POPSCertify Congo Tin? Lydia Polgreen's story on a Congolese mine is a fantastic piece of reporting that deserves to be read in its entirety. Towards the end she raises an interesting question: U.S. politicians have suggested certifying the source of minerals from Congo, in an effort to avoid funding conflicts. I'm not totally sold on such labeling programs -- diamond-certifying schemes have been another popular one. Money being money, won't military groups cut off from one resource just move on to another? Are there strong examples of commodity certification schemes that have actually stopped a conflict? If so I'd love to hear about it.

POPSSenator Brownback: China Preparing Olympic Spy Attack “The Chinese government has demanded that these hotels allow the PSB to install software programs and hardware devices on the hotel networks,” Brownback said. “These measures are designed to assist the PSB to spy on the Internet activities of guests and record websites visited, searches entered and even keystrokes. The text alludes to harsh punishment for failure to comply with the order, including loss of license to operate a hotel in China.” The senator also provided a document that shows one hotel warning its guests that his Internet activity could be monitored. Brownback did not identify the hotel chains, citing concerns that they could be punished.

POPSPresident or Priest? How long do we have to be subjected to the parade of candidates trying to "out-god" each other? I agree that if they bring up religion it's fair game for questioning and criticism. I suspect this is the last thing they want and will try to hide behind the taboo of religious criticism.

POPS Romney Wins Online, Huckabee Wins Room Organizers said they wound up with more than 2,200 attendees, plus more than 400 journalists. Further complicating the voting totals, about 600 attendees voted online, so making it tougher to generalize about the discrepancies, organizers said.

POPSConservative Straw Poll--Giuliani Out; Romney, Huckabee, Paul Top
It also states in the article that "Romney's campaign actively petitioned supporters to vote online whether or not they had attended the conference." So that would be Romney "slamming the polls", not Ron Paul, wouldn't it? Note Ron Paul dashed both Giuliani and Fred Thompson. Note as well that "permanant tax reductions" and taxes are two of the leading values issues, as well as abortion opposition and defending marriage (something Presidents actually have little influence legally upon, more so the states). This shows that Ron Paul is a serious contender. It also shows with Huckabee that republican voters are dissatisfied with Giuliani. Too bad people are blind to Huckabees lack of constitutional integrity, or lack of a lower tax plan (Paul would eliminate the Income Tax entirely!), and fail to see that unjust war (the neocon's Iraq, Iran, Syria plan) is also murder, moreso than abortion! This shows the ignorance and biblical illiteracy of "values voters'" judgment.

POPSMore Draft Katherine Harris Fun! Hard to say what to think about this clip. Is it comedy or a horror film. I believe the latter is more true. Especially if they were to get into office.

POPSAnother Flat Earther Quits the Race For GOP Nomination Brownback's yellow brick road fell short of the White House and the World breathes a sigh of relief. One less Bigoted Jerk in the race but there are still plenty of Bigots running in the GOP Primary. Well, click your heels Dorothy you ain’t going to DC and hopefully the good people of Kansas will make sure you never get into the Governor’s Mansion in 2010. The only way a governor’s mansion would look good would be on top of you as your ruby slippers fell off your cloven hooves.

POPSObama Hype? I have no reason to challenge the grass roots support that Obama claims. Still, this would seem to suggest that there is a certain amount of hype in the "record" pace. I also see a big loophole here in all the campaign finance reform alarmism of recent years. Could I buy 10,000 Brownback for president t-shirts after already maximizing my legal donations for the cycle? Seems to demonstrate the silliness of such laws.
