POPSMedicine - Religion Clash The argument that Jewish law doesn't recognize brain death seems particularly strange to me. Perhaps a knowledgeable Jewish scholar can come to the rescue and explain to me what law this is and from where it's derived?

POPSDo we get wiser with age? "Is age a prerequisite for wisdom, though? We all know a few elderly people who lack wisdom, while we may know few young people that have wisdom in spades. People certainly aren't always at peak brainpower in old age; after all, when wrinkles begin appearing on the face, it usually means that wrinkles have started disappearing on the brain. The brain shrinks slightly with age, and aging leads to a normal decline in cognitive function that may eventually bloom into dementias such as Alzheimer's disease".

POPSObjectivity is a Fallacy That "take him out" - that wouldn't be some kind of physical harm he was fantasizing about would it? Kill him? No, just injure him in some way that would incapacitate him for a year or so. Massive Brain Injury just short of death seems to be implied. Not that the "progressives" are angry or threatening physical injury or anything.

POPSCan human consciousness survive without a brain? "Why do you think there is such resistance to studies like yours? Because we're pushing through the boundaries of science, working against assumptions and perceptions that have been fixed. A lot of people hold this idea that, well, when you die, you die; that's it. Death is a moment — you know you're either dead or alive. All these things are not scientifically valid, but they're social perceptions. How is technology challenging the perception that death is a moment?"

POPSIs It Possible To Have An 'Out-of-Body' Experience? "Death is not a specific moment," he says. "It is a process..." "... a period of time, which may last from a few seconds to an hour or more, in which medical efforts may succeed in restarting the heart and reversing the dying process. What people experience during this period provides a unique window into what we are all likely to experience during the dying process." Clip Song

POPSTemporary Erectile Dysfunction Erectile dysfunction is often characterized as psychological if erection is possible sometimes. For instance, are you able to get an erection during your sleep? Are you unable to perform on some nights only? Thankfully the problem is both temporary and easy to fix, if action of some sort is taken. No need for surgery or other risky measures. It may be as simple as making sure you get a good night's sleep, a physiological and fairly common cause of ED. Men think that they should be able to perform all the time, at all times. It's just not possible. In this case it's your body's way of telling you to sleep and don't over exert yourself - to conserve your energy.

POPSMan Dead, Large Amount Of Possible Cyanide Found "Our Joint Terrorism Task Force is involved in this simply because the victim here is from another country and it just kind of makes sense that our terrorism guys would take a look a look at this," FBI Special Agent in Charge James Davis said. Cyanide can be made from plants in very small amounts. It can be a gas, liquid or powder. It prevents the body from using oxygen and therefore is more harmful to the heart and brain than other organs. "It was used in concentration camps in World War II and by Saddam Hussein against the Kurds in the 1990s." Officials said cyanide can be used as a terrorist weapon if it is dumped in water put in food, sprayed as a gas, or many other methods. The investigation is continuing.

POPSSingularity by 2045 - incredible life in a tamed world Other possible advancements from 2050 to 2100 could include colonies on Moon, Mars and beyond, finding and harnessing wormholes that break “light speed” barriers in extraterrestrial travel, and whisking information through time to meet ourselves at an earlier age, or go forward and see what the future has in store for us. It may even become possible to gather scanned minds from lost loved ones before their death enabling them to continue living in our time. How wild would that be?

POPSDrug tries to offset 10,000 years of evolution Gene therapies, expected some time between 2015 and 2020, promise to correct this genetic problem caused by nature, but many obese people do not want to wait. They are hoping that Nastech’s new nasal spray can provide a solution now. Within 20 to 35 minutes after taking a whiff, this new drug moves quickly through the nasal lining and into the bloodstream, sending a message to the brain that our tummy is full. So far the drug has had no negative side effects. PYY is undergoing clinical trials now, and is expected to be in drug stores by 2009 or 2010. Obesity is the 2nd leading cause of preventable death in America, so this drug offers a great chance for more people to improve their health and get ready to enjoy our “magical future”.
