interesting two minute video on destroying these weapons
jimbo1000
by jimbo1000  11-13-2008    3
The headline is quite misleading. The biggest cluster bomb users aren't signing the treaty. The US has used them in every recent war: Yugoslavia in 1999, Afghanistan, and Iraq and has not renounced their continued use. Obama voted for an amendment that would have prevented the use of such weapons against civilians, but if these weapons are used in war, they inevitably will kill civilians. The only sure way to stop killing civilians with cluster bombs is to eliminate them. A Google search for "cluster bombs" on Obama's website came up empty; I didn't find any indication of what Obama intends to do about them. If Bill Clinton were back in office, you can bet he'd find a way to continue to use these God-forsaken devices, even as he convinced everyone of the opposite. We'll see if Obama is a president in the Clinton mold.

Logic?
lifecyce1898
by lifecyce1898  11-11-2008    2
Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools. A president lying about an extramarital affair is a impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery. Supporting "Executive Privilege" for every Republican ever born, who will be born or who might be born( in perpetuity.)

The Conservative Bastion
debbyski
by debbyski  11-9-2008    2
" Both women came from fundamentalist backgrounds and attended religious colleges. And both wrestled for years with the guilt they felt over being lesbians. "I thought, 'God, you played a really horrible trick on me -- making me think this was really disgusting and then making me gay,' " The couple, both 47, moved to Murrieta from Orange County looking for a place with good schools and space for children. They knew it was a conservative town but believed they could fit in. "We have always lived comfortably with our neighbors and have always been who we are," Lorian said. Now they wonder if their efforts to blend in hurt them. "

Yes, Kids Belong in Pubs
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-24-2008    1
After all, initiating your children into the ritual of popping to the pub for a drink and a packet of crisps is a lovely way to carry on the pub-going tradition. I totally disagree! Go to a café instead! There are many things in this world that are restricted to adults. Drinking, driving, sex, etc. Should we maybe let kids get behind the wheel of a car, because it's the perfect way to introduce them to road safety? Or drag them to strip joints to educate them in finer points of the human anatomy? I think not. Keep kids out of pubs and let us have our beer in peace! Is nothing sacred anymore? I'd like to suggest we also ban... Australians, because they can get pretty trolleyed and start calling everyone "mate". Now stop right there! Seeing that Aussies in pubs, are probably what has saved the world economy from TOTALLY collapsing, I suggest you drop your racism, Pom! .. . Clip Tube

Pullman on Religion
tabsey
by tabsey  9-30-2008    1
INTRO; Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy constitutes one of the finest reading experiences for children I’ve ever seen. I read them as an adult, on the advice of a literary colleague, and fell under their spell immediately. They are fantasy books, for sure, but with a strong rational and anti-authority philosophy. And although I don’t think of them as purely anti-religious, if your religion is one with an authoritarian streak then … Interesting character.

U.S. Perpetuates Mass Killings In Iraq
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-28-2008    3
I couldn't care less who wins the elections. Looking at both candidates, it seems America isn't the least bit interested in real change. Is anyone asking the candidates about what they are going to do about the US' slow but steady slide into fascism? Or about limiting presidential power? Or about banning torture? Or about the return of Habeus Corpus? Or about extraordinary renditions and secret prisons? Or about preemptive aggression? Or about making your war criminals pay for their crimes? Hmm? Anyone? No. No. Let's just keep it entertaining, low key and unsubstantial. Let's talk about lipstick! Yeah! Blacks vs whites, Democrats vs Republicans, pro-life vs pro-choice, Christians vs atheists blah blah blah... "Divide and conquer!". The power elite working behind the scenes have that pat down and the US citizenry is blissfully (perhaps willingly) oblivious... *shaking my head in disbelief* Oops! No time to comment any more! The O'Reilly Factor's on! No spin! Really!

India has had bird flu but is banning poultry related products from nations that have had it too - I
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-26-2008
India has meat eaters but is predominately a vegan nation - but they raise poultry to export and have had outbreaks of avian flu in their flocks. Now they are banning importation of poultry products from other nations that have similarly afflicted. It all sounds a bit ironic, oxymoronic, and strange. Will they complain when and if other nations ban the import of birds from India? There are smart ways to break the pandemic threat but India and others are not looking beyond the easy and political.

Santeria followers fight for religious freedom
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  9-25-2008
Pichardo thought Santeria needed to be more organized to enjoy its full legal rights. He put those rights to the test in the late 1980s, when he tried to open a worship hall in Hialeah. Many of his fellow Cuban-Americans howled in protest. Some said it was Satanic or anti-Christian. They also protested the slaying of animals on the property, and in 1987, the city council passed a law banning "public ritualistic animal sacrifices." The church argued that its constitutional religious rights had been violated, and six years later, the law was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.
