The Feral Child
CrazyRedHead
by CrazyRedHead  8-5-2008    3
She weighed 46 pounds. She was malnourished and anemic. In the pediatric intensive care unit they tried to feed the girl, but she couldn't chew or swallow solid food. So they put her on an IV and let her drink from a bottle. Aides bathed her, scrubbed the sores on her face, trimmed her torn fingernails. They had to cut her tangled hair before they could comb out the lice. Her caseworker determined that she had never been to school, never seen a doctor. She didn't know how to hold a doll, didn't understand peek-a-boo. "Due to the severe neglect," a doctor would write, "the child will be disabled for the rest of her life." Hunched in an over sized crib, Danielle curled in on herself like a potato bug, then writhed angrily, kicking and thrashing. To calm herself, she batted at her toes and sucked her fists. "Like an infant," one doctor wrote.

Human Behavior:Taking More Risks Because You Feel Safe
dakotayii
by dakotayii  6-20-2008
"There is a tendency for people to say, 'If things are safer, then I will take more risk,' " he added. "It does not have to involve government interventions: Drugs are developed to reduce blood pressure, so people say, 'Okay, I can eat more, and it does not matter if I gain weight, because I can take this pill.'" Previous research has shown that people drive faster in vehicles that feel safer, attempt to bike on more dangerous terrain when they wear helmets and pay less attention to infants being bathed when the children are in seats that are said to reduce the risk of drowning.

Boy Dies Of Dry Drowning
Socratoad
by Socratoad  6-7-2008    2
"Dr Daniel Rauch, pediatrician at New York University Langone Medical Center, who spoke to Meredith Vieira on the TODAY show, said there are three important signs that parents and carers should look out for: difficulty breathing, extreme tiredness, and changes in behaviour. All three symptoms result from the brain not getting enough oxygen because of water in the lungs."

How to BBQ a Healthier Burger
boozich
by boozich  5-24-2008
While marinades are best because they cover the whole surface, simply shaking on dried herbs may reap the same health benefits. "Barbeque sauces seem to work too," Smith added. Just make sure you shake or smear on spices before you get to the grill. Once the cooking process begins, the HCAs are there to stay

Woman's Account of Civil War Battle--caring for wounded
blueridge
by blueridge  4-7-2008    5
A very moving account. This southern woman gives an account of caring for the thousands of wounded that day, describing in detail what modern authors cannot even imagine. Historical reality is very awakening and sobering to consider. People wrote with pen then more vividly than modern screen writers. These words of hers bring images from print to mind... The Civil War claimed over 620,000* (*corrected) lives, more than all other U.S. wars combined to present, fighting not merely the Northern States but the Federal government in Washington! The fruits of Yankee-controlled government are now plain to see. People today think little of the reality of war, beyond news and political debates. This moving and touching scene in this woman's account shows it up close and personal. People should consider more what this war was really about if they consider the numbers involved, and that combat was often hand to hand, not bombing from a safe distance or high in the sky.

"Scientists (internationally speaking) are probably in the best situation they've been in for a long time to study and understand the causes of the Northern Lights," comments Dr Jim Wild of the University of Lancaster. "All of these projects (many of them led by the US) involve international collaboration. It's ironic that the UK has decided to choose now to basically wind-down science in this area."

Frog killer fungus 'breakthrough'
Amergin
by Amergin  10-30-2007
We found that we could cure them completely of chytrids," said Phil Bishop from the University of Otago. "And even when they were really sick in the control group, we managed to bring them back almost from the dead." "You could put them on their back and they just wouldn't right themselves, they would just lie there. You could then treat them with chloramphenicol and they would come right," Dr Bishop explained. But the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) expressed caution at the news. Wildlife epidemiologist Dr Trent Garner said there would be reluctance to take up chloramphenicol as a solution, certainly in Europe and North America, because of the chemical's link to harmful side-effects in humans.

I'm Going To Hell
debbyski
by debbyski  10-19-2007    2
"I sinned by using a credit card (taking on debts, per Romans 13:8), not giving thanks after -- not before -- my meal (Deuteronomy 8:10), telling the waitress that "I'll have the burger" without adding "God willing" (James 4:13-15) and "cursing the ruler of thy people," George Bush (Exodus 22:28). The Republicans should focus more on that Scripture instead of putting so much emphasis on Leviticus and sodomy."
