POPSRitalin Over-Prescribed to Children Finally, it has occurred to someone that some behavioral problems in children could be due to lack of discipline. Now, add to that the excessive use of caffeine and sugar, as well as immersion in TV and video games, and we may have a clue as to what really causes hyperactivity.

POPSHow Personalities Evolved "Game theory’ is used to predict the behaviour of individuals when making choices that depend on the choices of others. First developed as a tool for understanding economic behaviour, game theory is increasingly used in many diverse fields, ranging from biology and psychology to sociology and philosophy. Using a mathematical model developed by Professor John McNamara the team adapted the theory to allow individuals playing the ‘game’ to have some variation in their personalities to start with, and to monitor each other’s cooperative tendencies as the game was being played."

POPSSmart amoebas reveal origins of primitive intelligence "Now they have identified a potential storage device. The amoeba's interior contains a watery sol – a solid suspended in liquid – within a thick viscous gel. The sol flows through the gel like water through a sponge, creating a network of low-viscosity channels. Those channels are strengthened as long as the amoeba continues to respond to a static environment, but if that environment changes the channels gradually break down and a new network appears as the amoeba adapts. For a short while, though, the amoeba retains a “memory” of those earlier conditions."

POPS''The Hand of God'' CHEAT However talented, skillful, all brought down to zero with his ''cheat goal'' and later glorify it. His behaviour off-field proves he is not a sound role model for next generation. Media playing it down too is guilty.

POPSYes, Kids Belong in Pubs After all, initiating your children into the ritual of popping to the pub for a drink and a packet of crisps is a lovely way to carry on the pub-going tradition. I totally disagree! Go to a café instead! There are many things in this world that are restricted to adults. Drinking, driving, sex, etc. Should we maybe let kids get behind the wheel of a car, because it's the perfect way to introduce them to road safety? Or drag them to strip joints to educate them in finer points of the human anatomy? I think not. Keep kids out of pubs and let us have our beer in peace! Is nothing sacred anymore? I'd like to suggest we also ban... Australians, because they can get pretty trolleyed and start calling everyone "mate". Now stop right there! Seeing that Aussies in pubs, are probably what has saved the world economy from TOTALLY collapsing, I suggest you drop your racism, Pom! .. . Clip Tube

POPSWhen thoughts of death turn to environmentalism "It appears that certain people derive existentially important feelings of self-esteem from pro-environmental behaviour and thus respond to concerns about mortality with increased concern for the well-being of the natural world," the researchers said. "These self-esteem investments can thus transform the protection of the natural world into an existentially relevant behaviour which can similarly function to mitigate concerns with our vulnerability to death."

POPSBBC on parenting and health This BBC summary of recent child development data shows differences along cultural lines (for which the writer uses the term 'ethnic'). What is clear from the data is that parents matter tremendously.
