Like them, I’ve got some bad loans out there, and I’m suffering from “market turbulence.” My nephew is into me for two grand on a college loan, and he can’t seem to get a job that doesn’t require a hair-net. Meanwhile, my bartender at the Chug-a-Lug will testify that I’m behind on my bar tabs because of the “unusual and exigent circumstances” roiling financial markets. That’s the very line that American Express used to get its snout into the public trough, so why not me?

Immunity and impunity have gone hand in hand. Representative Jim McDermott. "The private contracting thing is the most erosive thing that this administration has done. You look at all the things that are being run by private contractors, you simply cannot be handing money to a private contractor who is not under the law of that country or the law of this country and can do anything they want. They're really -- they're rogue outfits." Blackwater and at least 300 other companies have been hired by the US government for privatized armed services in Iraq to the tune of about $6 billion in taxpayer money..

The Promise and Power of RNA
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-14-2008
RNA interference, or RNAi, discovered only about 10 years ago, is attracting huge interest for its seeming ability to knock out disease-causing genes. There are already at least six RNAi drugs being tested in people, for illnesses including cancer and an eye disease. And while there are still huge challenges to surmount, that number could easily double in the coming year. “I’ve never found a gene that couldn’t be down-regulated by RNAi,” said Tod Woolf, president of RXi Pharmaceuticals, one of the many companies that have sprung up in the last few years to pursue RNA-based medicines. The two scientists credited with discovering the basic mechanism of RNA interference won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2006, only eight years after publishing their seminal paper. And three scientists credited with discovering the closely related micro-RNA in the 1990s won Lasker Awards for medical research this year.

Instead of a Bailout How about a Buyout?
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  11-12-2008
Another example of why "GIVE ME'S" never work out. Take for example the current problems facing the big three auto companies. Union negotiated contracts are taking and ever increasing portion of company profits to maintain. Giving benefits to those who are no longer producing or contributing to the profit making potential of the company is leaching resources from the parent. A large portion of society taking from the public watering hole is depleting the supply faster than those who are contributing can replace it. In the end failure is inevitable. All this BAILOUT business is BAD BUSINESS, and will only delay the inevitable. Considering there are market solutions to market problems I would certainly support using those options instead of looking for another hand out. What say you?

Assist Business or Assist Business Now is running a scam. Their address in Phoenix is totally bogus as their offices are still located in Denver Colorado. There is noone occupying suite 202 on Thomas as the Assist Business website claims. Courtney Krenz and Andrew Eickenberg changed the name of the company (Access Capital Funding Group) and claim to be in Phoenix so they can avoid all the bad press and complaints.

Amylin Shares Crash
Matthew Herper
by Matthew Herper  11-4-2008
As if the company's diabetes drug Byetta, already dealing with controversies over the risk of pancreatitis, needed more bad news. This potential FDA delay, as reported in the link by TheStreet.com's Elizabeth Trotta, has nothing to do with pancreatitis but with a manufacturing issue related to the new, long-acting Byetta being developed by Amylin, Alkermes, and Eli Lilly. Apparently samples from Alkermes' facility don't match the commercial scale versions made in Amylin's facility. This seems like an execution mistake, and something the companies could have been on top of. No wonder investors aren't happy.

Crash in Process? Global Markets Tumbling!
blueridge
by blueridge  10-16-2008    1
What the Dow did Wed is rippling globally. All markets are falling! This will cause people to make immediate changes (as some 401ks allow) to their plans, shifting from stocks to bonds, which will further the collapse into an avalanche. It was reported by the MSM that this was based upon news that recession is certain and job layoffs are being announced now by major corporations. Further, I believe many corporations will decide that since the market has declined so bad, that they will not play games to show good earnings reports for the quarter, and instead blame the market for stock price falling, and post their undoctored poor performance, which will further erode stock prices. This could be huge. The Bailout Plan was a sham. Those who voted against it were right. The market is convulsing to adjust on its own as if there was none. This looks like a crash course of historic proportions (the declines already set records) before the end of October.

Bailout Is Not The Right Answer
merrie
by merrie  9-30-2008    8
This subprime lending was more than a minor relaxation of existing credit guidelines. This lending was a wholesale abandonment of reasonable lending practices in which borrowers with poor credit characteristics got mortgages they were ill-equipped to handle. Once housing prices declined and economic conditions worsened, defaults and delinquencies soared, leaving the industry holding large amounts of severely depreciated mortgage assets. The fact that government bears such a huge responsibility for the current mess means any response should eliminate the conditions that created this situation in the first place, not attempt to fix bad government with more government. The obvious alternative to a bailout is letting troubled financial institutions declare bankruptcy. Bankruptcy means that shareholders typically get wiped out and the creditors own the company. Bankruptcy does not mean the company disappears; it is just owned by someone new (as has occurred with several airline

The Bailout: Will The Center Hold?
merrie
by merrie  9-29-2008    2
The bill takes a hybrid approach, and in the case of assets bought at auction, the most severe penalties kick in only when Treasury has bought more than $300 million in assets. At that juncture, a 20 percent surtax would be imposed on rich severance packages, and in the case of highly paid executives, the company would lose its deduction for salaries above $500,000. The second compromise dealt with a Republican proposal that the government intervene in the markets, not by buying up bad assets but by providing a federally backed insurance program that might make the same mortgage-related securities more salable. House GOP leaders had warned Saturday evening that they would need to take any deal to their rank-and-file members before committing to back it. In a sign that negotiations were growing serious earlier in the evening, a Pelosi aide collected BlackBerrys from the staffers meeting in her office so that no details would leak out.

Bailout plan faces first test in House today
rmowery
by rmowery  9-29-2008
They will approve this - just like all other bad decisions that have been made in haste. This still gives Wall Street the better deal then the tax payers. Also if you read through the draft that they put out, CEO's are still able to make $$. All the limit that was placed was a $500K cap on what a company can write off in the salary. So a company can compensate in other ways and thus nothing has changed. Likewise any CEO's/Execs who have a plan currently in place are grandfathered in. At least that is how I interpreted what I read in the draft.
