Obama's Disdain for Constitution
merrie
by merrie  10-27-2009    4
That's why they are "so-called Founders" to him. Here is Thomas Jefferson's first inaugural address, March 4th, 1801: "A wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government." Thomas Jefferson, "so-called Founder." Thomas Jefferson: "Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated." So-called Founder. John Adams, A Defense of the Constitutions of Governments of the United States of America, 1787: "The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the law of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence."

Blaming the Poor
Socratoad
by Socratoad  10-21-2009    1
A paper published yesterday in the journal Environment and Urbanization shows that the places where population has been growing fastest are those in which carbon dioxide has been growing most slowly, and vice versa. Between 1980 and 2005, for instance, sub-Saharan Africa produced 18.5% of the world's population growth and just 2.4% of the growth in CO2. North America turned out only 4% of the extra people, but 14% of the extra emissions. Sixty-three percent of the world's population growth happened in places with very low emissions. Even this does not capture it. The paper points out that about one sixth of the world's population is so poor that it produces no significant emissions at all. This is also the group whose growth rate is likely to be highest. Households in India earning less than 3,000 rupees (£40) a month use a fifth of the electricity per head and one seventh of the transport fuel of households earning 30,000 rupees or more. Street sleepers use almost nothing. Those wh

Horse Soldiers Rode Into War Against The Taliban
merrie
by merrie  5-25-2009    3
and commanding general of the U.S. Army Special Forces Command (Airborne), 2001-2003 "Not just an epic war story, Horse Soldiers is a beautifully written, intimate portrait of the men and women who lived the battle on the fields of fire -- and at home, too. Their secret mission against the Taliban was intelligent, brave, and undertaken with great care for the good people of Afghanistan. Doug Stanton's superb account is an invaluable insight for policy makers and the public for years to come." -- Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea "In the spirit of Black Hawk Down and Flags of Our Fathers, Doug Stanton plunges into the heart of a single mission and returns with a stark understanding not only of what happened but what was truly at stake. Through precise reportage and hauntingly rendered battle scenes, Stanton shows that we may ignore this 'forgotten' theater only at our own peril." -- Hampton Sides, author of Ghost Soldiers and Blood and Thunder

History: Two Americans, both Presidents, Abroad. One Great Speech!
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  2-6-2009    1
Ireland has already set an example and a standard for other small nations to follow. This has never been a rich or powerful country, and yet, since earliest times, its influence on the world has been rich and powerful. No larger nation did more to keep Christianity and Western culture alive in their darkest centuries. No larger nation did more to spark the cause of independence in America, indeed, around the world. And no larger nation has ever provided the world with more literary and artistic genius. This is an extraordinary country. George Bernard Shaw, speaking as an Irishman, summed up an approach to life: Other people, he said "see things and...say 'Why?' ...But I dream things that never were -- and I say: 'Why not?'" It is that quality of the Irish -- that remarkable combination of hope, confidence and imagination -- that is needed more than ever today. The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by sceptics or cynics, whose horizons are limited by the obvious real

Tungsten Carbide Ring
cmwebmetro
by cmwebmetro  11-10-2008
I recently bought my husband a tungsten carbide ring for his birthday. It is so gorgeous and looks so good on him! He really likes it too!!! It is so scratch resistant, that he can even wear it to work without having to worry about messing it up. The ring did not cost too much, I guess tungsten carbide costs a lot less than other metals like titanium, platinum, gold, and silver, so I did not pay a fortune on his gift. =)

AFP: World hails Obama's 'brilliant' victory
walski69
by walski69  11-5-2008
A victory for the American people, and definitely something to celebrate the world over. The article has quotes from various world leaders, just about all looking forward to a new era in American governance. A very interesting bit from the end: 'In Obama, an ancient fishing town on the Sea of Japan -- Obama means small shore in Japanese -- residents dressed in Hawaiian skirts did a hula dance in celebration, embracing Hawaiian-born Obama as one of their own. "I'm so excited because Obama shares our town's name. But even if the town was called McCain I would still support Barack Obama," said 44-year-old dancer Masayo Ishibashi.'

Curvature of the Penis
dianakee
by dianakee  8-5-2008
The only known treatments of this condition are surgery, oral medication (vitamin E) or penis exercises. However, surgery is an invasive technique with irreversible results that is not always successful, while Vitamin E brings only a small improvement and not to all men. The best choice for anybody suffering from this condition is to try penis exercises that can straighten the penis, just as they can make it longer. Curvature of the penis can be caused by other factors such as strenuous masturbation, or injury to the penis, but the exercises used to correct Peyronie's disease can be equally effective in treating curvature caused by other factors.

And why did they do this? "Only one of the five War Council lawyers remains in office: David Addington, the brilliant but abrasive longtime legal adviser and now chief of staff to Cheney. His primary motive, according to several former administration and defense officials, was to push for an expansion of presidential power that Congress or the courts couldn't check."

indonesia`s Orangutan orphans at school
syncopath
by syncopath  11-14-2007
from that article: "At the beginning of the 20th century, while Indonesian human population was increasing from around 10 million to over 200 million, the orangutan population was dwindling by more than 90%. Today, Indonesian and Malaysian orangutans are only 65.000 and, either they are men or monkeys, they need to be saved. Many factors are actually threatening their survival: first, the loss of their natural habitat and the fragmentation of the forests; second, the spread of diseases; third, the increased hunting of orangutans for meat, babies, skulls or penises."
