POPSThe Telling Tale of Two Cities
It’s a tale of two cities. In one, a gapping maw to a deepening abyss warns all to “abandon hope, ye who enter here.” In the other, a shining beacon atop a hill carries the message of “The Man in the Arena,” “whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood … who best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement.” And they know that there are plenty enough fossil fuels on and off U.S. shores to supply the needs of every single American for many decades to come. Ironically, achieving such energy independence is essentially a matter of heeding the words of a Man in the Arena more than four decades ago from a speech he never got to give. The remarks John Kennedy was to give at the Dallas Trade Mart in the early afternoon of November 22, 1963, included the admonition, “America's leadership must be guided by the lights of learning and reason or else those who confuse rhetoric with reality and the plausible with the possible will gain the popular ascendancy.”

POPSHard Roads Ahead Ex Governor Wise did one of the best things for our state which was to create the PROMISE scholarship program. However, he did not run again for office because he was a married man who had an affair, and obviously the voters in this state thought his personal life was more important than his accomplishments. It's a shame because our current governor is rumored to have many more skeletons in his closet, but he keeps them under the covers so to speak, and I've seen him do NOTHING for this state IMHO. Get with the program here baby, shhhhhhhhh . . . do what you want and get down and dirty when the lights are low and just carry your Bible in the meantime, it's God, Country, and the red, white, and blue.

situation — and that his EPA will implement something faster than anything the EPA has ever done before. Which is another way of describing his vow today to give the economy up to two years to bring emissions back down to 2005 levels. He says that the free-ride granted to most of the world proved the undoing of these “Protocols”. The fact that none of the parties which promised emission reductions have any clue how to actually reduce emissions, and therefore are not doing so, would seem to me to be a more central feature in Kyoto’s failure. First, McCain’s conceit in this speech and in his global-warming views generally are impervious to changing evidence: the problem of man-made climate change is real, bad, and here now. Second, McCain’s ultimate goal for “doing something” is, at best, unclear. He says “The goal in all of this is to assure an energy supply that is safe, secure, diverse, and domestic.” It has failed in Europe. He tries to elide this fact, but fails.

POPSAdlai Stevenson's ''Nature of Patriotism'' Speech, 1952
The tragedy of our day is the climate of fear in which we live, and fear breeds repression. The United States has very large power in the world today. And the partner of power-the corollary-is responsibility. It is our high task to use our power with a sure hand and a steady touch-with the self-restraint that goes with confident strength. The purpose of our power must never be lost in the fact of our power-and the purpose, I take it, is the promotion of freedom, justice and peace in the world. We talk a great deal about patriotism. What do we mean by patriotism in the context of our times? I venture to suggest that what we mean is a sense of national responsibility which will enable America to remain master of her power-to walk with it in serenity and wisdom, with self-respect and the respect to all mankind; a patriotism that puts country ahead of self; a patriotism which is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.
