Beginning of the End of Free Market Health Care in the U.S.
Rustee
by Rustee  Yesterday 11:23 PM    2
Commercial insurers—who were still required to pay taxes, establish reserves, and adhere to other state insurance regulations—had difficulty competing with the Blues, which, by the 1950s, together were the largest provider of health insurance in America. In an effort to compete with the Blues, more and more for-profit insurance companies offered similar plans, and the model of third-party insurance plans paying the providers directly with little or no input from the patient—and paying for routine care through insurance—became entrenched. This new model was a disaster in the making. In addition to minimizing incentives for insured customers to comparison shop for medical services, it also minimized incentives for doctors and hospitals to compete on price.

Learn from Obama's Victory: The Nation, Bangkok, Thailand
zizzy
by zizzy  11-5-2008
John McCain, Obama's Republican opponent, promptly congratulated the winner, vowed to help him and told his supporters to accept the outcome. Obama thanked and praised McCain for his spirit. Political opponents in Thailand, on the other hand, attack each other any way they can. Conditions must be laid down just to start a political dialogue. Obama credited his success to donors who supported him no matter how much or little money they could give. His singling out for praise of a 106-year-old woman who made a great effort to vote could also make Thailand's genuine advocates of democracy envious of the Americans' participation.

West Coast Polls Just Closed: Obama Projected Winner !
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-4-2008
Two minutes ago CNN projected Obama will be the 44th President of the United States of America. Virgina, also, capital of the Confederacy during the USA Civil War, becomes the first state in the Old South to go Democratic. Obama had to "flip a red state blue," to be assured of winning - Virginia was the state where that happen. Florida was next. Victory was then certain. But when California reported it's results.. it was over. Obama had won; Obama was over the 270 amount of votes he needed. Um...People at Obama's huge rally in Chicago are going wild in joy and celebration. McCain comes out 20 minutes after the West Coast polls close and conceded defeat and congratulated Obama -- and urged all his supporters to offer him - the new President -- good will and good effort; and that it's time to move beyond disappointment and work together. It's cool. It's really great. An incredible triumph in American history. A dark past has been firmly left behind. We hope that t

My Vote For President!
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-4-2008    3
Healthcare: Free healthcare for everyone! With the doctors we have left, we will need to make sure that we keep as many people alive as possible. Abortion: Not really an option since we lost 2/3 of the world's population. National Security: How about international security. We need to protect our world from any future invasion. There won't be another alien attack under Whitmore's watch. Education: It looks like education is free too. We need all the smart people we can get. Due do the disaster we only have a few college campuses to choose from. We want a President who doesn't believe in red or blue states, but one who believes that we should spend every single dollar on a pending alien attack. He should be a single dad who's sort of kind of looking for a woman. These are the things I need to see in my candidate. :p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag44dRO8LEA

Moderate Democrats Own This Election
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2008    1
Huge numbers of these Democrats reside in battleground states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida. It is among these disaffected Democrats that John McCain has gained traction. Like them, he is a moderate. He offers a shred of encouragement because he has been a maverick who has not always towed the Republican party line. He has the wisdom of experience and decades of demonstrated as well as heroic service to his country. In other words, he has appeal with moderate Dems. Thus the value of Joe Liberman to his cause, in case you were wondering why Joe spoke at the Republican convention. Liberman is a true blue Democrat. All of which brings up the subject of the high percentage of undecided voters in most all of the national polls with less than 48 hours to go to election day. What is up with that? How can so many voters remain undecided so late in what has been the longest presidential race in history?

Obama margins up in state polls, off a hair in national
masbury
by masbury  10-29-2008
Since it's a state-by-state election, state polls are probably more accurate. If, for instance, McCain is winning 75% of all the popular vote in, say, Texas, he'd still only get the electoral votes that he would have gotten had he won with 51%. The high popular vote number will affect national polls, but inaccurately, in terms of who's winning the election. Nevada, btw, has moved from toss-up to leaning blue - and in this summary, that means ahead by more than four points.

