POPSThe Power of Dignity This article is both pragmatic and powerful. When I read it, in ODE magazine, I retyped it and sent it to people. Now that it's available online, I'm posting it here for your consumption. One of the things I most respect about Arch Bishop Tutu is his ability to see beyond normal constructs and into functional applied solutions. Ideas like "forgiveness" can be too large to embrace and too hard to embody. What if we let such overwhelming constructs go in deference to more concrete steps, like simply listening to the experience of our "enemies". It's almost like a post-modern revision of Stockholm Syndrome -- to set out with the intention of viewing one's "enemy" as an empathetic character within his own context. It doesn't diminish the impact of my enemy's choices on my life, but it can change radically how I live in response to that -- by enriching my perspective and depolarizing our postures. Becoming human to one another is the first and most important step.

POPSThe CIA influence on Hollywood The model for this is the defence department's "open" but barely publicised relationship with Hollywood. The Pentagon, for decades, has offered film-makers advice, manpower and even hardware - including aircraft carriers and state-of-the-art helicopters. All it asks for in exchange is that the US armed forces are made to look good. So in a previous Scott film, Black Hawk Down, a character based on a real-life soldier who had also been a child rapist lost that part of his backstory when he came to the screen.

POPS On Creativity, fulfillment and flow... TED -Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi asks, "What makes a life worth living?" Noting that money cannot make us happy, he looks to those who find pleasure and lasting satisfaction in activities that bring about a state of "flow."

POPSIAD, Internet Addiction Disorder "US academics have found that more than one in eight Americans showed at least one possible sign of problematic internet use, with some web surfers already starting to seek medical help." "The Chinese manual would be the first of its kind in the world, adding to the controversy over whether compulsive internet use should be officially viewed as a mental disorder." I think that eventually we will have to recognize it as an added capability of the human, the netting/wired sense or a sort. certainly not a disorder.

POPSAn America Led by San Francisco, Las Vegas, And Hyde Park Values? A moderate Republican President will be the only balance we have to a House and Senate controlled by the far left. If America chose to elect Barack Obama, they'll be electing a man that the National Journal ranked as the most extreme Senator in office, to left of even Vermont's Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders. Elevated from one of the most unpopular Congresses in American history, a President Obama would rubber-stamp the decisions of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Are you ready for an America led by San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Hyde Park values? Americans need John McCain as President, because what is best for America is a balanced government, neither red, nor blue, but overall, purple.

POPSPalin asks if Democrats think terrorists are 'the good guys' WTF? This Bush/Cheney style of demonizing is what is wrong with this country. Mind you, if McCain/Palin win, the cultural divide in this country will only increase because they will continue to demonize and question the patriotism of anyone who does not agree with them. If I question the bloated Pentagon budget, I must hate America, including my parents, my brothers and sisters and all of their children, my grandmother, all my friends, all of their families, and everyone in my hometown. I want to destroy it all. Do people on the right really think this about people on the left? Without knowing me, without knowing the good I have done in this country and in this world? That I really, really want to destroy all I love because I dare to question Bush/Cheney and/or the military/industrial complex and it's continued reliance on perpetual conflict?!? It's absolutely fuckin' ludicrous!

POPSGuilt By Association in North Carolina First its the McCain campaign. Now its Elizabeth Dole. How shameful and how shameless. These tactics are wrong, they degrade the so-called "conservative" movement. In this case they debase Christians and God fearing people generally. Kay Hagan is a Sunday School teacher. This kind of campaigning is disgusting. Do they not know how damaging this is to themselves and to the political process? How can they look themselves in the mirror? These people are destroying American values so much they might as well be terrorists themselves. Joe McCarthy is hootin an hollerin in his grave.

POPSAU ask IRS to investigate N.C. Baptist funding of political rally. With so many stories like this popping up this year, I'm really starting to like the idea of abolishing religious tax exemptions. They should only maintain exemption for the money they get for social assistance programs. They want a nice big fancy church, they should pay taxes on that just like everyone else. They set up a shelter for the homeless, as with secular programs, they receive tax exemption.

POPS 'Twas The Night Before Elections ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Greed of 'The ONE'~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ And, according to an e-mail plea to supporters, tonight’s the absolute deadline to donate $10 more and receive your special edition Official Obama-Biden car magnet. Having now collected more than $605 million altogether, the freshman senator shows no concern over the appearance of buying the presidency. Imagine for a moment the national political conversation that could be going on now if rich Republicans had raked in that much loot for one campaign. With $605 million already, Obama asks only $10 more from each of us Top of the Ticket ~ Los Angeles Times What with the big media in his pocket, his puppet masters should really love him… http://flightpundit.com/archives/2008/10/23/greed-of-the-one/

POPS8 Ways To Ease Yourself Out Of Nosy Questions Without Being Rude It depends on what the meaning of “is” is Take Bill Clinton’s Grand Jury testimony, for example, ATTORNEY: Whether or not Mr. Bennett knew of your relationship with Ms. Lewinsky, the statement that there was “no sex of any kind in any manner, shape or form, with President Clinton,” was an utterly false statement. Is that correct? CLINTON: It depends upon what the meaning of the word “is” is. If the-if he-if “is” means “is and never has been and is not” –that is one thing. If it mean there is none, that was completely true statement. Now how can one retort to such answer?

POPSWho's Lori Berenson ? Lori Berenson is a US citizen currently being held as a political prisoner in Cajamarca, Perú. After serving nearly five years in harsh Peruvian jails high in the Andes, her conviction for treason against Perú and her life sentence were overturned. In June 2001 she was cleared of terrorism-related charges but convicted of collaboration, and sentenced to twenty years in prison in a trial that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights claims completely violated her rights.

POPSStupid Jokes A middle age lady has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she has a near-death experience. During that experience she sees her guardian angel and asks if this is her time. The angel says no and explains that she has another 30-40 years to live. Upon her recovery she decides to just stay in the hospital for a few more days and have a facelift, liposuction and a tummy tuck. She even has someone come in and change her hair color. She figures since she's got another 30 or 40 years she might as well make the most of it. She walks out the hospital after the last operation and is killed by an ambulance speeding up to the hospital. She arrives in heaven again, sees her guardian angel and says, "I thought you said I had another 30-40 years!!" The angel replies, "Sorry. I didn't recognize you."
