Obama has appointed two leading apologists for jobs offshoring as his economic advisors -- Bill Clinton’s Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin and Rubin associate Jason Furman. These two are notorious for their justifications of policies that benefit Wall Street, CEOs, and large retailers at the expense of the economic well-being and careers of millions of Americans. As a result of offshoring, good jobs in America are disappearing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics job figures make it totally clear that the US economy has ceased creating net new middle class jobs in the private economy in the 21st century.

POPSUri Avnery: 1948 At the time, the Jews constituted only a third of the population. The hundreds of Arab villages throughout the country dominated the main arteries that were crucial to our survival. We suffered heavy casualties in our efforts to open them, especially the road to Jerusalem. We honestly felt that we were "the few against the many". Our side was preparing for the massive attack of the Arab armies and we could not possibly leave a large hostile population at our rear. This military necessity was, of course, intertwined with the more or less conscious desire to create a homogeneous Jewish territory. ccording to the UN resolution, the "Jewish state" was to include more than half of Palestine (as it existed in 1947 under the British Mandate). In this territory, more than 40% of the population was Arab. In the second half of the war, after the advance of the Arab armies was halted, a deliberate policy of expelling the Arabs became a war aim on its own.

An army officer is a technician, trained to fulfill a particular job. That job is irrelevant to the struggle against a liberation movement A general does not understand the essence of a national insurgency, and therefore does not come to grips with its rules. For example, a general measures his success by the number of enemies killed. But the fighting underground organization becomes stronger the more dead fighters it can present to the public, which identifies with the martyrs. A general learns to prepare for battle and win it, but his opponents, the guerrilla fighters, avoid battle altogether. When the occupiers impose collective punishment on the population, they just reinforce their hatred and their mutual assistance. When they succeed in capturing or killing the leaders of the liberation struggle, other leaders take their place SO WHAT can we do ? reach a political settlement that both sides can live with and profit from. And get out.

Er wollte wirklich einen Frieden mit den Palästinensern erreichen. Aber er sah keinen Weg zu diesem Ziel, und er hatte kein klares Bild von diesem Ziel. Die Wende war zu schroff. Wie die israelische Gesellschaft im allgemeinen war er nicht in der Lage, sich selbst vom einen zum andern Tag von den Ängsten, dem Misstrauen, dem Aberglauben und den Vorurteilen zu befreien, die sich im Laufe von 120 Jahren des Konfliktes angesammelt hatten. Deshalb vollbrachte er das eine Manöver nicht, das das Oslo-Schiff sicher im Hafen hätte landen lassen: den Schwung der Ereignisse auszunützen und Frieden mit einer kühnen und schnellen Maßnahme zu erlangen. Er kannte das berühmte Wort von David Lloyd-George nicht, das dieser äußerte, als es um den Frieden mit Irland ging: „Man kann einen Abgrund nicht mit zwei Sprüngen überqueren.“

That was the justification that served as a bridge over the moral abyss. Ze'ev Jabotinsky wrote as early as 80 years ago that it was impossible to deceive the Palestinian people (whose existence he recognized) Therefore we need an "Iron Wall" to protect the Zionist enterprise. When Jabotinsky was told that his approach was immoral, he replied that the Jews were trying to save themselves from the disaster threatening them in Europe, and, therefore, their morality trumped the morality of the Arabs in Palestine. Most Zionists were not prepared to accept this force-oriented approach. They searched fervently for a moral justification they could live with. Thus started the long quest for justifications .

Sein Hauptpunkt: Israel wird mit der Bombardierung einer iranischen Nuklearanlage beginnen, der Iran wird mit dem Abschuss von Raketen auf Israel reagieren – und dies wird als Vorwand für einen amerikanischen Angriff auf den Iran dienen. Da gab es die Grenzen des göttlichen Versprechens: vom Nil bis zum Euphrat. Es gab die Grenzen des „Königreiches David“ , das bis nach Hamat im nördlichen Syrien reichte. Und es gab während der Zeit von Esra und Nehemia Grenzen der winzigen Enklave rund um Jerusalem. Während der römischen Zeit hatte Palästina Grenzen, die sich ständig veränderten. Und es gab Grenzen des „Jund Filastin“ der muslimischen Eroberer. Wie alle vorausgegangenen Grenzen waren auch die des britischen Mandats zufällig. Es war diese zufällige Karte, die von Jabotinsky heilig gesprochen worden war, der das folgende berühmte Lied schrieb: „Der Jordan hat zwei Ufer/ das eine gehört uns/ und das andere auch.“ Im Bewusstsein der israelischen Rechte hat eine neue Karte Gestalt angenommen. The Fatah people in the West Bank, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, condemn Hamas as a gang of fanatics, who are imitating Iran. The Hamas people accuse Abbas of being a Palestinian Marshal Petain, who has made a deal with the occupier. The propaganda of both sides is full of venom, and the mutual violence is reaching new heights. It looks like a cul-de-sac. Why is the Turkish government offering urgent mediation between Israel and Syria? All very mysterious. It seems that the key to this mystery is not to be found in Jerusalem or Damascus, but in Washington. When Ehud Olmert refuses to respond to the serenades of Bashar al-Assad, he hints that President Bush is forbidding any contact with the Syrians. Last year, America pushed Israel into the war in Lebanon, obstructed an early cease-fire and, so it seemed, was interested in extending the war into Syria. POPSUri Avnery - Frieden in Israel und Palästina -: 14 Jahre nach Oslo I Oslo hätte eine historische Wende sein sollen. Es hätte dem israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikt ein Ende setzen sollen, der ein Zusammenprall einer nicht aufzuhaltenden Kraft (Zionismus) und einer nicht beweglichen Masse (die Palästinenser) darstellt. Diese historische Wende geschah nicht. Der zionistische Angriff geht weiter, und der palästinensische Widerstand wird extremer. Zu Rabins Zeiten wurden die Siedlungen zwar mit hektischer Geschwindigkeit weiter gebaut, und es gab keinen ernsthaften Versuch, mit seriösen Verhandlungen zu beginnen. Aber die Beziehungen zwischen Rabin und Arafat wurden enger, gegenseitiges Vertrauen wuchs, und der Prozess hätte sich beschleunigen können. POPSUni Avnery's Column: Saving President Abbas They hear the words of President Bush, of Olmert and of the whole babbling choir of Israeli politicians and pundits. And they draw the inescapable conclusion: the Americans and the Israelis are working hard to turn Abbas into an agent of the occupation and the Fatah movement into a militia of the occupier. Sharon had a master plan with three main elements: (a) turning the Gaza Strip into a separate and isolated entity, led by Hamas, (b) turning the West Bank into an archipelago of isolated cantons led by Fatah, and (c) leaving both territories under the domination of the Israeli military. If the aim had been to achieve a peace settlement, all this would have happened. But since the complete opposite was done, it can be assumed that Sharon wanted things to work out roughly as they did: the collapse of the Authority in Gaza, the take-over of the Strip by Hamas, the split between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
