POPShomemade mixes: spiced evaporated milk for masala chai If you keep a can of spice-infused evaporated* milk in the refrigerator, they say, it'll be ready whenever the craving for chai arises. Sounds worth trying. *I assume this is what the recipe means by "unsweetened condensed milk", as I've never seen "unsweetened condensed milk" on the shelf of any of the groceries I shop at (including the Indian and East & South Asian shops). I'm not sure why they call for unsweetened, though, since masala chai is ordinarily heavily sweetened. One guidebook I read said "just look away while the chai-wallah stirs the sugar into your chai — you don't want to know how much he's using. Really, you don't." :-D

POPScaffeine in the diet The caffeine content of coffee depends on the type of coffee bean. Beans from the plant species robusta generally have more caffeine than those from the arabica species. Arabica beans generally produce a more full-bodied flavor. These beans are the ones likely to be found in gourmet coffee shops. The roasting and brewing of coffee also play a part. Contrary to popular belief, darker roasted beans actually have less caffeine. The heat literally roasts out the caffeine.

POPSTop 10 Foods That Increase Cancer Risk (cont.)About 1,444,920 new cases of cancer were expected to be diagnosed last year–while 559, 650 people were expected to die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. POPSWill Government Ever Learn From The Past? I doubt it. Today's Delancey's Place Tidbit, gives a brief encounter of what happened when the US Government "forced" a whole nation to go dry. What followed was a horrific scene of "forced" drunkenness, "forced" crime and "forced" misery... Today's Government "forced" War on Drugs has produced similar anguish especially for those who seek marijuana to relieve pain and suffering. Not to mention, if this so-called Governmental War on Drugs would lax some of its absurdities, the revenue collected from such sales would help the sinking economy. But it is not about a failing policy, it's all about politics and getting elected. Common sense, must take a back seat once again. Stupidity continues to rule, as time marches on! thinkingblue

POPSBig Mac Attack "I'll take foods I haven't eaten for over a decade, Alex." Sounds good, though. These sorts of stocks have been rallying a bit because traders look for "safe harbors" during rough economic times.

POPSWhat is a Windfall Profit? Maybe they have in mind profit margins as a percentage of sales. Yet by that standard Exxon's profits don't seem so large. Exxon's profit margin stood at 10% for 2007, which is hardly out of line with the oil and gas industry average of 8.3%, or the 8.9% for U.S. manufacturing (excluding the sputtering auto makers). If that's what constitutes windfall profits, most of corporate America would qualify.Chemicals had an average margin of 12.7%. Computers: 13.7%. Electronics and appliances: 14.5%. Pharmaceuticals (18.4%) and beverages and tobacco (19.1%) round out the Census Bureau's industry rankings. But if 10% is the new standard, the tech industry is going to have to rethink its growth arc. LG, the electronics company, saw its profits grow by 505% in 2007. General Electric profits by investing in the alternative energy technology that Obama says Congress should subsidize GE's profit margin in 2007 was 10.3%, about the same asExxon's.
