POPSFilms today, books tomorrow? by Mariam Mokhtar "But the scariest thing is how the Puteri Umno motion was passed without debate. An important call such as this should have warranted a little more scrutiny. If the Government were to accede to their request, then it is all Malaysians, who will suffer. Not just Muslims. Movies like the Harry Potter films will not be screened. Lord of the Rings, and even The Wizard of Oz will have to be banned. And what about science fiction films? Alien, Predator and others, may be full of horror, or lack unexplained traditional elements, and thus, will not fit in any religious teaching." In short - ban fucking everything. Would that make 'em happy?

POPSBanned Books Week During the last week of September every year, hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events. The 2009 celebration of Banned Books Week will be held from September 26 through October 3. The purpose of this Web site is to help the public join the celebration of our freedom to read. The easiest way is to visit a participating library or bookstore. There is a list of Events, to help you find one in your community. (If you want to post information about an event in your community, please click here.) There is also a list of suggestions of other activities that will help remind people of the importance of free speech, What You Can Do. If you want further information about BannedBooksWeek.org, contact us at info@abffe.com or bbw@ala.org.

POPSBanned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read Intellectual freedom can exist only where two essential conditions are met: first, that all individuals have the right to hold any belief on any subject and to convey their ideas in any form they deem appropriate; and second, that society makes an equal commitment to the right of unrestricted access to information and ideas regardless of the communication medium used, the content of the work, and the viewpoints of both the author and receiver of information. Freedom to express oneself through a chosen mode of communication, including the Internet, becomes virtually meaningless if access to that information is not protected. Intellectual freedom implies a circle, and that circle is broken if either freedom of expression or access to ideas is stifled.

POPSCensor the Book Oh, golly gee! Check out this website that is dedicated to banning or censoring books that are indecent, immoral, racist, and unfit for society. That is, according to their standards. There is a long list of organizations and people that help their efforts. My personal favorite is ‘Sara Palin – Governor of Georgia (2006)’. Yep, that’s right, these people are so blinded in their zeal to shield the public from the ways of reality and keep us all in the dark ages that they don’t even check their own facts. They would paint a rosy world view where nasty things like sex, slavery, bigotry, hate, racial slurs, and ignorance would never be uttered in public much less be written in a book. Some of the greatest literary works would never be read if they had their way. But, as that great thinker Anonymous says: “Great works of art should never be a disguise for the indecency and immoral behavior of mankind. Is that really necessary for the freedom of speech?” I’d say, Hell Yes!

POPShttp://www.flickr.com/photos/ezefun/sets/72157611691133261/ Today, not only is smoking banned on domestic and international flights, smoking is also banned inside most airports and many localities have passed smoking bans in most public places, including many bars and restaurants. In 1998 California enacted a complete smoking ban that included an initially controversial ban of smoking in bars. Subsequently, other states such as New York have implemented bans of their own. There are now 34 states with some form of smoking ban on the books. In 2003 New York City amended its antismoking law to include all restaurants and bars, including those in private clubs, making it one of the toughest in the nation. Not satisfied with strict indoor smoking bans, experiments with outdoor bans, especially in public or government-owned spaces, have begun. The state of California, known to be a leader in anti-smoking policy, has enacted certain outdoor smoking bans.

POPSA Book Banned I believe society does suffer from banning ideas and thoughts to a large degree. I know how it felt when one of my clips was pulled off for stating the obvious. Of course, we can't yell "Fire" in a crowded theatre, but I wonder how much of this is about control and trying to impose particular "values" on others.

POPSBanned Book - Bunny Suicides The book is f-ing hilarious in that glorious way black humor is. The fact that one parent thinks she can decide for a community what will be on its library shelf is maddening.

POPSBecause We Don't Need It... We don’t need more debts. Palin spent 15 million on a new sports center in the valley, leaving the small town of Wasilla, Alaska in debt to the amount of 22 million. (That’s 22 million more than the debt she took on when taking on this lovely playtime as mayor.) We don’t need family feuds interfering with duties. I know you feel your ex-brother-in-law was a dick… but trying to get him fired...Sarah? We don’t need another vote against gay marriage. This is just standard every day equal rights being overlooked. Sarah Palin disagrees. We don’t need to overlook global warming. Science can now tell us "Yup. That is happening.” Not my words, that is science speak. Sarah Palin disagrees.

POPSIntolerance on the Left
If book banning is such a life-and-death issue to these celebrity foot soldiers for free speech, where were they four years ago when John Kerry and his rabid minions were pressuring Regnery Publishing to withdraw Unfit for Command from bookstores? Where were they when members of the Borders Books Employee Union were openly advocating sabotaging book sales? A message on the union’s members-only website urged: You guys don’t actually HAVE to sell the thing! Just “carelessly” hide the boxes, “accidentally” drop them off pallets, “forget” to stock the ones you have, and then suggest a nice Al Franken or Michael Moore book as a substitute . . . I don’t care if these Neandertals (sic) in fancy suits get mad at me, they aren’t regular customers anyway. Other than “Left Behind” books, they don’t read. Anything you can do to make them feel unwelcome is only fair. They are the people pushing retailers to cut costs, don’t forget. And they would censor your speech, your books,

POPSFactcheck: the false rumors about Palin Dems and Repubs and Indies can agree that these allegations are neither true nor helpful. Further, McCain and campaign conflate the false charges of kooks with the serious questions about Palin's qualifications, and declare them all out of bounds. Not so fast ...

POPSFalse Internet Claims And Rumors Debunked: FactCheck.org
A few of these claims were included in a chain e-mail by a woman named Anne Kilkenny. We'll be looking into other charges in that e-mail for a future story. For more explanation of the bullet points above, please read the Analysis. CNN's Soledad O'Brien made the claim on Sept. 4 Palin slashed the special education budget: She tripled the funding per-pupil. One false rumor accuses then-Mayor Palin of threatening to fire Wasilla’s librarian for refusing to ban books from the town library. Some versions of the rumor come complete with a list of the books that Palin allegedly attempted to ban. The story is false on several fronts: Palin was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party – which calls for a vote on whether Alaska should secede from the union or remain a state – despite mistaken reports to the contrary. But her husband was a member for years, and she attended at least one party convention, as mayor of the town in which it was held.

POPSDemocrat Attacks on Palin Proven False Virtually every one of these lies was reported by a major news organization without being properly verified. Meanwhile, no mainstream news organization has assigned investigative resources to uncovering Hussein Obama's radical activities in Hawaii and Chicago. The American people have less than sixty days to find out the truth about the kind of man the liberal media is trying to sneak into the White House.

POPSPalin's Book Ban?? One clue noted that this list was fabricated was that the Harry Potter series hadn't even been published at that time.
