Buckley leaves National Review after Obama endorsement
keeth
by keeth  10-15-2008
"Sadly, I think Christopher Buckley is merely the latest example of the 'conservative' avant-garde who has succumbed to a common temptation: Becoming more liberal is tantamount to becoming more open-minded. There is a palpable elitism among some of the conservative panjandrum," Lewis said. So does this make Lewis an anti-elitist elitist? elitist (n): One who despises people or things regarded as inferior, especially because of social or intellectual pretension

"Large Fella" Bikes Back to Life
mugofcoffee
by mugofcoffee  10-9-2008    4
50 pounds in the first four months – and they kept on coming off. He'll be quick to point out that he wasn't “dieting”; he was changing his life. Permanently. He and his family left the east coast for Minneapolis, largely for its reputation as a cycling haven. Thus far Cutshall has dropped to about 230 pounds; he estimates that he'll plateau around 180 but says, “"It's not about a goal weight," he said. "I'm just doing what's healthy for my body, and the results will follow."

The Daily Show vs. Blovation Fest 2008!
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  8-19-2008    2
I've been watching the Daily Show since its first episode, and I started taking it serriously when Jon upped the IQ quotient by replacing Craig Killborne. Now the show pretty much only does indie film makers, political wonks, and third world presidents. How cool is that? The only people who do more serious interviews are Charlie Rose and Bill Moyers, and actually, Bill Moyers described Jon as "The Mark Twain of our time." But why did I clip? for the "Blovation Fest" Quote, which by the way, will be the festival of avant garde noise-punk music I attempt to put on this fall. ;)

The Family: The Hidden Christian Fundamentalist Power in the U.S.
zizzy
by zizzy  5-24-2008    6
A journalist's penetrating look at the untold story of christian fundamentalism's most elite organization, a self-described invisible network dedicated to a religion of power for the powerful They are the Family—fundamentalism's avant-garde, waging spiritual war in the halls of American power and around the globe. They consider themselves the new chosen—congressmen, generals, and foreign dictators who meet in confidential cells, to pray and plan for a "leadership led by God," to be won not by force but through "quiet diplomacy." Their base is a leafy estate overlooking the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia, and Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have reported from inside its walls.

Anaïs Nin
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-5-2008    2
From being a cult figure of the early feminist movement, Anais later rose to international prominence with her writing. She is best known for her diaries but also produced a number of novels and a prose poem in surrealistic style as well as wonderful erotic short stories, published posthumously. Characterized by the use of powerful and, at times, disquieting imagery, her work reveals great sensitivity and perception. In 1973 she received an honorary doctorate from Philadelphia College of Art. She was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1974.<<

New Insights into Artists perceptions due to physical infirmity
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  12-5-2007    1
Monet was not alone. France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries embraced an astonishing number of important artists who battled serious physical shortcomings — sometimes for decades. Edgar Degas, known for his paintings of nudes and ballet dancers, suffered retinal disease, probably macular degeneration, for nearly half his life. When he died in 1917, his colleague Pierre Auguste Renoir said, “It is fortunate for him ... any conceivable death is better than living the way he was.”

-< "Whether from ignorance of Islam or out of fear of our religion’s self-appointed spokesmen, whose number is legion, more and more seemingly sensible and rational urbanites are falling prey to extraordinary appearance changes. Sitting across from me as I write this in an office is a woman with her head draped in a dupatta. If that were all, nobody would give her a second glance. But she has a strip of cloth tied across her mouth and nose. The cloth would look like a bandage over a wound on her face if it weren’t so brightly printed. No doubt these clothing alterations and affectations shout out the wearer’s identity from a mile away: ‘I am an extremist Muslim.’ It is mainly the sadhus of India (who are largely unclothed), and Catholic monks and nuns uniformed in all-enveloping habits who make fashion statements about their religion.

ital / eng La Nuova Lorita sas c.f/p.iva 00166460436 La Nuova Lorita, founded in 1975 spent its early years developing its technique as a producer for ESPRIT. After years of successful growth, the Company decided to launch its own label in 1995. The young label “TP” distinguished itself immediately in its niche market despite intense competition in the international footwear industry thanks to its parent company’s skill, market experience and creativity. TP flourished in its early years, developing its identity as an avant-garde and sophisticate casual style among high-fashion circles. In 2003, La Nuova Lorita expanded its horizons yet again with the creation of the label “La soffitta di Gilda,” translated Gilda’s attic. This label catered towards changing fashion trends of the time, introducing to the high-end footwear sector a needed and highly sought-after femininity and a rebirth of vintage concepts from the past. The collections continue season after season to successfully de
