College Drinking Debate: 18 or 21?
zizzy
by zizzy  8-19-2008
The minimum drinking age in Italy is 16. I've been in bars packed with teens and there was no excess drinking or obnoxious behavior. The only sloppy drunks I saw were two American kids outside of a bar in Florence: one was puking while the other was raving. http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/YouthIssues/1098903340.html

Guide to the Girls of Summer
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  7-24-2008    1
Her shoes are hot in Serbia, her dress is hot in France, and she’s hot in your brain. She knows she’s a knockout as she struts her stuff into Starbucks and then off to learn Kabbalah while sporting sun glasses that double as a motorcycle helmet. Woo her with celebrity gossip and a borderline gay knowledge of fashion designer’s names. The Illusionist She’s got you ball-parking her age at anywhere between 14 and 32. She’s got you telling your friend’s she’s the hottest girl you’ve ever seen as long as she isn’t capable of sending you to jail on dates. The rule of thumb is this: if she’s got the best body you’ve ever seen then she’s too young, as any girl your age has had a few years of binge drinking and a few trips on the boyfriend express to leave her a little bit like a second hand pair of rollerblades- you can still roll but the wheels are a little worn down. Woo the young one with Milton Bradley board games and Miley Cyrus on your iPod. The Walk of Shame Girl She’s the girl

I’m a Modern Man--CLASSIC GEORGE CARLIN
papananook
by papananook  7-24-2008
 I'm in the moment, on the edge, over the top, but under the radar. A high-concept, low-profile, medium-range ballistic missionary. A street-wise smart bomb. A top-gun bottom-feeder. I wear power ties, I tell power lies, I take power naps, I run victory laps. I'm a totally ongoing, big-foot, slam-dunk rainmaker with a pro-active outreach. A raging workaholic, a working rageaholic; out of rehab and in denial. I've got a personal trainer, a personal shopper, a personal assistant, and a personal agenda. You can't shut me up; you can't dumb me down. 'Cause I'm tireless, and I'm wireless. I'm an alpha-male on beta-blockers. I'm a non-believer, I'm an over-achiever; Laid-back and fashion-forward. Up-front, down-home; low-rent, high-maintenance. I'm super-sized, long-lasting, high-definition, fast-acting, oven-ready and built to last. A hands-on, footloose, knee-jerk head case; prematurely post-traumatic, and I have a love child who sends me hate-mail. But I'm

Dubai's Favorite Senators
merrie
by merrie  6-27-2008    1
Senator Maria Cantwell (D., Wash.) has been threatening to hold up appointments to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission until the CFTC increases regulation of oil trading. According to the Almanac of American Politics, "successfully worked the phones" in 2005 to round up enough colleagues to block drilling in the Alaskan wilderness. Her counterpart in the House is Michigan's Bart Stupak, who claims special credit for a permanent ban on drilling in the Great Lakes and has also cast votes against exploration in Alaska and off the California coast. Then there's New York Senator Chuck Schumer, another staunch opponent of new domestic oil supplies. Mr. Schumer has egged on the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting binge that has contributed so much to the oil price spike.

BY ANDY F. BRYAN...he continues: "Me thinks me have serious problem. Me thinks me addicted. But since when it acceptable to call addict monster? It affliction. It disease. It burden. But does it make me monster? How can they be so callous? Me know there something wrong with me, but who in Sesame Street doesn't suffer from mental disease or psychological disorder? They don't call the vampire with math fetish monster, and me pretty sure he undead and drinks blood. No one calls Grover monster, despite frequent delusional episodes and obsessive-compulsive tendencies. And the obnoxious red Grover—oh, what his name?—Elmo! Yes, Elmo live all day in imaginary world and no one call him monster. No, they think he cute. And Big Bird! Don't get me started on Big Bird! He unnaturally gigantic talking canary! How is that not monster? Snuffleupagus not supposed to exist—woolly mammoths extinct. His very existence monstrous. Me least like monster. Me maybe have unhealthy obsession, but me no monst

People Unloading Prized Belongings to Make Ends Meet
egsnyder
by egsnyder  5-5-2008
"Struggling with mounting debt and rising prices, faced with the toughest economic times since the early 1990s, Americans are selling prized possessions online and at flea markets at alarming rates. To meet higher gas, food and prescription drug bills, they are selling off grandmother's dishes and their own belongings. Some of the household purging has been extremely painful - families forced to part with heirlooms. "This is not about downsizing. It's about needing gas money," said Nancy Baughman, founder of eBizAuctions, an online auction service she runs out of her garage in Raleigh, N.C. One former affluent customer is now unemployed and had to unload Hermes leather jackets and Versace jeans and silk shirts."

Consumer Addiction and Unhappiness
abailart
by abailart  4-11-2008    4
<<<Sally Erickson reminds us, the patterns of behavior endemic to consumer society are so much more dangerous than substance abuse, because they are perpetuating a culture that is literally eating itself out of house and home. If addicts define insanity as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results, this may be the clearest sign yet that consumerism is driving us all crazy.>>>
