heroes. So are those who serve today.

Myanmar’s Delta: Water World
BobbyDelray

On April 15, rivers and lakes are sharply defined against a backdrop of vegetation and fallow agricultural land…. The wetlands near the shore are a deep blue green. Cyclone Nargis came ashore across the mouths of the Irrawaddy and followed the coastline northeast. The entire coastal plain is flooded in the May 5 image.

Weird sex: Giant squid
dakotayii
by dakotayii  3-31-2008    2
But males get round their inferior size by being endowed with a particularly long penis, which means they can inject the female without having to get too close to her chomping beak. The male's sexual organ is actually a bit like a high-pressure fire hose and is normally nearly as long as his body - excluding legs and head. "But having such a big penis does have one drawback: it seems that co-ordinating eight legs, two feeding tentacles and a huge penis, whilst fending off an irate female, is a bit too much to ask, and one of the two males stranded on the Spanish coast had accidentally injected himself with sperm packages in the legs and body. And this does not seem to have been an isolated incident since two of the eight males that had stranded in the north-east Atlantic before had also accidentally inseminated themselves
