POPSImmigrants Being Locked Up - Indefinitely? Out of Spite? Interesting that the world has many defenders of free trade or fair trade but fewer and fewer support free movement of people. I guess it's just the money that those folks favor the free movement of and keep the poor, the oppressed, and the different away from my door!

POPSFORTRESS EUROPE- no more Iraqi Refugees Stockholm, where 18,600 applications for asylum were submitted in 2007 alone, is gradually closing its doors now that Sweden's highest court has ruled that there is no longer an armed conflict in Iraq. Asylum-seekers must now provide detailed proof of persecution, a practically impossible task for many Iraqis. Despite the millions in assistance it receives from Brussels, Athens feels overburdened by the system. After personally inspecting the country's facilities for refugees, European Parliament MEP Kreissl-Dörfler alleged that the Greeks shove thousands of asylum-seekers "into inhumane deportation camps that one can only enter in rubber boots."

POPSRudd changed Australia: Can Obama change USA?
"There is a new mood in the country, a sense of rebirth and regeneration. After living through 11 years of conservative rule under Mr Rudd's predecessor, John Howard, many people say that Australia feels like a fundamentally different place. Some say that Mr Howard's policies made them ashamed of their nationality. Now, for the first time in years, they feel proud to be Australian." "A week later, the new government scrapped another of Mr Howard's ideological cornerstones: the ominously named "Pacific Solution", under which hundreds of asylum-seekers were intercepted at sea, before they reached Australian waters, and shipped to remote Pacific nations to be processed. The policy was supposed to deter "illegal immigrants", and it helped Mr Howard to win an election. Then last week, as soon as parliament resumed after the summer break, Mr Rudd apologised to the "Stolen Generations" – Aboriginal people forcibly separated from their families as children."

POPSSA police arrest 1,500 in church The South African Police now seem to be playing a game of "blame the victim" was we are seeing scenes that we have not seen since aparthneid ended in 1994. The government has watched as Zimbabwe turns into a fascist dictatorship and hundreds of thousands of refugees have poured into South Africa. The SA government has said very little to the government that has driven them out, but instead treasts the refugees almost as badly as they are treated at home. During the South African liberation struggle South African exiles found homes in neighbouring countries, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mocambique, as well as places further away such as Britain, Sweden and other European countries. Yet now when we have our freedom and others flee to us for asylum, we persecute them,

POPS Iraqi Christian Political Refugees "Black-Listed" Christian refugees who have worked for the United States-led coalition in Iraq have run into a brick wall at the U.N. agency in Jordan that has been hired by the State Department to process asylum seekers, Newsmax has learned from interviews with over 100 refugees, U.N. aid workers, and U.S. diplomats in Jordan. Scores of refugees told the visiting U.S. delegation that when UNHCR workers discovered they were Christian, they refused to examine their documents. Many had brought letters and certificates of appreciation from U.S. contractors or the military to prove that they had worked for coalition, but were unable to present them. United National High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), which is being paid tens of million of dollars by the United States to process the refugees, has recommended just 2,000 out of the estimated 750,000 Iraqis now living in Jordan for resettlement to the United States.

POPS Mexicans are flooding into Canada Most of the recent arrivals are from Florida, where Jacques Sinjuste, general director of the Jerusalem Haitian Community Centre in Naples, has been accused of grossly misleading would-be migrants of their chances of success in Canada's refugee system. The truth is far different: only 13 per cent of Mexican asylum claims were accepted in the first six months of 2007.

POPSAyaan Hirsi Ali I am in awe of this woman. Her story is amazing ! "Her ordeal has caused an outcry in the Netherlands, a country already uneasy with its recent waves of immigrants and asylum seekers, now representing almost 10 percent of the population. Many Dutch see the threats as an intolerable assault on the country's democratic principles. The threats have also intensified a fierce debate — one that can be heard these days across Europe — about what moral values and rules of behavior immigrants should be expected to share."

POPSComments from Ayaan Hirsi Ali at Harvard My personal favorite: "In our countries, government terrorized you. Here, government served the people. Governments did nasty things to you, they terrorized you, they took your money. In the West, they did things like take your garbage away. It was unthinkable.”
