World-record Supercomputer Mimics Human Sight Brain Mechanisms
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-15-2008    2
Based on the results of PetaVision's inaugural trials, Los Alamos researchers believe they can study in real time the entire human visual cortex--arguably a human being's most important sensory apparatus. The ability to achieve human levels of cognitive performance on a digital computer could lead to important insights and revolutionary technological applications. Such applications include "smart" cameras that can recognize danger or an autopilot system for automobiles that could take over for incapacitated drivers in complex situations such as navigating dense urban traffic.

Fat people next on the list........
Antara
by Antara  5-1-2008    1
Moonbattery.com: Environmentalists frequently scream that there are too many people on the planet, implying some will have to go. We already knows who goes last (environmentalists), but who goes first? LiveScience has the answer: overweight Americans. n the United States, obesity is at an all-time high; two-thirds of adults in the Land of Plenty are overweight or obese. Obesity is perhaps the ultimate symbol of resource consumption; it's visible proof that overweight people already has more than they need — and take more anyway. Overweight people create more air pollution than thin people do. It's simple physics: Extra pounds translate into extra fuel in automobiles and airplanes. Extra fuel means increased energy usage, oil drilling, and air pollution. (Plus you can get more soap and lampshades out of overweight people.)

only 1,500 2009 Nissan GT-Rs are even coming to the US, it should be no surprise that dealers are adding huge markups to the already-stiff price of this car. How stiff? Pods or clods?
willhelm
by willhelm  4-21-2008    2
Another area in which liberals give every indication that they’re from another galaxy is the second amendment. For well over 30 years, Sen. Ted Kennedy, to name one of our more prominent left-wingers, has made it his mission to disarm law-abiding Americans. He would contend that he wants all guns confiscated, but any sensible person knows that the criminal class will always have access to contraband, be it drugs or weapons. But, wouldn’t you think, considering his own personal history, that Kennedy would devote his time and energy to doing away with automobiles and bodies of water? Republicans wonder why I support John McCain and, in spite of his faults, will vote for him in November. It’s because even if he’s not as conservative as I’d wish, I am convinced he’s an earthling and not a pod. When it comes to presidential elections, I am a realist, not an idealist. From my vantage point, it comes down to settling for half a loaf rather than ending up with a couple of crumbs.

Police Car Auctions
anakin_123
by anakin_123  4-19-2008
There are typically two different types of vehicles up for auction here. First is the seized vehicle. These could be any automobiles either owned by or involved with someone who is participating in illegal activities. The second type of vehicle is that of the decommissioned vehicle. A good example of this would be that of a police car that had been used for five years and was replaced...the government would then auction the police car off. After attending a police or government auction, you'll realize that the decommissioned vehicles often sell for much less

Mandates for Change
Rustee
by Rustee  3-1-2008    2
New homes, automobiles, and appliances will have to meet design standards set by government. Specific technologies, such as compact fluorescent bulbs, will be required. These regulations will tend to raise prices to consumers. Politicians will want to avoid blame for this, so they will look for ways to force companies to subsidize low- and middle-income consumers. Thus, during the next administration's second term we can expect to see price control mechanisms enacted for many energy-related products and services. Many Americans will welcome the regulatory state. Many others will accommodate it. Only a minority of us will oppose it. Somewhere down the road, as people see the indignity of the many intrusions and the adversity of the consequences, I hope that there will be a backlash. Otherwise, if the era of mandates emerges as I fear it will, then the engine of capitalism in America may run out of the fuel of competition.
