POPSPatriarch for life The ailing Patriarch of Serbia, Pavle, asked leave of the Synod of Bishops to retire but so far the bishops have showed no sign of acceding to his request. Perhaps they realise that it will be very difficult to find anyone to take his place.

POPSUN asks ICJ to rule on Kosovo independence
Speaking on behalf of the United States, which was among the first to recognize Kosovo's independence, representative Rosemary DiCarlo called the resolution "unnecessary and unhelpful". Vuk Jeremic ©AFP/File - Dieter Nagl "Kosovo's independence is irreversible," she told the General Assembly. "We are confident that recognition of Kosovo's independence by an ever-increasing number of states is consistent with international law." She added: "We do not think it appropriate or fair to the court to ask it to opine on what is essentially a matter that is reserved to the judgment of member states." Serbia, which aspires to join the European Union, still considers Kosovo one of its provinces, and Russia -- a veto-wielding member of the UN Security Council -- has strongly backed Belgrade in the dispute. A Western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it could take the ICJ up to two years to render its non-binding opinion on the legality of Kosovo's independence. Ethnic

POPSSerbia convinces UN to reconsider Kosovo Analyst Dusan Janjic said it remained to be seen when a vote would be put on the crowded UN agenda. He said that in the light of Iraq, Iran and Georgia and the delicate relationship between the United States and Russia, Serbia’s Kosovo resolution was a marginal topic and might well be left until next year. "We shouldn’t therefore draw a wrong conclusion," Janjic said. "We should push ahead with our initiative, but without using too much energy," he added. Serbia decided to ask for the opinion of the ICJ, after the United States and most European Union countries recognised Kosovo's independence despite Belgrade’s opposition. A total of 47 countries worldwide have so far recognised Kosovo.

POPSU.S. Seeks Extradition Of Serbian Basketball Player As a condition of his release, Kovacevic surrendered his Serbian passport, but Serbian Deputy Consul Igor Milosevic allegedly furnished Kovacevic with travel documents. The Serbian Foreign Ministry said Milosevic is facing disciplinary action for issuing the new documents. "The case of Miladin Kovacevic, who is reported to have brutally beaten a fellow student half his size even after he was unconscious, and then fled the United States while awaiting trial, is shocking," Munter said in the statement. Kovacevic, who is reported to have brutally beaten a fellow student half his size even after he was unconscious, and then fled the United States while awaiting trial, is shocking," Munter said. The two countries' treaties effectively bar them from extraditing their own citizens. But legal experts said loopholes could be found that would allow the return of the basketball player since he fled the U.S. to avoid prosecution.

POPSUN Police Storm Kosovo Courthouse >>>>>>Five peacekeepers injured<<<<<<<<< The demonstrators -- many of whom worked in Kosovo's judiciary before the territory came under the administration of the United Nations Albanian Kosovo.in 1999 -- said they wanted to set up their own court. Kosovo's government unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on February 17 and has since been recognised by many Western countries. Serbia and Kosovo Serbs vehemently reject the move as illegal. Half of the city of Kosovska Mitrovica, north of the river Ibar, and the mineral-rich region around it is home to 40,000 Serbs who have long insisted they do not wish to live in an independent, mainly ethnic Albanian Kosovo. Along with a further 80,000 Serbs living in enclaves surrounded by Albanian communities south of the Ibar, and the Serbian government in Belgrade, they have refused to accept the territory's independence declaration.

POPSChina's Army Builds For Reach Past Taiwan, U.S. Says Other Contingencies The report concludes that China is thinking beyond Taiwan. ``Analysis of China's military acquisitions and strategic thinking suggests Beijing is also developing capabilities for use in other contingencies, such as conflict over resources or disputed territories,'' it says. Cyber Warfare The report also says that China is increasing its capabilities in space and cyberwarfare. ``In both those areas there's reason for concern,'' said David Sedney, assistant secretary of defense for East Asia. The system will be operational in the next two to three weeks, he said. He noted that no one in China ``picked up the phone'' when U.S. officials called after a B-2 bomber accidentally bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in May 1999.

POPSLooting for Kosovo. BELGRADE (Reuters) - A video of two young women looting with gay abandon during rioting in the Serbian capital Belgrade was becoming a Balkan smash hit on the video-sharing Web site YouTube Friday. Police arrested some looters but public humiliation by YouTube may prove a far more painful punishment for the pair, whose spree Thursday night was also aired on local television stations and was being discussed across the Internet. A persistent amateur cameraman followed the women as they loaded up with chocolates at a corner shop, came out giggling, then went after designer bags, shoes and clothes at Belgrade's swankiest stores in its vandalized main shopping street.
