Sexual Desires Don't Have To Fade
debbyski
by debbyski  11-17-2008    4
I get so tired of that shit thrown at everyone by the media that only the young and beautiful are to enjoy the privilege of satisfying sex and everyone else is either a pervert or unworthy somehow. Why should anyone be denied the beauty of that sort of closeness between two human beings and who has the right to qualify that in any way? It's a part of the celebration of life and older adults should never feel somehow shameful or dirty for enjoying their lives to the fullest. YAY for them.

The Greenhouse Gas That Nobody Knew
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  11-17-2008
It's like eating mushrooms. You would soon be dead if you ate every mushroom that you didn't know was poisonous or not. The only sensible way to eat mushrooms is to only eat those you already know are not poisonous. Intelligent beings use the precautionary principle, business and technological innovators eat any mushroom / chemical they can find with the result that they (and the rest of us) are more like to end up prematurely dead. Wise men know that innovation is deadly dangerous, and that societies which are based on it risk extinction.

Mormon's Tipped The Scale
debbyski
by debbyski  11-15-2008    3
I guess there is a way to justify denying human beings the same rights as everyone else and that is to call it "pro-marriage" and not "anti-gay". Of course it's a clever play on words to describe a bigot but what else is new? If the Mormons and other small minded individuals are really interested in saving the institution of marriage they would forget about same-sex unions and focus their efforts on divorce.

We call them sages, hermits, ascetics, mystics, enlightened souls. They came, healed, acted as beacons and showed mankind the way out of the darkness in which it was enmeshed.

BREAST is BEST... for health
joejoepmc
by joejoepmc  11-10-2008
Fairly recent article! The words Glycoslation... Oligosaccharides! Glycans... Cell Communication. Oh they just stir a wonderment in my soul. What a profoundly important article for all human beings. Not only in the role of saccharides as pertains to newborns, but all human beings. I guess those crazy people at Mannatech have been right all these years? Maybe I should go out and buy some Ambrotose since they have the patent on the combination of all 8 necessary saccharides. I feel better already just knowing this.

A BREAST of Fresh Air
joejoepmc
by joejoepmc  11-10-2008    3
Seeing this article reminded me that profession often dictates perspective i.e - a surgeon will want to operate, a baker will want to bake... and in this case a doctor specializing in asthma... will look for a way to suggest suckling milk increases lung efficiency? While this is a good news article - I think too often the truth is slighted and spun in favor of one's own professional bias. But alas, we live in a world of bias. PS - who is paying for all these studies to tell us breast milk is good for babies... isn't that fact just as old as human beings? Search google for "oligosaccharides in breast milk" if you want the bigger scoop. To sum it up breastmilk is the only natural source of all necessary glyconutrients which are derived from oligosaccharides contained in breaskmilk. These are responsible for cellular communication, bacterial intestinal health, brain development, lung health, allergy health, immune system. More to come... I am on a BREAST QUEST!

The Pattern Recognition Theory of Humour by Alastair Clarke answers the centuries old question of what is humour. Clarke explains how and why we find things funny and identifies the reason humour is common to all human societies, its fundamental role in the evolution of homo sapiens and its continuing importance in the cognitive development of infants.

How Personalities Evolved
einbar
by einbar  11-9-2008
"Game theory’ is used to predict the behaviour of individuals when making choices that depend on the choices of others. First developed as a tool for understanding economic behaviour, game theory is increasingly used in many diverse fields, ranging from biology and psychology to sociology and philosophy. Using a mathematical model developed by Professor John McNamara the team adapted the theory to allow individuals playing the ‘game’ to have some variation in their personalities to start with, and to monitor each other’s cooperative tendencies as the game was being played."

