POPSElection Night Timetable 10 p.m.: Voting ends in GOP-held, Iowa, Montana and Nevada, a combined 15 votes. Losing these would be a setback for McCain, while winning them would be a boon for Obama. Utah's five votes are a certainty for McCain. • 11 p.m.: Four states — mega-prize California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington — are expected to quickly give Obama a combined 77 votes, while Idaho is expected to award its four votes to McCain. • 1 a.m.: Capping off the night is Alaska, where GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is governor. The Republican ticket is a shoo-in for those three votes. And then it's over. Or not.

POPSOfficial Accidentally Demonstates E-Voting Problems on Film This video of an election official trying (and failing) to debunk claims of e-voting problems makes it clearer to me than ever before just why e-voting has been such a disaster: Wishful thinking on the part of non-technical morons who seem willing to discount practically any problem with machines that make their jobs easier.

POPS$3,589 Worth of Elephant Shaped Chocolates When money is no object... -$20,000 simply on items classified as "event-donor gifts." -$9,000 at a jewelry and political paraphernalia shop in Washington D.C. -$6,000 to an art restoration company in Kensington, Maryland -$4,249.07 At Lands End -$955 On Golf Carts ...is this a sampling of McCain's idea of "fiscal responsibility" ? Seriously. This is how they are spending other people's money now, what does it tell you?

POPSWhat Color Is Your Elephant? With Republican running so far behind the Democratic Party in fundraising, it's no wonder the $150,000 spent on Sarah Palin's wardrobe caused a big fuss. However, the GOP has been making a lot of questionable purchases including a thousand 11-ounce chocolate elephants.

POPSPalin Plays Desperate Housewife for Votes Sarah lets her hair down. The final move of desperation, which was seen by her obvious flirting and winking directly into the camera during the VP debate, has now gone into full swing, in a desperate attempt to draw MEN voters for the ticket. (Vote for Sarah, if not for McCain). I thought I was the only one that noticed this (I can read her like a book) until I saw that Arianna Huffington was saying the same thing I was thinking. Woman are likely to see this more than men (from their own playbooks). ( Arianna would know (look) , their is a similarity in the "sexy hair" look.) "Only her hairdresser knows for sure"--and they quote her!

POPSIs The Film 'An American Carol' Being Sabotaged At The Box Office? Obviously, this type of "error" sometimes requires collusion between employees--a way of marking the ticket so that you are sent to the correct theater, even though you've been sold the wrong ticket. Before anyone jumps to conclusions and chalks this up to politics, the fact is this is a fairly rare but not unheard of occurrence. There have been payola scandals in the past and it usually has more to do with either juicing the numbers for a big budget release or, more prosaically, lazy or incompetent ticket sellers at the theaters. Would I put it past Hollywood to collude with theater owners to depress sales of AAC? No, but in this case I think it best to use Occam's Razor - everything being equal, the simplest and least complicated answer is probably the right one. “Please email us a picture of your ticket stub to: fraud@americancarol.com

POPSGOP Strategists See Big Nov. Losses "If you turn the clock back two or two and half weeks, you could make a plausible argument that if a couple of things go our way we will lose three to four Senate races," an unnamed strategist told WaPo . "Now we will lose six to eight." Polling in most Senate races over the past 14 days has shown a five-point decline for the Republican candidate, the strategist said. The piece continues: The picture in the House is similar. The generic ballot test -- a traditional measure of broad voter attitudes -- has also moved decisively in Democrats' direction in recent days. The latest NBC-Wall Street Journal and Associated Press polls showed voters favoring a generic Democratic candidate for Congress over a generic Republican by 13 points, while a recent Time magazine poll gave Democrats a 46 percent to 36 percent edge. It's looking more and more like 2006 all over again.

POPSRFK Jr. on Palin's Big Oil infatuation
Now John McCain has chosen as his running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a diligent student of Big Oil's crib sheets. She's something of a flat-earther who shares the current administration's contempt for science. Palin has expressed skepticism about evolution (which is like not believing in gravity), putting it on par with "creationism," which posits that the Earth was created 6,000 years ago. She used to insist that human activities have nothing to do with climate change. "I'm not one ... who would attribute it to being man-made," she said in August. After she joined the GOP ticket, she magically reversed herself, to a point. "Man's activities certainly can be contributing to the issue of global warming," she told Charles Gibson two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Alaska is melting before our eyes; entire villages erode as sea ice vanishes, glaciers are disappearing at a frightening clip, and "dancing forests" caused by disappearing permafrost astonish residents and tourists. Palin had to

POPSAn Alaskan's assessment of Palin "I don't know" is the operative here. My thinking is that we don't really know how she'll pan out in the campaign. She may do well tonight and in the debate and win some votes. Or she may bomb. I think she'll do ok, but in the end her radical positions like no birth control even for married couples will be her undoing with a broad swath of the electorate. She'll talk middle but she's a George Bush in a skirt, a radical right wing ideologue.

POPSVice In Go-Go Boots? "The legacy of Geraldine Ferraro was supposed to be that no one would ever go on a blind date with history again. But that crazy maverick and gambler McCain does it, and conservatives and evangelicals rally around him in admiration of his refreshingly cynical choice of Sarah, an evangelical Protestant and anti-abortion crusader who became a hero when she decided to have her baby, who has Down syndrome, and when she urged schools to debate creationism as well as that stuffy old evolution thing."

POPS A Reform Ticket Bear in mind that Mr. Murkowski had already served as junior U.S. Senator from Alaska for 22 years. Mr. Murkowski was junior senator for so long because Senator Ted Stevens (who was recently indicted for corruption) had lifetime tenure in the senior post. Shortly after joining the oil and gas commission, Mrs. Palin commenced an ethics probe of the state's Republican party chairman, Randy Ruedrich, involving conflicts of interest with oil companies. The probe resulted in a $12,000 fine for the party chair. She crossed party lines in 2004 to join a Democratic representative's ethics complaint over an international trade deal against the Republican Attorney General Gregg Renkes, who had ties to the Murkowski machine. Mr. Renkes resigned. In late 2005, Mrs. Palin announced her run for Governor before then-Governor Murkowski had announced his intention to stand for re-election. In a three-way primary, Mrs. Palin got 51% to Mr. Murkowski's 19%.

POPSSkunk at the Party Convention Roll Call columnist Stan Collender plays skunk at the garden party by pointing to the immediate governing challenges that President Obama or McCain will face. In essence, with the Bush administration planning to punt on the 2010 budget, the incoming administration faces a scramble to get its budget in by early February 2009. We'd point out that there will be big-ticket bills to attend to as well, such as the highway bill, up for reauthorization in 2009 (for more, click here http://www.forbes.com/beltway/2008/05/21/washington-lobbying-transportation-biz-wash-cz_atg_0521beltway.html)

POPSShoot the messenger Continues Stranahan...."Seems like I've touched a third rail here. I cross-posted this piece at Daily Kos and it got over 400 comments. Unfortunately, a large number of the comments were nothing but insults. One person suggested seriously that all the videos I've made lampooning Republicans (including my Mike Huckabee video that Kos himself called the 'best political parody of 2007) were just a ruse so I could weasel my way into the progressive blogosphere, apparently in anticipation of John Edwards being caught at hotel.
