Some Odd Facts from the Animal World
Stumblerz
by Stumblerz  11-12-2009
Which animal grows the maximum from birth to adulthood? Though a male kangaroo can be about 7 ft. tall and weigh 90 kg, at birth they are about 2 cm tall and weigh a few grams only! After birth, the baby has to climb about 6 inches along the furs of its mother’s abdomen to reach the edge of the pouch and enter into it. It is equivalent to a human baby climbing about 10 ft.! The infant kangaroo is suckled inside its mother’s pouch, where it completes its development to emerge when it weighs more than a kg.

Major Abu Nidal remains in under armed guard and in a coma amid the FBI probe into the killing of 13 and the wounding of 31 at the US army base. On Sunday an ashen-faced and paranoid-looking ex-President Bush toured the camp, muttering incoherently and barking orders as if he was still in charge. General Colon Bowel is on a phishing trip somewhere near the Azores.

According to Herodotus (484-425 B.C.), Cambyses, the son of Cyrus the Great, sent 50,000 soldiers from Thebes to attack the Oasis of Siwa and destroy the oracle at the Temple of Amun after the priests there refused to legitimize his claim to Egypt. After walking for seven days in the desert, the army got to an "oasis," which historians believe was El-Kharga. After they left, they were never seen again. "A wind arose from the south, strong and deadly, bringing with it vast columns of whirling sand, whi

Hungary's 'forgotten' war victims
sahara
by sahara  11-7-2009
Back in his living-room, Arpad's three-year-old granddaughter, Jofie, brings me wooden elephants and antelopes to admire and stands quietly listening to our conversation. On the table, Arpad has arranged photographs that he took on his trips east in search of the lost Hungarians. "Maybe that one is your dad," Jofie tells him, wanting so much to be helpful and pointing to a group of men who are holding a cross on a small hill in the city of Baltsi. "That hill," says Arpad, "is made of human bones."

Our acupuncturist pronounces it "Zen Goo Shway". Similar to Ben-gay and other topical liniments, Team LexiMonkey always keeps a couple of bottles of this stuff on hand. our local Vietnamese grocery carries it, Excellent for aches and pains and bruises. There are stories of fighters breaking an arm, soaking the arm in ZGS, taping it up, and going on to win the match. Our acupuncturist discounts the literal interpretation of that story, but this is really great stuff.

I live without cash - and I manage just fine.
mrobert
by mrobert  10-28-2009
I understand his point of view - but there have to be better solutions. We can't all just go into hibernation. And of course, detractors of this plan will say that the caravan and laptop etc. wouldn't be there for him if we were all sitting in his position - who would manufacture them and how? He is very right about the disconnect between creation and purchase of products though - and contaminating the environment. All other animals on this planet understand that the environment is their only connection to life on this planet..... there must a solution for human beings too.

Displays of the Dead
sahara
by sahara  10-28-2009
Some of these sites result from a phenomenon that has naturally (or supernaturally?) mummified the dead, while others consist of artful arrangements of bones and skulls done by a creative monk in his spare time. In addition to such collections of human remains, many saints whose bodies have been miraculously preserved are on display in churches. (There's also a Buddhist example of the miracle in Siberia.) Such displays of the dead certainly appeal to travelers with a taste towards the macabre, but they can also provide reflective travelers with a powerful reminder of the impermanence of life. Whatever your reason for checking out the dead on display, the sites below are widely recognized as among the best in the world. Also listed are individual preserved bodies of saints and other famous figures. More info here: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/02/sicily-crypts/gill-text

Amelia Earhart's Final Resting Place Believed Found
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-23-2009    10
According to Gillespie, who is set to embark on a new $500,000 Nikumaroro expedition next summer, the two became castaways and eventually died there. "We know that in 1940 British Colonial Service officer Gerald Gallagher recovered a partial skeleton of a castaway on Nikumaroro. Unfortunately, those bones have now been lost," Gillespie said. The archival record by Gallagher suggests that the bones were found in a remote area of the island, in a place that was unlikely to have been seen during an aerial search. A woman's shoe, an empty bottle and a sextant box whose serial numbers are consistent with a type known to have been carried by Noonan were all found near the site where the bones were discovered. "The reason why they found a partial skeleton is that many of the bones had been carried off by giant coconut crabs. There is a remote chance that some of the bones might still survive deep in crab burrows," Gillespie said.
