POPSUS Army Field Manual 34-52 on Interrogation of Insurgent Captives and Suspects Excerpt from the US Army Field Manual on the guarantee of basic human rights extended under Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions to non-uniformed enemies. This has been official US policy since 1949. Humane treatment of insurgent captives should extend far beyond compliance with Article 3, if for no other reason than to render them more suceptible to interrogation.... Furthermore, brutality by either capturing troops or friendly interrogators will reduce defections and serve as grist for the insurgent's propaganda mill.
