POPSForget black holes, could the LHC trigger a “Bose supernova”? Nobody is exactly sure how these explosions proceed which is a tad worrying for the following reason: some clever clogs has pointed out that superfluid helium is a BEC and that the LHC is swimming in 700,000 litres of the stuff. Not only that but the entire thing is bathed in some of the most powerful magnetic fields on the planet. If not for anything else, the LHC has become a modern doom spelling myth. The universe is about to punish us for prying on its privacy... These modern myths are truly fascinating. After Bose Nova? Bose Supernova! :-)

POPSCloud-seeding ships could combat climate change The 300-tonne unmanned ships used to seed the clouds would be powered by the wind, but would not use conventional sails. Instead they would be fitted with a number of 20 m-high, 2.5 m-diameter cylinders known as “Flettner rotors” that would be made to spin continuously. This spinning would generate a force perpendicular to the wind direction, propelling the ship forward if it is oriented at right angles to the wind. around 1500 ships would be needed altogether to counteract a carbon doubling, at a cost of some £1m to £2m each. This would involve an initial fleet expanding by some 50 ships a year if the scheme is to keep in step with the current rate of increase in atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels.

POPSBartering sex for stuff or services Cont... Ben Corbett, a 39-year-old contractor from Boulder, Colorado, credits his tool belt with prompting the barrage of come-ons he fields from female clients -- most of them married -- on a regular basis. "It starts with the flirting, and it just progresses," says Corbett, who has run a construction and remodeling business for 20 years. "They'll touch my hand, and there's all this physical contact. Or they'll run around in their pajamas." "Once," he says, "I was painting the hallway right outside a client's bedroom, and she was lying on her bed like a girl at a slumber party with her legs up and her arms crossed and her head resting on them, asking me if I had a girlfriend.

POPSStupidity is Repeating Same Actions Expecting Diff Results Cont: The problem is that this graph does not appear to be correct. Other data sources show Arctic ice having made a nice recovery this summer. NASA Marshall Space Flight Center data shows 2008 ice nearly identical to 2002, 2005 and 2006. Maps of Arctic ice extent are readily available from several sources, including the University of Illinois, which keeps a daily archive for the last 30 years. Ever notice that the same people who are constantly wrong about global warming are also the ones that push for socialism cause "it'll work this time, you'll see"

POPS2008 Optibikes The technology finally caught up with our dreams. The plus side of our declining economy is that we are now faced with making smart choices. A robust economy lines the pockets of those who know how to sell to those who only spend. With the dollar stretch shrinking the buyers are having to look at their spending like never before. The declining economy is making everyone take a second look. It has stimulated conversation among those for too long mute. The questions being raised are, "What have I been doing? How the hell did we get here? Did I really contribute to this situation? What can I do now to better this place I share with so many who have even less? Bicycling is only one option of so many already out there. More ideas are needed but for those lacking in creativity all needs being done is to look for the solutions already in place and then take action. Being smart is fun. It can also save you money and clean up the environment so you can continue to enjoy it.
