Do we get wiser with age?
einbar
by einbar  11-5-2008    12
"Is age a prerequisite for wisdom, though? We all know a few elderly people who lack wisdom, while we may know few young people that have wisdom in spades. People certainly aren't always at peak brainpower in old age; after all, when wrinkles begin appearing on the face, it usually means that wrinkles have started disappearing on the brain. The brain shrinks slightly with age, and aging leads to a normal decline in cognitive function that may eventually bloom into dementias such as Alzheimer's disease".

Older Brain Really May Be a Wiser Brain
Lexica
by Lexica  6-27-2008
The prospect of getting older doesn't look nearly as bleak, now that we're finding that exercise helps keep people strong and boosts balancing ability, and that mental decline is not an inevitable part of aging. And a good thing, too. As my mother used to say, "You don't like getting older? Consider the alternative!"

Older Brain May Be Wiser
debbyski
by debbyski  5-21-2008    15
“For the young people, it’s as if the distraction never happened,” said an author of the review, Lynn Hasher, a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and a senior scientist at the Rotman Research Institute. “But for older adults, because they’ve retained all this extra data, they’re now suddenly the better problem solvers. They can transfer the information they’ve soaked up from one situation to another.”

Sugary breakfast cereals may boost memory.
pokkets
by pokkets  7-2-2007    1
The kids have short term, memory improvement, but it doesn't take long for the glucose to burn out and leave them empty. They also need a memory for the last few hours of school. Low GI are slow release, and can maintain the memory for much longer, though maybe without the acute rush. What can be as important are the artificial colours, flavouring, and preservatives that can play havoc with a child's metabolism. Substantial breakfasts are needed, because it is amazing how many kids either throw prepare lunches away if they don't like them, or use them to trade up. They learn about trade not nutrition.Once children are introduced to sugar they won't be happy with anything else. A sugar rush to a child, is like a shot of adrenaline to an adult
