POPSIAD, Internet Addiction Disorder "US academics have found that more than one in eight Americans showed at least one possible sign of problematic internet use, with some web surfers already starting to seek medical help." "The Chinese manual would be the first of its kind in the world, adding to the controversy over whether compulsive internet use should be officially viewed as a mental disorder." I think that eventually we will have to recognize it as an added capability of the human, the netting/wired sense or a sort. certainly not a disorder.

POPSJames Howard Kunstler's "World Made By Hand" [trailer] A novel about peak oil and what it could mean for America's future. While this novel depicts a pretty bad scenario (global war, the end of petroleum shipments to the US, the general collapse of the US), it's actually a quite hopeful book. POPSKenyans call for end to shady pastors "Giving is not bad because it is a mission of the Church, but we should not teach people to give all they have, causing disharmony in their homes," said Pastor Otieno.

POPSAnd so the bailout begins... If Mr. Kashkari, is only going to be in his post for three months, that's a pretty good indication that the administration plans to use all $700 billion right away.

POPS" I am Joe Six-Pack. I am not who they think that they are talking to. Are you?" More: Joe is the guy I worked with who served in Vietnam, worked construction, had four kids, thought Portland micro-brews were for hippies and weirdos -- and told me one day about having to change churches, because "our pastor spends all his time talking about how bad the gays are, and I go to church for God, and I really don't think God cares who you sleep with or who you marry." Oh, and he went back to school at 45 to get a degree in architecture, so I guess he won't be Joe Six-Pack soon. His income will put him into that Better Class of People y'all think you're part of. Joe is a writer or an actor or an artist who waits tables, pumps gas, shelves books, does landscaping, delivers pizza, scrubs toilets, and otherwise works his or her ass off all day or night to pay the mortgage so they can continue to write or act or make art.

POPSFBI Investigating Companies At Heart Of Meltdown Last week, the Federal Reserve provided an emergency $85 billion loan to AIG, which teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. Lehman Brothers was forced to file for bankruptcy after attempts to engineer a private rescue fell apart. All the companies were laid low from bad bets on complex mortgage-related securities. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made the joint decision last week that the only way to stop the carnage was to deal with the root cause of all the troubles, billions of dollars of bad mortgage debt sitting on the books of major financial companies. This debt has triggered the worst credit crisis in decades, causing credit markets to essentially freeze up despite the fact that the Fed joined with major central banks around the world to pump billions of dollars of reserves into the financial system. IndyMac Bancorp Inc. and the former Countrywide Financial Corp., are also under. scrutiny.

POPSGermany's Small Town Power Solution They actually sell their excess power at a premium to the grid. Without the laws Germany has on the books, America does not have these laws, it would not work. Now it works because people realize, there are jobs and money to be had, plus energy independence and environmental protection. Daenemark is one of the Scandinavian Countries where this also is wide spread. Too bad, America is so far behind in laws and environmental protection.

POPSRacial In-sensitivity or Over-sensitivity? This is an example of how overly-sensitive and conservative American society has become. It seems like people are always on the look-out for what could possibly be interpreted as a potential negative connotation against a particular race, color, religion, etc. Could you interpret this character's features as mocking black people - sure. But it's a cartoon character - they are often over-exaggerated to make them more engaging. The story of the cartoon means no disrespect, but because some racial leaders interpret it as offensive, it's being removed from stores. I think we go overboard more often than not in these types of situations. Is the cartoon saying black people are bad - no. Does the character exaggerate some physical characteristics black people tend to have - it looks like it. But why is that offensive?

POPSParents blame kids’ failing test scores on Wikipedia Another case of misuse of a wonderful resource and giving the resource a bad name! One comment at the site says this: "My university docks marks if you quote or reference Wikipedia. The nice thing about it is that it usually presents the “facts” in a general and easy to read manner, but provides references for more in depth study. Wikipedia should be an aid to study, but not used as a study resource exclusively. That’s what peer reviewed journals and books are for. In my high school days there was a similar problem with Encarta."

POPSThe Web's Greatest Links Page Part II (Weblogs) I am still getting used to make links work or not on the clipper so if there is any confusion it is on my part. I wanted to add the disclaimer on the end as I have not had the slightest bit of time to examine even a tenth of what I clipped. Some may bee dead links and some may be a lot better if they were dead links. Proceed with your own caution.

POPSFlooding Puts Cedar Rapids, Much Of Iowa Under Water The downtown library, with its 300,000 books, was shut down after workers relocated some of its collection from lower shelves to avoid the rising water. While Cedar Rapids was the worst hit, the entire state of Iowa was battered by bad weather and flooding. Gov. Chet Culver declared 83 of the state's 99 counties as disaster areas. In Des Moines, 100 miles to the southwest, officials issued a voluntary evacuation order for much of downtown and other areas bordering the Des Moines River. Mayor Frank Cownie said the evacuations in the state's capital were an attempt "to err on the side of citizens and residents." Despite the flooding and evacuations, Iowa authorities reported no fatalities or serious injuries linked to the weather woes.

POPSFulbright Scholars Trapped by Gaza Blockade Now is it sinking in how rotten and evil these people are. Israel is a confederation of some of the most twisted people on the entire planet. People who societal aim is pain upon others - trying to outdo each other in atrocities against humanity. Bad enough when a nation does not allow its people to go and come freely, but even more evil when another state seals the borders so that none inside escapes its demented program of cruelty. Evil! That's what this state is all about.

POPS10 Books That Screwed Up The World I agree with most of this list, the rest I have no opinion because I haven't read the books. My curiosity has been piqued enough to read them and found out. Read the article to learn beyond the summaries why these books (and by extension, their authors) are considered to be so harmful.

POPS10 Books That Screwed Up The World "From Machiavelli's The Prince to Karl Marx's The Communist Manifesto to Alfred Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, these "influential" books have led to war, genocide, totalitarian oppression, family breakdown, and disastrous social experiments. And yet these authors' bad ideas are still popular and pervasive--in fact, they might influence your own thinking without your realizing it. Here with the antidote is Professor Benjamin Wiker. In his scintillating new book, 10 Books That Screwed Up the World (And 5 Others That Didn't Help), he seizes each of these evil books by its malignant heart and exposes it to the light of day. "
