POPSWho Lends to the US? mint.com gives an interesting graphic demonstration of how much the US owes, and to whom. I was interested to find Brazil on the list, right after OPEC. Speaking of OPEC, read the part about two "Axis of Evil" nations being on the list of lenders to the US. Scary.

POPSKiarostami - the godfather of Iranian cinema Looking at Tazieh clearly invites westerners to step into Iranians' shoes. "Of course, I feel pain when I see that my country is considered evil," he says. "So in all my films, my wish is to give a kinder and a warmer image of human beings and of my country. Every morning, when I wake up, I have to say hello to my neighbours. And this is what I like to show in my films: friendship, love between people".

POPSYet Another Reason for Alternative Energy It amazes me when Bush talks about how committed he is to national security - with middle east countries being the biggest targets - but does nothing to reduce our reliance on oil. Bush continues to rely on countries he considers part of his "axis of evil" when he does nothing to further research into alternative domestic energy sources. His answer - let's try to drill for more oil here while maintaining a military presence in the middle east that's costing this country billions and ultimately trillions of dollars. No dumb ass, if you invested even a tiny portion of what you've spent on "securing" Iraq, on a domestic alternative energy policy, we wouldn't be in the economic trouble we're in today.

POPSBush says he will lift sanctions against N. Korea Of all the places, NK? Really? Well, there goes the axis of weevils. And further proof that Iraq was not about the "threat". I mean, wacky dictator, check, nukes, check, million man army, check, wants to unify his country by force and has built his power base around a cult like following deifying his father, check and check! Not fighting the "hard" wars? Priceless! For everything else Imperial there is Busch and Co.

POPSThe Axis of Evil: An Idiot's Guide: David Frum Joseph Cirincione, the man most widely identified as Obama's top nuclear-affairs adviser, last September pooh-poohed as "far-right" "nonsense" the early rumors that the Syrian nuclear facility was indeed a nuclear facility. Cirincione wrote on the Foreign Policy blog: "This appears to be the work of a small group of officials leaking cherry-picked, unvetted 'intelligence' to key reporters in order to promote a pre-existing political agenda. If this sounds like the run-up to the war in Iraq, it should. This time it appears aimed at derailing the U.S.-North Korean agreement that administration hardliners think is appeasement. Some Israelis want to thwart any dialogue between the U.S. and Syria." Cirincione seems to have been so determined to avert what he regarded as the threat of U.S. over-reaction--so eager to promote dialogue with Syria--that he blinded himself to the reality of a nuclear threat.

POPSMcCain Presidency: Neocons on Steroids "McCain would make Bush look like Ghandi", is what some are saying, and here is why: Take a look at what insiders say about McCain's foreign policy. Then look at his list of neoconservative advisers, particularly William Kristol (who led the Project for New American Century and their blueprint for a "new middle east") and former CIA director James Woolsey, whom former Colin Powell chief of Staff Wilkerson calls "scary". Note his plan for a "League of Democracies" (this is the global plan for PAX AMERICANA, per Clarence K. Streit in 1942) to "bypass the balky United Nations" for a more unilateral approach to gaining international support for war. McCain, though despised by many conservatives, is a dangerous neocon weapon of mass destruction who indeed will make Bush look like Ghandi.

POPS The Presidential Primary Goes To Damascus But what can the US have in common with Syria, a key component of the axis of evil and the operational ally of Iran? As the NYS asks: Where is the sense of reality about who President Assad is and what his regime is all about? To suggest, as the Syrians report Mr. Brzezinski said, that they share some kind of common interest in respect of ‘stability’ is disingenuous…Where do they stand in respect of Syria — and why can't they bring themselves to explain what their advisers are doing in the capital of one of the countries most hostile to America and Israel? POPSWho Hijacked The Primaries And What We MUST Do! This is our party, not John McCain’s or Mel Martinez's, or Lindsay Graham’s. The Republican Party is THE conservative party dammit. Let’s admit it and take it back. RINOS and Liberals have taken the GOP plane hostage, and its time for us passengers to revolt…and do what has to be done -- "Let’s Roll" Sadly these 4 states have done more than set the tone for the other 46 -- they’ve dictated terms. Frankly I could extend the analogy to include Nevada, which is down to about 13% native -- but why beat a dead horse. What we have is the sick and twisted dreams of Pinch Sulzberger, Don Imus, Maureen Dowd, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews come true: the GOP has been forced to choose a nominee designed to cause the base to retch, and thereby not vote. Guaranteeing 4 years of Clinton score settling or Obama socializing entire corporate sectors

POPSCharles Searches For The Bomb In Iran An interesting read, which paints most of Iran as a normal type country that doesn't deserve having the crap bombed out of it. Worth a few minutes for an honest appraisal.

POPS"We're Not Dangerous...We're Persian!" While it's hard to beat the hilarity of his opening bit, Iranian comedian Jobrani's entire politically incorrect routine is online: 1 , 2 . Sometimes you just gotta laugh at the seriousness of the world.... (Via The Daily Dish.)

POPSSpiegel: George, the Worst, Goodbye. A footnote. "Gingrich, once crowned Time's "Man of the Year," cannot help but be pleased that Americans have welcomed the break with Bush with open arms. Gingrich, who has repeatedly and semi-publicly toyed with the idea of throwing his hat into the presidential race, recommends that his party base its new strategy on turning its back on Bush.

POPSWhy sanctions on Iran could work "If Iran is cut off by its major trade and investment partners, Tehran may just change course—because there is nothing the regime fears more than a counterrevolution by Iran's dissatisfied, economically disadvantaged youth."

POPSAxis of Evil: SOA School of the Americas/WHINSEC "SOA Watch is an independent organization that seeks to close the US Army School of the Americas, under whatever name it is called, through vigils and fasts, demonstrations and non-violent protest, as well as media and legislative work. The Pentagon has responded to the growing movement and Congress' near closure of the SOA with a PR campaign to give the SOA a new image. In an attempt to disassociate the school with its horrific past, the SOA was renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation in January of 2001."

POPSBolivian President appears on Daily Show I watched this and it was absolutely great. This president has proven himself successful in the face of ridiculous adversity. He didn't get some of the jokes, but the language barrier is particularly hard when it comes to idioms in Spanish and English. But he did get the last laugh in, with his asking that we don't consider him part of the axis of evil.

POPSWhat Happened on September 6, 2007? Another possibility is that Israel preemptively destroyed a planned nuclear site in Syria and did the world an enormous favor, much like what it did in 1981 when it attacked the Osirak nuclear site in Iraq.

POPSHans Blix on curbing nuclear weapons - the EU way He added that he was still hopeful that direct talks could defuse the crisis over Iran's nuclear programme. The theme of Dr Blix's address to the Forum was "Weapons of Mass Destruction - The EU's Role". His address was based on the final report of the independent Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission which makes recommendations to the global community on how to make the world safe from nuclear arms and from chemical and biological weapons – especially in the hands of terrorists.
