POPSWashington Docs Oppose I-1000 Their position ignores the fact that the person is dying. There is no possibility to heal and avoid death. It will come eventually and if I'm terminal I want to be in charge when it does.

POPSA New Fight to Legalize Euthanasia The last major organized debate I was involved in was about Euthanasia. We debated the quality of live vs. the sanctity of life. I came out of it believing that "sanctity" is a man-made concept and applying this term to "life" is akin to arguing that people should live with misery and pain just because you feel they should and can offer up nothing tangible. But a man dieing in a hospital, suffering through unimaginable pain, now that can be quantified where sanctity can not. So the argument of quality vs. sanctity is specious. Our lives are our own and those would tell you what to do with yours because of their "beliefs" are an enemy to dignity.

POPSInmates’ Words: The Poems of Guantanamo The publication of an anthology of works, composed on paper cups by detainees, provides a harrowing insight into the torments and fading hopes of prisoners. "Aami al Haj, a Sudanese national, was a journalist covering the war in Afghanistan for al-Jazeera television, when, in 2001, he was arrested stripped of his passport and press card and handed over to US forces. He was tortured at both Bagram air base and Kandahar before being transferred to Guantanamo Bay. The US military says he was a financial courier for Chechen rebels and that he assisted al-Qa’ida but has offered no evidence to support the claims. “When I heard pigeons cooing in the trees, Hot tears covered my face,” he wrote from his prison cell. “They have monuments to liberty And freedom of opinion, which is well and good. But I explained to them, that Architecture is not justice."

POPSLethal Egomania & the Glory of Politics Very often activists become so wrapped up in the romance of a cause and seduced by their own image that they forget the issue that they started by advocating, and move into a realm of pure narcissistic idealism. And it is the media, with its voyeuristic bent for sensationalism over reason, that enables many of these well-meaning people to become vacuous soap-box pundits shouting to hear their own voice.

POPSThe Ultimate Double Standard I happen to be one of those people who truly believes life is precious. As someone who lives with two serious chronic illnesses and continuous sever pain, I continue to fight to live my life to its fullest, and to remain active and as productive as possible. However, I also believe that every human being is entitled to dignity in their lives and a decent quality of life. When those two things are absent from my life, I would like the option of deciding when I have had enough. I should be entitled to the same consideration as a race horse, or a house pet. I do not believe anyone would consider seriously the act of ending their lives lightly. It is a tortuous decision and it is an act that should not be carried-out in haste. But the option should be available, and once the decision is made, the person's doctor should be permitted to help the patient end his/her life with grace, dignity and loving care.

POPSKevorkian to Be Paroled in June My mother had hyperkalemia last year due to a rare side effect of her blood pressure medicine. Her potassium levels were over .7 and it was a miracle she didn't die. The doctor at the hospital told us Dr. Kevorkian used high doses of potassium to kill his patients.
