POPSRemember Salem? From the article: The religious leaders offer help to the families whose children are named as witches, but at a price. The churches run exorcism, or "deliverance", evenings where the pastors attempt to drive out the evil spirits. Only they have the power to cleanse the child of evil spirits, they say. The exorcism costs the families up to a year's income.

POPSOxford Word Of The Year 2008: Hyperlmiling
mileage or even great mileage, hypermilers seek to push their gas tanks to the limit and achieve hypermileage, exceeding EPA ratings for miles per gallon. Many of the methods followed by hypermilers are basic common sense—drive the speed limit, avoid hills and stop-and-go traffic, maintain proper tire pressure, don’t let your car idle, get rid of excess cargo—but others practiced by some devotees may seem slightly eccentric: • driving without shoes (to increase the foot’s sensitivity on the pedals) • parking so that you don’t have to back up to exit the space • “ridge-riding” or driving with your tires lined up with the white line at the edge of the road to avoid driving through water-filled ruts in the road when it’s raining The hypermiling movement has been criticized for its alleged promotion of driving tactics that are considered dangerous or illegal, such as overinflating tires, rolling through stop signs, and following closely behind large vehicles to cut down on wind re

POPSReligion - Emotional or Spiritual A negative conception of religion. I had high hopes for this heading and was completely disappointed in the discussion that followed. the only emotions the writer discussed was guilt, fear, and anger. My emotional tie to my Unitarian religion has a large emotional component. The emotions of love, hope and compassion. Maybe I have a spiritual understanding but because that concept is undefined by the writer I'm not sure what difference he makes between spiritual and emotional. There are many out there who are open minded about their search for truth and meaning, who earnestly attempt to figure it out for themselves what its all about. Not all religious people have closed minds and it is closed minded to think so.

POPSAnother View Earlier I clipped the TED video about this movement. Here's another take on this issue. I'm on the fence somewhat with this. On one hand, finding a way to reach fundamentalists and attempt to weaken their message seems like a good idea even if it doesn't address the problems with religion as a whole. Then we have Myer's take on this here which is much more antagonistic. Which will have more of an impact? I honestly don't know.

POPSDesert danger forces Australian outback shutdown Been there, done that and had no desire to do it ever again. We reached Delhousie Hot Springs and the hot springs were refreshing. Next morning too hot. Bodies had cooled down, I suppose. Gold miners walked through this country as part of the 500 mile trip from the railhead to Arltunga, west of Alice Springs. Some didn't make it. Those going back due to illness either died or were fit by the time they reached the Oodnadatta "hospital", where a midwife waited.

POPSThe Islamist Role in the 2008 Canadian Elections Hashmi runs an Islamic school for girls. Hashmi wears a full niqab (face covering) and encourages young girls to emulate her. She is known for promoting a very conservative Islamic ideology that is based on Wahhabism. She, like other Islamists is in favor of Sharia in Canada. The results of the Canadian election were an eye-opener because all Muslim candidates from all parties lost, with the exception of Yasmin Ratansi, who for some time has been trying to distance herself from her Muslim identity Most ordinary Canadians, well-meaning and decent folks, are fed up with demands for unreasonable accommodation and are no longer willing to put up with politics disguised as religion in the public sphere. Of course, the usual suspects are already screaming Islamophobia - again. There is no rampant Islamophobia in Canada - only an attempt at gradual Islamization.

POPSBarack Obama, Fabian Socialist He's telling the truth when he says that he doesn't agree with Bill Ayers' violent bombing tactics, but it's a tactical disagreement. Why use dynamite when mass media and community organizing work so much better? Who needs Molotov when you've got Saul Alinski? So here is the playbook: The left will identify, freeze, personalize and polarize an industry, probably health care. It will attempt to nationalize one-fifth of the U.S. economy through legislative action. They will focus, as Lenin did, on the "commanding heights" of the economy, not the little guy. As Obama said, "the smallest" businesses will be exempt from fines for not "doing the right thing" in offering employer-based health care coverage. Health will not be nationalized in one fell swoop. Instead, a parallel system will be created, funded by surcharges on business payroll, which will be superior to many private plans.
