In Women's Studies courses, co-eds learn to be feminist "change agents" and harass professors who step out of line. Women's Studies originated in the training schools of the US Communist Party in the 1940's. The Rockefeller Foundation sponsors Women's Studies. If you Google "Rockefeller Foundation" and "Women's Studies," you will get 128,000 entries.

Not enough consumers in Japan? Pay parents to make more...
egoldstein
by egoldstein  9-5-2009    1
Seems that the Japanese government is seriously considering paying parents to have babies as a way to stimulate their economy over the long run. Though this seems a bit odd, I suppose an economy can't flourish if it is disproportionately old...and this is one way to rebalance things.

Texas: The state of sex (mis)education
ratilfar
by ratilfar  2-27-2009    4
Suicide, death, murder? These programs gotta be pretty good at scaring teens out of having sex, right? Mmm, not exactly. Texan teens "rate well above national averages on virtually every published statistic involving sexual risk-taking behaviors," according to the report, and the state has the third-highest teen birthrate in the country.

Japanese Youth Embracing Diversity
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  1-20-2008
More: Japanese Brazilians in Oizumi complain about being called gaijin, or "outsiders," and treated as such. When they run into Japanese colleagues, some Brazilians complain, the Japanese pretend not to recognize them But a growing number of Japanese – mostly youths, such as Tanaka – are trying to persuade compatriots to embrace ethnic minorities. Unlike in previous generations, young adults tend to be more welcoming of diversity. Some analysts argue that, in a country with a dwindling birthrate – 1.32 as of 2006, down from 1.66 two decades ago – and a rapidly aging population, Japan should roll out the red carpet for foreigners In Oizumi, young Japanese are teaming up with Brazilians, cracking barriers among communities. Tanaka formed a group named Kimobig ("daring") to energize exchanges such as language classes between Japanese and Brazilians more locals have gotten acquainted with Brazilian residents. Urbanites have been entranced by Brazilian music, dance, and food

Riley Says "Apparently Old People Aren’t Dying To Use Eons"
Amanda Mooney
by Amanda Mooney  9-13-2007
One comment on this story was... # Starfeeder September 13th, 2007 at 2:22 am "I can’t believe they even made a social networking site for people over 50…" Eons really took charge and stepped out on a limb to develop a Web 2.0 space for the 50+ set. Despite its current restructuring or site issues, what cannot be forgotten is that Jeff Taylor and the Eons team (along with a host of other Boomer 2.0 site developers) are laying important groundwork for current and future 50+ generations looking to connect online. As we watch new ventures in the 2.0 space develop, we should take care not to discourage innovators from stepping out to develop platforms that go beyond MySpace and Facebook me-toos just because they take longer to attract a large following to rival the big players in the space.

Haaretz: "Very Deep RACIST Norms, Cloaked in various ways"
righthand
by righthand  8-11-2007
If we have indeed reached "the end of Zionism," it is not because of demography but because of geography and morality. There is no "demographic threat." There is a threat to society's values, which will be determined not by statistics but by the amount of social justice. Talk of a demographic threat is not legitimate. Imagine what would happen if a discussion were held in the US or EU on "the worrisome natural growth of the Jews." And who here would dare consider publicly the "fertility tendencies" of the Mizrahim - Jews of Middle Eastern descent. The racist discourse has become the norm in Israel and the Jewish world at large. It began with the "danger of assimilation" and "mixed marriages" - a supremely racist term - continued with the "danger of Haredization" and ended with the "peril of the Arab majority." Demographers constantly publish forecasts, competing among themselves for the title of chief doomsayer. A putrid stench emanates from the talk about "fertility tendencies,

Child-Watching Gadgets Gain Foothold In Japan
Sorgalim
by Sorgalim  2-11-2007    2
Is interesting that if the little one is running late, a parent can either call the Coco-Secom operation center or send an e-mail to trace the child. Within 30 to 40 seconds, a subscriber will get a map marking the location of the child. For an additional cost of $82 per request, security guards can be dispatched to the location to retrieve the child. So far, the Coco-Secom service has attracted 135,000 subscribers.