Questions are on: Economy, Iraq, Health Care, Immigration and Hot Topic Social issues. Also, there is an interesting contest to guess how many electoral votes each of the candidates will get. Barrack's Wife: Michelle Obama Plays It Cool.
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-9-2008    1
These people, this campaign, is incredible. I have never seen nor could even have imagined such consistent brillance. The more common reaction would be to toss insults back at McCain and instead she talks about respecting them and how Obama is going to need them! One of Obama's clever message (and I believe it's also sincere) is how Democrats, Republicans and Independents have to work together (appealing to them all), and how there is no 'Red States,' of America, nor 'Blue States,' of America -- but the United States of America (appealing to us all). Even direct enemies are invited in and it is another (I believe sincere) brilliant thing: It disarms the 'enemy,' and is a core of his political philosophy: Work Together: Consensus This has actually worked to soften significant Catholic opposition (due to the abortion issue; most difficult). (/About 56% Catholic opposition would lose the election). How? -- Allow abortions (regrettably) but work to build families; do adapti

Sarah sad statement about 'Merika--Matt Taibbi
papananook
by papananook  10-4-2008    3
Sarah Palin is a symbol of everything that is wrong with the modern United States. As a representative of our political system, she's a new low in reptilian villainy, the ultimate cynical masterwork of puppeteers like Karl Rove. But more than that, she is a horrifying symbol of how little we ask for in return for the total surrender of our political power. Not only is Sarah Palin a fraud, she's the tawdriest, most half-assed fraud imaginable, 20 floors below the lowest common denominator, a character too dumb even for daytime TV -and this country is going to eat her up, cheering her every step of the way. All because most Americans no longer have the energy to do anything but lie back and allow ourselves to be jacked off by the calculating thieves who run this grasping consumer paradise we call a nation.

Daniel Boone (1734-1820)
pokkets
by pokkets  9-26-2008    1
the following says something we all know is true. While His status is Legendary, He was as are all of us Human. Something he would have been glad to admit. He had the same humanity as we all do, and beside the victories there were defeats as will be the course, but. He was prepared to venture into the unknown. and what he found can now be taken for granted, but it should Never be that way. Boone remains an iconic, if imperfectly remembered, figure in American history. He was a legend in his own lifetime, especially after an account of his adventures was published in 1784, making him famous in America and Europe. After his death, he was frequently the subject of tall tales and works of fiction. His adventures—real and legendary—were influential in creating the archetypal Western hero of American folklore. In American popular culture, he is remembered as one of the foremost early frontiersmen, even though the mythology often overshadows the historical details of his life.

Shipping Containers Converted into Homes for Urban Poor
urbanlife
by urbanlife  9-25-2008    4
"Finally, a home of our own" - the foundation of PFNC, whose goal is to provide housing to those who most desperately need it around the globe. PFNC utilizes surplus shipping containers resulting from the United States' consistent trade deficit. The containers serve as the building block of PFNC housing, after an extensive conversion process to make them a home. They designed a galley-style kitchen with a stove, sink, refrigerator and dinette, and a 48 sq. ft. bathroom with a pedestal sink, shower and commode, a bunk area for children; separate sleeping quarters for the owners. A half million people could benefit from such homes in Juarez, Mexico alone. Affordable for the average worker at manufacturing plants in Mexico along the U.S. border...instead of a cardboard shack, a real home, offered as a employee benefit in "a work to own" housing program. PFNC doesn't intend just to build shelter: it wants to build communities.

Students Protest FOR flag - Educrats Die of Embarassment
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  9-23-2008    4
Students on campus started a campaign to wear as much red, white or blue clothing and carry as many flags as possible Thursday in protest of Tuesday's decision, despite the apology. Jake Shelly wore the same shirt he wore Tuesday and was not disciplined. "I am glad so many people are supporting this and wearing red, white and blue," his sister said. She believes the swift change in rules was because of the overwhelming student action. A.J. Galindo is one student who wore a patriotic shirt to school. Galindo's shirt honored Marine Cpl. Joshua Pickard, a family member who died in Iraq in 2006. Pickard's two brothers remain active in the Marines. "I think it is horrible that you can't wear an American flag to school without something like this happening," he said, referring to the flurry of activities during the school's lunch hour. "We have people fighting for our country and dying every day, but we can't wear an American flag at a public school?"

Barack Obama: Leap of Faith
merrie
by merrie  8-28-2008    1
but because they're confused about the roots of his politics. Sen. Obama accumulated his victorious lead early with a liberal coalition willing to vote for him mainly for reasons of faith – upper-middle-class whites, black voters and young idealists -- all attempting to complete the civil-rights promise, answer the post-partisan appeal, or vote against the war and George Bush. His coalition's limitations hit the wall in Ohio. Here Sen. Clinton discovered her Rosie-the-Riveter persona, and it worked. I watched her sell bread-and-butter policy before blue-collar crowds in Youngstown, Akron and Cleveland. She was tremendously good at it. He just wasn't. The Sunday before the Ohio vote, Sen. Obama abandoned Ohio. The way Hillary won in these crucial November swing states may have fatally damaged his candidacy. His problem is that there is nothing in it (biography) to suggest he has spent any significant time thinking about these people other than as a political abstraction.
