An open apology to boomers everywhere
spirithiker
by spirithiker  11-10-2008    4
“We heard the voice of a man who can inspire with his words, who's unashamed of his own intelligence, who's willing to treat the citizens of this country like smart, capable people, worthy of respect.” So unlike Bush and his neo-cons. “For the first time in some of our lifetimes, we believed.” 60’s idealism coming full circle. With a little less violence.

The Greying of Canada
gingembre
by gingembre  11-8-2008    1
Will there be a national strategy to cope with the massive numbers of aging Canadians or creation of a national home-care program for seniors? "The older we get, it seems, the longer we want to live – and, indeed, are living. Like almost every other developed country, Canada is greying, big-time, as the population bulge known as baby boomers closes in on senior status, with the first wave turning 65 in 2011. They will live longer than their forebears; not only has Canadian life expectancy doubled in the past century, to 82 for men and 85 for women, but many more of us will live to be 100." "I tell old people: you have to pay attention to what you like, what gives you pleasure. I love clothes. I love food. I still cut out recipes even though I can't cook any more. I love to read. If you love reading, you've got it for life. I'm grateful to my friends and my children. I know there are grand gardens around the city but I couldn't be happier with my little garden."

Are the baby boomers to blame for our current economic problems?
egoldstein
by egoldstein  11-3-2008    6
Some tough criticism of the baby boom generation. I hope that one positive side effect of the current economic difficulties is that our culture will be less focused on wealth and material goods.

McCain's Social Security Plan Would Cut Benefits To People Who Already Paid For Them
glennbah
by glennbah  9-28-2008
Under Clinton, the force feeding of SSA collections into government began to be referred to as the Social Security Surplus. Clinton used it to pay down other national debt, rightly assessing that in order for the debt to the Trust Fund to be repaid, we would need a solvent government. Paying down the extra-Social Security debt and balancing the budget seemed to assure that the government's indebtedness to the Greenspan plan could be serviced.

Now Who Will Bailout the Federal Government?
blueridge
by blueridge  9-25-2008
Contrary to Bush's speech this is what Americans should really be afraid of. Here is a sneak preview to a Forbes 9/28 article from Economics professor at Boston University. The real liability facing our government is $70 trillion. This represents the present value difference between all the government's projected future spending obligations and all its projected future tax receipts. This fiscal gap takes into account Uncle Sam's need to service official debt--outstanding U.S. government bonds. But it also recognizes all our government's unofficial debts, including its obligation to the soon-to-be-retired baby boomers to pay their Social Security and Medicare benefits. (The link in the clipmark goes to a pdf of his paper that will be published in Forbes)

The Great Depression Hoax
Rustee
by Rustee  8-30-2008
Are we a nation of whiners, as Phil Gramm put it a little while ago? No, the American public is not whining...More likely, though, Americans are just leaving the whining to pundits and trend reporters. Our problem is not whining. It is persuading young people that, with baby boomers retiring, entitlement programs bulging and the world economy growing ever more competitive, now's the time to roll up the sleeves for something other than tattoos. For example, India produces 2.5 million college graduates every year (with concentrations in high demand fields - electronics, programming, engineering, accounting, etc.), and approximately 90,000 MBA's. Nothing against tattoos, but I do feel ignorance and apathy are much too prominent in America. Awareness of ignorance is the first step to wisdom.

Corporations in Brain Drain - Will Boomers Help?
bookchick49
by bookchick49  8-23-2008    2
Quote excerpt: "Companies historically haven't been proactive in getting older workers to train younger workers to do their jobs. " It is my (humble) opinion that the work ethics of the younger workers have changed over the years. When I walk by a (younger) worker's desk and see them surfing the web or iPhoning, iTuning and iChatting on company time, it pisses me off. Whatever happened to asking a co-worker who is swamped, if they could use some help? It's called "Team Work" and I haven't seen much of it coming from the younger crowd. I also see more bully attitudes. Those of us that have been working our asses off over the years don't appreciate this attitude in the work place nor do we have time to deal with it because we're 'busy.' Hello? And what's this crap excuse "It's not my job," or "that isn't in my job description." I had one young gal working with me, in college, bright and intelligent and took initiative. Quick learner. However, everything she did
