Garrett to push point to whalers

by tabsey  11-16-2008
Saw a bit on how the Aussies do it. No inconvenience to the whales and the scientists get all they need. Use a weapon which fires a small container into the whale, pulls out easily with a bit of whale inside. At least it is a more positive attitude than just shooting the Japanese.

Deaf Jam
dulios
by dulios  11-16-2008    2
Determined to bring the deaf and hard-of hearing community into the music world, D-PAN has further partnered with the University of Michigan's College of Engineering. The university is championing ways to apply new wireless technology that will aid the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in a live concert setting, and augment their capacity to "feel" the music. Forbes has his eyes on the hearing-centric music festivals. "I would love to see myself and other deaf artists going out performing on stage. Like at Lollapalooza. I think people would think it's cool to see deaf artists signing."

Rock star game designers
emeraldsong
by emeraldsong  11-13-2008
This guy wants to hire "rock star" developers. In my time in the industry I've observed people with the "rock star" attitude do well with convincing companies to part with their money, yet probably more-able, more-talented studios either grow in a slower way, or struggle and fail. In some ways this narks me off. Yet on the other hand, if the people have the skill of "rock star'ing it up" then they have done well for themselves, if it works for them.

Needed: A Black Elton John
debbyski
by debbyski  11-12-2008    3
"When I came out, I had an extraordinary set of parents who didn't give a crap and loved me, and I was never told I was going to hell," said Spearman, who grew up in the Washington, D.C., area, and came out at 17. "They had a sense of God that was larger than a chapter in Leviticus." "It would help if somebody major came out, but it would have to be somebody that sort of goes against all stereotypes," Spearman said. "There'd have to be some shock and awe, and then people would have to get used to it."

The Genius of Photography vs. Susan Sontag's On Photography
zizzy
by zizzy  11-10-2008    3
 |quote]Sontag argues that the proliferation of photographic practice has long begun to establish within people a "chronic voyeuristic relation" to the world around them. And that therefore the meaning of all events is somewhat leveled to an unhealthy degree. As she argues, this fosters an attitude of anti-intervention. Within this it's felt that the photographer should leave their subject, whether it be a person or an event, to its own devices while being photographed, regardless of the moral character of the subject. The justification comes in the idea that the resulting photographs will be documents, representations of events already in motion, in the name of truth and enlightenment. Sontag goes even further to say that the individual who seeks to photographically record cannot intervene, and that the person who intervenes cannot then faithfully record, for the two aims contradict each other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Photography Just something I'm pondering.

Un-Fucking-Believable! They fight tooth and nail to deny equal rights to the Gay Americans in California, and then call for civility? Really? You want civility from them, after spending mass amounts of money to destroy their lives? Where was your civility then? Oh, now that you won, you think you can call for civility? FUCK YOU! , I'm dismayed that I EVER thought that you bigoted ASS WIPES ever had a moral ideology. And I'm even happier for no longer calling my self a Moron Mormon. You can take your sanctimonious better-than-thou attitude and shove it up your ASS!

Congratulates and calls for "change" toward policy of "non-interference" from one of hostile aggression threatening war with Iran and forbidding nuclear energy development. By "selfish minority" he appears to reference the neoconservatives and Israeli Lobby that have controlled war policy contrary (Iraq, et al) to what most Americans believe is right.

The Possibilities in Hypnosis, Where the Patient Has the Power
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  11-4-2008
Like many others whose knowledge of hypnotism comes from movies and stage shows, my husband and Mrs. Kanter misunderstood what hypnosis is all about. While in a hypnotic trance, you are neither unconscious nor asleep, but rather in a deeply relaxed state that renders the mind highly focused and ready to accept suggestions to help you accomplish your goals. Hypnosis has been mired in controversy for two centuries, and its benefits are often overstated. It does not help everyone who wants to quit smoking, for example; then again, neither do other kinds of treatments. And the patient’s attitude is critical. In the words of Brian Alman, a psychologist who practices hypnosis in San Diego, “The power of hypnosis actually resides in the patient and not in the doctor.” Roberta Temes, a clinical hypnotist in Scotch Plains, N.J., insists that hypnosis cannot make people do anything they don’t want to do. Hypnosis can succeed only in helping people make changes they desire, she said in a

Republican Rule Is Dangerous
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-3-2008    1
Altemeyer believes about 25 percent of the adult population in the United States is solidly authoritarian (with that group mostly composed of followers, and a small percentage of potential leaders). It is in these ranks of some 70 million that we find the core of the McCain/Palin supporters. They are people who are, in Altemeyer's words, are "so self-righteous, so ill-informed, and so dogmatic that nothing you can say or do will change their minds." In my book Conservatives Without Conscience, I set forth the traits of authoritarian leaders and followers, which have been distilled from a half-century of empirical research, during which thousands of people have voluntarily been interviewed by social scientists. The touch points in these somewhat-overlapping lists of character traits provide a clear picture of the characters of both John McCain and Sarah Palin. Altemeyer is a social scientist based in Canada (see the list at the site)

Jobcreating Business Leaders Chose McCain Over Obama
merrie
by merrie  11-1-2008    2
CEOs support renewables but not a renewables-only policy. They support going after more fossil fuels by a 6 to 1 ratio for now. For example, Michael J. Leib, president of Hazleton Casting Co., summed up the general attitude of CEOs. "I am a strong proponent of a comprehensive energy policy, which includes drilling in all U.S. territories as well as harvesting oil from U.S. shale deposits he said. The backbone of our industrial economy is cost effective energy resources." They are in favor of international trade as evidenced by the 70.3 percent that would like to see trade restrictions loosened. Obama is viewed as particularly inexperienced when it comes to trade policy and understanding the links between free trade and growth, something President Bill Clinton knew well. McCain gets a solid B+ his highest grade on defense, and a B on foreign policy. Obama gets an almost failing D+ for each a grade that would not keep one in any school or employed very long at any business.

"How Grimoires Work"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  10-28-2008
continues Indeed, they seem so ridiculous that they encourage scorn concerning the whole subject. Is this ridicule valid? i don't think it is.: Perhaps we should look beyond the words and instructions, and see what is really going on in such instruction. And the first point to be raised is the 'leap of faith'. This is an absolute knowing that a belief system is true. It ignores reason, and takes the believer to a oneness with whatever system is being believed in. And often, to ignore the rationality that says it is wrong requires you to accept what to others would be gibberish. Hence, the ridiculousness of it all has rationality. : And this attitude continues into the spells themselves. For in order to carry out such irrational instructions, your beliefs have to be strengthened with every utterance or action. Hence, the very 'stupidity' of it all enhances your confidence that a result can be achieved. Spells are also related to normal life. Most people, when they get up in a mornin

I Have Learned
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-25-2008    17
I HAVE LEARNED that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel. I HAVE LEARNED that it's hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people's feelings and standing up for what you believe. I HAVE LEARNED that money is a lousy way of keeping score. I HAVE LEARNED that sometimes when my friends fight, I'm forced to choose sides even when I don't want to. I HAVE LEARNED that if you want to cheer yourself up, you should try cheering someone else up. I HAVE LEARNED that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. I HAVE LEARNED, reading what people write on desks (or clips) can teach you a lot. I picked some, that were relevant to me. There are many more at the source. Oh, and last but not least; I HAVE LEARNED never try to baptize a cat. And I have photo evidence to prove it.. .:)
