POPSNanomaterial cleans up flourescent bulbs Household energy saving bulbs are a concern because of the mercury they contain, and the number that are starting to be used today, but another example was the long fluorescent bulbs, which may not burn out or break too often, but are often shipped in bulk to recyclers after a renovation, or demolition. The compact fluorescent bulb use less mercury than incandescent bulbs running on electricity from coal, which releases mercury when burned. The mercury from the CFL bulbs can be recovered.

POPSDigging Ourselves a Black Hole Whatever your concerns, it is important, in these dark moments, to remember that other people have been having a worse summer than you. To name just a few: John Edwards, the mayor of Detroit and all the people involved in the making of “The Love Guru.” Perspective is all. If you’re going to fret, I say, fret about that black hole. For one thing, it makes it much easier to schedule unpleasant tasks for the second half of September. Heads, the planet survives. Tails, the root canal never happens. The vast majority of the scientific community believes that the Large Hadron will not lead to the destruction of all life as we know it. Or at least as Greg Landsberg, a physicist from Brown University, was quoted as saying, the chances are “totally minuscule.”

POPSMcCain Team Shoves William Ayers Cover-up Into The Spotlight Some highlights: While the University sits on the complete Annenberg Challenge records, several months ago I was able to obtain certain key records of the Challenge - including board minutes, annual and semi-annual reports and financial records - from Brown University's Annenberg Institute. Brown housed the national Annenberg Challenge program that was set up in 1993 by a gift of $500 million from Walter Annenberg. While the material I was provided is helpful it is no substitute for the complete documentary record that is apparently housed at the University of Illinois and thus that public University should immediately make available to the public those records. Below is an analysis of what I found in the documents I was able to obtain.

POPSPelosi confronted at book signing Madam Speaker was so flustered by our efforts that she barely made a cogent remark for her whole "Know Your Power" talk. Our peaceful action had impact. The truth is a powerful tool. But if only our actions weren't necessary. If only, as Jodie Evans suggested, Madam Speaker would do her job! Saddest of all is the contrast of who Pelosi once was to who she his now. For a woman who was once at the cutting edge of social progressivism, Nancy Pelosi has lost her way. She has strayed from her former social consciousness into the malaise of power. A sorry state for a woman who 32 years ago was a pivotal player in the 1976 Presidential campaign of radically progressive California Governor, Jerry Brown.

POPSUntouched forests are carbon warriors. The trouble with plantation forests is that there is more to a forest than trees. The trouble with the trees in the untouched forests, is that their wood is becoming so expensive. There's so much less of it. One of the biggest 'justifications' for cutting down old growth forests is that it provides jobs a few hundred or illegal logging because cutting down a few trees beats working in the field all year. We don't know how to rebuild an eco-system, and we're throwing away the templates.

POPSOrion twins show not all are identical The fact that the twins are different means the study of their eclipses, can shed more light on the formation of stars, and they are one of the yardsticks astronomers can use to test their theories on star formation. The information gained can help revise some theories that exist at the moment, including the ages of star types.

POPSChristian Science Monitor on Reverend Wright - Did Obama's Pastor Preach Hate?
What people hear depends on their own experience and worldview, says Teresa Brown, who teaches the art of preaching at Emory U. in Atlanta. "I listen to 60 sermons a week by black and white pastors, you can find something in almost any one that is offensive to somebody." The key as to whether language is hate speech lies in a preacher's overall message, according to Martin Marty, of the University of Chicago Divinity School and renowned historian of religion. Dr. Marty, who has visited Trinity many times, says, "If Wright only had whites in his searchlight, you might call it . But he goes after the men in his church" about fatherhood, he puts himself and his people under the prophetic spotlight. "The black church took the distorted version of Christianity that provided the religious justification for slavery, carved out the racist elements ..and implanted new content that actually moved Christianity in this country closer to Jesus' message," says Dr. Braxton.