Is Proposition 8 Behind the 8 Ball? It should be!
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  11-9-2008    2
When I read the questions on my Fl. ballot, I thought, “Why is Prop 8 there in all it's intolerance?” This election should be about issues not the same old worn out divisions, propagandized by the religious right for far too long. The GUNS, GAYS AND GOD mantra Karl Rove and his like, peddled, until the United States did not resemble anything UNITED, more like The Divided States of Amer. How naive of me, believing their divisive plan didn’t work and was therefore, over. With Separation of church & state a survivor. But here it was a religious question written into a civil ballot. Then, I thought, PROP 8 WILL SURELY BE DEFEATED... Wrong again. What will it take to keep religion out of the lives of people who do not wish to buy into it? What will it take to keep the prying eyes of the law out of our sexual orientation? It probably will never end but when the blind faith of religion wishes to erase that separation, we who are in possession of common sense must always fight back.

Leave Our Sex Alone
debbyski
by debbyski  11-6-2008    7
"These treasures are so personal, so exclusively private and our own, and at the same time so irrelevant to the lives of others, that, really, the pleasures of our own flesh are the most natural and innocent of all pleasures human beings pursue. Enjoyment our own bodies and those of other people in consensual harmony takes resources away from no starving people; it exploits no one, nor defrauds them of their labor. It humiliates no one and costs nothing. It is so purely human, innocent and wonderful that it is no wonder that organized humanity has gotten jealous of our ownership of it, and so eager to drag it kicking and screaming into the public eye, where it can be "defined" and dirtied, lied about, battered in filth and deep-fried in faith to create this new, needlessly unhealthy monstrosity."

When is a human a human?
Oortcloud

"Try this thought experiment: you’re walking down the street, and you see a building on fire. You enter it to help anyone out, and see it’s a lab. On one side is a five-year-old boy, and the other is a petri dish clearly labeled as having a dozen fertilized eggs in it. You only have time to rescue the boy or the eggs. What do you do? I would argue that it would be, ironically, an inhuman act to rescue the dish. Yet, according to the law if Prop 48 passes, you would have just chosen to let 12 human beings die to save one."

The Venus Project

Through the implementation of a resource-based economy, and a multitude of innovative and environmentally friendly technologies directly applied to the social system, The Venus Project proposals will dramatically reduce crime, poverty, hunger, homelessness, and many other pressing problems that are common throughout the world today. One of the cornerstones of the organization's findings is the fact that many of the dysfunctional behaviors of today's society stem directly from the dehumanizing environment inherent in the existing monetary system. Moreover, the currently utilized random implementation of automation and other technologies have resulted in a fragmented, self-defeating trend occurring throughout the manufacturing and high-tech sec

Bees Can Count To Four

They really have a lot of the capacities that we so-called higher human beings possess. This, from an insect! Yet humans still treat animals as second-class citizens of this planet. Let's hope we still have bees around in the future. The bee die-off, or "colony collapse disorder" has still not been resolved. We need them, more than they need us, that's for sure.

As a first step toward this neuroaesthetic question, the Connor laboratory plans to collaborate with the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore to study human responses to sculptural shape. .My interest is in finding out what happens between a visitor's brain and a work of art," said Vikan. "Knowing what effect art has on patrons' brains will contribute to techniques of display -- lighting and color and arrangement -- that will enhance their experiences when they come into the museum".

Pillar of Unbelief - Freud
Efrain Alvarado
by Efrain Alvarado  10-26-2008    4
First, Freud's "super-ego" is not the intellect or conscience, but the unfree, passive reflection in the individual's psyche of society's restrictions on his desires—"thou shalt nots." What we take to be our own insight into real good and evil is only a mirror of man-made social laws, according to Freud. Second, the "ego" is not free will but a mere facade. Freud denied the existence of free will, he was a determinist and saw man as a complex animal-machine. Finally, the "id" ("it") is the only real self, according to Freud, and it's comprised simply of animal desires. It is impersonal; thus the name "it." Freud thus is denying the existence of a real personality, individual I-ness. Just as he denied God ("I Am"), he denies God's image, the human "I."
