Haaretz editor: Israel facing existential crisis
jklugman
by jklugman  7-24-2008
The outgoing editor of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz spoke at the London Jewish Book Week. On the 2005 Chris McGreal series that appeared in the Guardian, comparing Israel to South Africa: Landau was "outraged" by the articles at the time, but went on: "I don't feel like that any more. I don't feel that my outrage did sufficient justice to that piece of journalism because I feel that we in Israel have got ourselves into a situation in which we will indeed be facing a South African dilemma. "We will have a country in which we will become the minority and the majority will be denied their political and civil rights. When I re-read the Chris McGreal reports I no longer feel necessarily that that was totally tendentious. It might have been a prophetic piece of journalism. But the point is that the outrage which I gave voice to was an inadequate reaction. The reaction should have been: 'has he got a point?'"

McCain: “Oil executives” tell me my energy plan is awesome
sparrow
by sparrow  7-22-2008
the full text of the last position is: The latest: During today’s town hall meeting in New Hampshire, McCain says “oil executives” told him we “could see results” from offshore drilling “within a couple of years.” McCain was in New Hampshire this afternoon where he unveiled the latest excuse for coastal drilling. Oil executives tell McCain that “within a couple of years we could be seeing results from it.” There’s no doubt that oil companies will profit handsomely from McCain’s coastal drilling plan. It’s helpful that McCain would relay that to an audience of voters.

Barack Obama Will Do The Unthinkable In London This Week
merrie
by merrie  7-22-2008    2
With the world as his stage, Obama, 46, hopes to persuade Americans that he is ready to become commander-in-chief. His minders are determined there will be no pictures of him in a flak-jacket or tank looking wimpish — the cause of Michael Dukakis’s downfall in the 1988 White House race. A poll in The Washington Post last week showed that 72% of Americans thought McCain, a Vietnam war hero, would make a good commander-in-chief; only 48% felt the same way about Obama. Yet the global coming of the Obamessiah is manna for critics who claim the Illinois senator has embarked on a humourless cult of personality. Exhibit A last week was his po-faced reaction to a satirical cartoon on the cover of The New Yorker showing Obama as a turban-wearing Muslim and his wife Michelle with a black-power Afro, wearing military fatigues. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article4363044.ece

Political Theater al-Maliki Style
merrie
by merrie  7-21-2008
As the security situation has improved, Iraqis increasingly are calling for the drawdown of American troops, and it probably will be a top issue in the provincial elections. Maliki has tried to balance voters’ preference for the departure of foreign forces with the Bush administration’s opposition to a timeline. In an interview with Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine this week, Maliki seemed to endorse Obama’s troop-withdrawal proposal, drawing the ire of the White House. The prime minister's office later backed away from the interview. But Monday’s statement by Maliki’s spokesman suggested that he's speaking with an audience different from the White House in mind: Iraqi voters.

The British upper 1% parrot the US upper 1%. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside (sic). However, Brown did state that Israel needs to back off in regards to the Palestinian state. Of course the Israelis didn't take kindly to this, sticking to their own version of manifest destiny.

I know I can always turn to DemoGirl when it comes to finding cool and useful online tools. Here's a great screencast of super easy blogging platform Posterous . Similar to Tumblr , but even easier to use, I can definitely see a growing audience for this and perhaps other no-brainer blogging platforms. Thanks for the tip, Molly!
