POPSStinging Tentacles Offer Hint of Oceans’ Decline The explosion of jellyfish populations, scientists say, reflects a combination of severe overfishing of natural predators, like tuna, sharks and swordfish; rising sea temperatures caused in part by global warming; and pollution that has depleted oxygen levels in coastal shallows. These problems are pronounced in the Mediterranean, a sea bounded by more than a dozen countries that rely on it for business and pleasure. Left unchecked in the Mediterranean and elsewhere, these problems could make the swarms of jellyfish menacing coastlines a grim vision of seas to come. “The problem on the beach is a social problem,” said Dr. Gili, who talks with admiration of the “beauty” of the globular jellyfish. “We need to take care of it for our tourism industry. But the big problem is not on the beach. It’s what’s happening in the seas.”

POPS Camilla d'Errico Release: "Malificent"
can't get this bit to clip - but here is the intro from juxtapoz: Fresh off a sold out solo exhibition at LA's Copro Nason gallery, Camilla d'Errico is gearing up for so much more - starting with a new print release from Paper Tiger. Titled Malificent, this beauty is an edition of only 25, and is sure to be a collectors dream. Already a comic industry veteran, Camilla realized she could expand her style into a variety of other industries; snowboards, magazine covers, toys, clothes. Camilla has begun to carve out a niche for herself in the fine art field thanks to her fiery nature, high level of ambition and persistence in following her dream. Her work is characterized by an emotional complexity that spans the full array of human emotions and touches the soul. She is part of what may be the first art movement in Western history where women are not second-class citizens, but may even have an edge in the mind of the public, especially when it comes to capturing the essence that is wo

POPSThai school offers transsexual toilet Thailand is well known for its tolerance of transgender men, and they are very visible in everyday life. Sex-change surgery has become a speciality of the Thai health industry, and it is relatively inexpensive; patients come here from all over the world for the operation. Despite their high profile in Thailand, transsexuals complain that they are still stereotyped - they can find work easily enough as entertainers, in the beauty industry, the media, or as prostitutes, but it is much harder to become a transgender lawyer or investment banker. And their biggest complaint is that they cannot change their legal status. Despite a proposal during the drafting of a new constitution last year, to allow them to change the gender on their identity cards, this has not yet been approved. What the third toilet looks like .

POPSWorld is 'effeminate' thanks to men's fashion... I don't know anything about the men in Kazakhstan, but I'm sure noticing it in our Western culture. On change-over at my last tennis match, two young mothers were talking about the horrors of *violence* in children's books at their local library but laughing that their little boys enjoyed playing dress-up with their little sisters' princess outfits. I'm sure I'll get a lot of flack, but give me a boy who wants to play dodge ball, king-of-the-mountain, search for bugs and toads, etc...any day. I believe a lot of men are having an identity crisis and I can't blame it on the fashion industry. I say "what fashion"?

POPSTop 10 Crimes Against Your Body
When I opened this article, I thought it was going to be one of those same ole, same ole's, about smoking, drinking, overeating and unsafe sex, all the nasty, enjoyable habits we've grown to love. I was surprised to see it was about the rush to improve one's appearance by seeking out deadly cosmetic surgeries of sort. This is another one of those by-products from the advertisement industry who use "beautiful people" to sell the crap we buy... Subconscious messages are planted during these many ads, shoved in our faces, via magazines, newspapers, TV and any media we may tap into, to get entertained or informed. These ads, on a subconscious level make us feel ugly and useless because we don't resemble the actors or models who seem to enjoy their lives so much better than we. So what does one do to join the "beautiful people" crowd? They go under the knife! A big collective OUCH! http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/05/06/top-10-crimes-against-your-body.aspx

POPSErasing Ethnicity I think it is so sad when people don't embrace their heritage. As a African-American woman, I would never try to look like anything else but me. White isn't always right! (Don't kill me for that, I was only kidding. To an extent :)
