POPSWV charlatan to be examined by US Supreme Court Don Blankenship, CEO of WV's Massey Energy Co., which has a criminal record of over 5,000 counts, has been fined for employee deaths and waterway pollution, DB was seen in Monte Carlo with a WV Supreme Ct judge while appealing a $50 million judgment to the court (judge later recused himself), has another judge on the court who got $3 million from DB to get elected, who refused to recuse himself from the appeal, and the $50 M fine was shot down 3-2. Ah, but now the US Supreme Court has decided it will look over an appeal to the case challenging the judge's presence. Do you suppose justice might prevail in WV? DB has spent over $6 million to elect Republicans in WV.

POPSA Win For the Good Guys The SPLC was victorious in their civil trial against the IKA. Good news in light of all the negativity with the economy, racial threats after the election and the stripping of rights in California. Where there are people of conscience there is hope.

POPSJury Awards $2.5 million to Teen Beaten by KKK An all-white jury of seven men and seven women deliberated for five hours after three days of testimony. The suit alleged that Edwards, Hensley, and the Imperial Klans of America as a whole incited its members to use violence against minorities. "The people of Meade County, Kentucky, have spoken loudly and clearly. And what they've said is that ethnic violence has no place in our society, that those who promote hate and violence will be held accountable and made to pay a steep price," said Southern Poverty Law Center founder Morris Dees.

POPSThe Promise and Power of RNA RNA interference, or RNAi, discovered only about 10 years ago, is attracting huge interest for its seeming ability to knock out disease-causing genes. There are already at least six RNAi drugs being tested in people, for illnesses including cancer and an eye disease. And while there are still huge challenges to surmount, that number could easily double in the coming year. “I’ve never found a gene that couldn’t be down-regulated by RNAi,” said Tod Woolf, president of RXi Pharmaceuticals, one of the many companies that have sprung up in the last few years to pursue RNA-based medicines. The two scientists credited with discovering the basic mechanism of RNA interference won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2006, only eight years after publishing their seminal paper. And three scientists credited with discovering the closely related micro-RNA in the 1990s won Lasker Awards for medical research this year.

POPSExcellence Unrecognized if a Utility
I'm an Electric Engineer for SDG&E and work in operations. Operations includes hundreds of employees--linemen, dispatchers, engineers, relay techs, and more--who maintain the electric distribution infrastructure, respond to daily outage situations, & work 24/7 should a major event occur (like the 2007 firestorm). I do my job well. I do it with pride and strive for excellence. The people that work with me are dedicated and skilled - we are a great team. We have each sacrificed evenings with family and weekend plans because we understand that operations in 24/7. When I read this story I know we (SDG&E) deserve the two awards. But, will the public hear about this? There's been NO coverage of it. Instead, there's the SD Union Tribune and their one-sided articles about SDG&E & avaricious lawyers seeking gain from acts of nature. I guess it's just part of working for a utility - the CA public has no appreciation for 24/7 reliable electricity. What's an engineer to do, but her best!
