POPSSwapped bodies Experiment They provided male and female volunteers with sensory input to convince them that they had switched bodies with another person or"Neither male nor female participants had any trouble convincing themselves that they had entered the body of the male mannequin. Similarly, when male volunteers were given sensory input from the female experimenter, they readily believed that they had swapped bodies with her. And as surreal as the experience was, presenter Valeria Petkova reported that the subjects were ready for another go: “Our subjects experienced this illusion as being exciting and strange, and often said that they wanted to come back and try it again.”

POPSEarth would be heading to a freeze without CO2 emissions The chill would induce a long, stable period of glaciation in the mid-latitudes, smothering Europe, Asia and North America to about 45-50 degrees latitude with a thick sheet of ice. However, there is now so much CO2 in the air, as a result of fossil-fuel burning and deforestation, that this adds a heat-trapping greenhouse effect that will offset the cooling impacts of orbital shift, said Crowley. "Even the level that we have there now is more than sufficient to reach that critical state seen in the model," he said. "If we cut back some, that would probably still be enough." In September, a scientific research consortium called the Global Carbon Project (GCP) said that atmospheric concentrations of CO2 reached 383 parts per million (ppm) in 2007, or 37 percent above pre-industrial levels. Present concentrations are "the highest during the last 650,000 years and probably during the last 20 million years," the report said.

POPSGarrett to push point to whalers Saw a bit on how the Aussies do it. No inconvenience to the whales and the scientists get all they need. Use a weapon which fires a small container into the whale, pulls out easily with a bit of whale inside. At least it is a more positive attitude than just shooting the Japanese.

POPSMormon's Tipped The Scale I guess there is a way to justify denying human beings the same rights as everyone else and that is to call it "pro-marriage" and not "anti-gay". Of course it's a clever play on words to describe a bigot but what else is new? If the Mormons and other small minded individuals are really interested in saving the institution of marriage they would forget about same-sex unions and focus their efforts on divorce.

POPSA Powerful Love Story This is a wonderful film for all women everywhere. I do like the novel better (I love Fannie Flagg) but it's charming and full of empowerment. I wanna go visit the Whistle Stop Cafe because the town loves and accepts everyone that society tells them not to. The best line in the film for me was when Ruth was asked why she ran away from her husband to shack up with Igdie and she asserts, "Because she's the best friend I've ever had, and I love her." Do yourself a favor and watch it with someone special--for the first time or again :)

POPSBlackwater Busted, Prince Has "Compliance Challenges" Makes one smile. The arrogant Prince of Blackwater just got nailed with a big fine from the same corrupt Federal government they contracted with. The "war on terrorism" is so profitable. What happened to all the hardware that ended up on the black market in Iraq? (Someone knows). "Compliance challenges", he says. More like rogue operations. This is the same company that shoots whoever is in the area and quickly leaves, whose crimes even U.S. military personnel have reported. Dirty mercenaries are never held accountable for war crimes because they are independent contractors. This is the least the State Dept has on them, just the tip of the proverbial ice berg. Iraq wants to try them there.

POPSEmail President Bush To Grant Executive Pardon To Border Agents for drug smuggling. The Washington Times quotes T. J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, as being critical with the timing of the indictment against Aldrete Davila. "Osvaldo Aldrete Davila should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for these felonies two years ago," said Mr. Bonner, whose group represents more than 12,000 Border Patrol agents. "This deliberate and unconscionable delay directly resulted in the wrongful incarceration of two innocent law-enforcement officers." According to Drug Enforcement Administration documents obtained by The Times, DEA investigators believed they had sufficient evidence to indict Aldrete Davila in late 2005, but their requests to do so were denied by Mr. Sutton's office.

POPSTime to test time Yet if Hogan's ideas are right, noise associated with this fundamental fuzziness should be prominent at GEO600, a joint British and German machine operating near Hannover, Germany, that is searching for gravitational waves. These waves are thought to arise during events such as the massive cosmic collisions of black holes and neutron stars. Confirmation of the idea — which could come as experimental upgrades to GEO600 are put in place over the coming year — would be a big step towards a verifiable quantum theory of gravity, a long-sought unification of quantum mechanics (the physics of the very small) with general relativity (the physics of the very big). Hogan outlines his predictions in a paper published on 30 October in Physical Review D1.

POPSChina Tells Rich Polluting Nations To Change Lifestyle China wants technology aid to feature in that pact, which negotiators hope to seal in Copenhagen late next year. Climate officials gathered in Beijing welcomed China's growing activism on the issue but questioned its proposal, especially with an economic downturn draining coffers. "It is undeniable that the financial crisis will have an impact on the climate change negotiations," said Yvo de Boer, who heads the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat. "If we go to citizens under the current circumstances ... and say 'I'm increasing your tax burden in order to pay for climate policy', that might not go down very well," he told Reuters. But Beijing will wait to see what U.S. President-elect Barack Obama offers in greenhouse gas goals and aid before showing more of its own bargaining cards, said Hedegaard. POPSResearchers 'fake' spam and learn how it makes money "After 26 days, and almost 350 million e-mail messages, only 28 sales resulted," wrote the researchers. The response rate for this campaign was less than 0.00001%. This is far below the average of 2.15% reported by legitimate direct mail organisations. "Taken together, these conversions would have resulted in revenues of $2,731.88—a bit over $100 a day for the measurement period," said the researchers. Scaling this up to the full Storm network the researchers estimate that the controllers of the vast system are netting about $7,000 (£4,430) a day or more than $2m (£1.28m) per year.

POPSAn open apology to boomers everywhere “We heard the voice of a man who can inspire with his words, who's unashamed of his own intelligence, who's willing to treat the citizens of this country like smart, capable people, worthy of respect.” So unlike Bush and his neo-cons. “For the first time in some of our lifetimes, we believed.” 60’s idealism coming full circle. With a little less violence.

POPSFirst Ever Images From Cockpit of Flight 175 on 9/11 We have decided not to try and match the faces of the terrorists with the photos issued by the authorities for two reasons. Firstly the images displayed are not clear enough to do that conclusively and secondly, some of the terrorists that were shown in the published photographs are believed to be still alive, which questions the reliability of the information. Whilst many questions may still remain regarding the 9/11 attack, we hope that this information will resolve some of them. As always, you must judge for yourself the information we have presented and it is up to you to decide what actually happened on flight 175 just over 7 years ago.
