POPSBrain surgery with a banjo In this case, the surgeons used the banjo to fine tune the treatment. Because of his tremors, Adcock no longer had the dexterity required for his characteristic fast picking style. He played the instrument during his operation so that the surgeons could pinpoint exactly where the electrodes would most effective.

POPSReligious Fantasy Contrary to what you might hear, the Ben Stein movie Expelled is not based on science. It is a propaganda film promoting the fake controversy over evolution. Admittedly, the majority of people in the US actually believe this nonsense. It seems that they are also willing to contribute to this BS so they can justify their creationist dogma. I'm beginning to hear the banjo track from "Deliverance" being hummed by the masses. Looks like the importation of scientists is going to be the new growth industry in the US soon.

POPSObama Losing the Hick Vote? (from the article) "Why it's almost as if you have one way of speaking among the progressive elite and another language entirely for the rubes you'd presume to govern. And which manner of speaking represents your real beliefs and expresses your real agenda? It's a mystery we'll never quite be able to puzzle out, I'm sure.

POPSToo Sensitive? This is an interesting topic. Are we losing our sense of humor? Is it only funny if the butt of a joke is not us? I live in the South. Am I offended by jokes of gap toothed, banjo playing hillbillies? Not really. Am I offended by someone trying to back up a fact by implying that all Southerners are of the primitive, rural type? Not really offended but it does show the lack of thought by the person using such stereotypes. But that's the point. The aforementioned is a joke. The latter makes the assumption of truth. I think the apology ritual has itself become a parody in our society. Personally, I'm glad I can laugh at myself. 'Course, that's just my take on things.

POPS'Bard of Armagh' Tommy Makem Dies in US. Clancy Bros fame
President Mary McAleese offered her condolences to Mr Makem's family. "In life, Tommy brought happiness and joy to hundreds of thousands of fans the world over," she said. "Always the consummate musician, he was also a superb ambassador for the country, and one of whom we will always be proud." Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Seamus Brennan said he had learned of Mr Makem's death "with great regret". "He was a multi-talented artist whose abilities went beyond music, with other skills as a storyteller, actor, songwriter and poet. I wish to pass on my condolences to Tommy's family, relatives and friends at this sad time and hope that they can take comfort from the fact that his music is a wonderful legacy that will live on for generations to come," he said. "Tommy was truly a music legend in his own lifetime. Now, with his passing, he has left behind a rich and enduring legacy of music, song and story to be enjoyed and appreciated by this generation and generations to co

POPSNew Creationist Museum to open "Meanwhile a remarkable fossil of a perch devouring a herring found in Wyoming offers “silent testimony to God’s worldwide judgment,” not because it shows a predator and prey, but because the two perished — somehow getting preserved in stone — during Noah’s flood." The fish... drowned?

POPS1946 Black Stereotypes on Film May Make a Come Back Although, in its day, "Song of the South" was a remarkable cinematic achievement, it did promote what was then considered to be harmless stereotyping of blacks in totally fictional scenarios. Disney is being hounded by fans of the film to re-release it on video and Disney is carefully considering the idea. I personally think it would be fine if Disney lives up to its statements that the film, if re-released, must be done in a manner that explains the context of the times and stresses the falseness of the images portrayed.

POPSPat Boone on evolution Nothing really new here, but it is interesting that WorldNutDaily is starting to pull in some intellectual heavyweights (relatively speaking).
