Hall, 27, is a rising star on the world running circuit and made headlines last year by running the London marathon in a stunning 2:06:17. Marathon legend Bill Rodgers won the New York City four years in a row from 1976 to 1979, and Alberto Salazar took walked away with successive victories from 1980-82. The marathon, which began in 1970 with a mere 127 runners, now hosts 38,000 athletes from around the globe, according to the marathon's Web site. Known for its diverse, punishing terrain, the annual event spans all five of New York's City's boroughs, finishing in the heart of Central Park. POPSRunning Doc: "Do the salt" to avoid hyponatremia More: * Follow the fluid recommendations….drink only when thirsty! * Include pretzels or a salted bagel in your pre-race meal. * Favor a sports drink that has some sodium in it over water, which has none. * In the days before the race, add salt to your foods (provided that you don't have high blood pressure or your doctor has restricted your salt intake). * Eat salted pretzels during the last half of the race. * Do the salt! Carry two small salt packets with you (the kind found in fast food restaurants), and before the race and again during the last half of the race (marathon or half-marathon) consume a single packet under your tongue. * After the race, drink a sports drink that has sodium in it and eat some pretzels or a salted bagel. * Stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories 24 hours before your race and do not start again until 6 hours post-race.

POPSProfessors want UCB to stop subsidizing sports programs at expense of academics More: "The data is eye-opening and quite troubling - athletic expenditures are rising three or four times faster than academic budgets," said William "Brit" Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland. He's co-chairman of the Knight Commission, which on Monday released a survey of university presidents' views on the cost of programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the nation's 120 top college football teams. "We're painfully aware of the global fiscal implosion and the impact it's having on academic institutions," Kirwan said. "As a result, 75 percent of presidents say we can't continue on this path."… The last time the athletes ran up a multiyear debt - owing the university $31.4 million by 2007 - the bill was forgiven, according to a written explanation of Cal's athletics budget and policies prepared in response to questions from the faculty.

POPSSports nutrition: carbs give you fuel More: Consuming carbs as soon as tolerable after hard exercise enhances muscle glycogen replacement because- 1) the blood flow to the muscles is faster immediately after exercise, so carbs can get carried to the muscles faster; 2) the muscles are better able to take up the carbs because of increased sensitivity to insulin, the hormone that helps transport carbs into muscles. Plan to have banana, fruit yogurt, fruit smoothie, and/or fig bars readily available.

POPSMilitary Service Training Ground For Sexual Predation This article is quite comprehensive in scope and deserves a full reading. A few more paragraphs from it follow this remark. "Yet for decades, in spite of the terrible numbers, the military has managed with astonishing success to get away with responding to grievances like Krause's with silence, or denial, or by blaming "a few bad apples." But when individual soldiers take the blame, the system gets off the hook. And it can be shown that the patterns of military sex crimes are old and widespread -- for generations, military service has transformed large numbers of American boys into sexual predators. So it seems reasonable to ask if perhaps there is something about military culture or training or experience that can be identified as causative, and then, perhaps, changed."

POPSJeff Galloway: Food - the importance of "prefueling" before exercise
More: If you fear undesired pit stops or gastric distress, train your intestinal track to tolerate food. Start with one saltine, or one pretzel, and then work up to a more substantial intake… Even if you are working out for less than an hour, you should still eat a pre-run snack and drink water. Athletes who ate no breakfast, biked hard for 50 minutes and then sprinted for 10 minutes to the finish were able to sprint 6% harder when they consumed adequate water vs. minimal water… One way to organize your pre-run fueling is to eat part of the upcoming meal prior to your workout. For example— • If you run in the morning, enjoy a banana before your workout, and then afterwards refuel with the rest of your breakfast, such as a bagel and a yogurt. • If you run at lunch, eat half a sandwich before your run and then enjoy the rest of your lunch afterwards. • For afternoon or afterwork sessions, enjoy a granola bar or some graham crackers pre-run, and then refuel with chocolate m
