I'm a big believer in freedom of religion. Basically, you either have freedom of religion or you have religious wars. That's why it's an U.S. idea that you can be Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, agnostic, atheist or anything. There can be good and bad in all; and all, even atheist, feel and understand there are 'natural laws,' that ALL cultures have -- like not killing people, stealing, etc. -- You don't need religion to tell you that. So, being Muslim is cool. I'm getting to like their music and Arab woman trilling. And if we want to "change," other people's religions then that should only be done by example - not force. Having said all that, if you get woman out of burkas you can discover many interesting things as well as great contributions to society can be made by them. Freedom produces great boons to mankind. Great energy. Great achievements. Slavery keeps all that in chains. Plus, freedom is a lot more fun.

Fight for Human Rights Continues in Burma
spirithiker
by spirithiker  11-1-2008    4
This monk has dedicated his life to attaining something we in America take for granted: Democracy and basic human rights. The U.S. claims to be a stalwart of human rights and yet allows human rights atrocities to continue in Burma, Zimbabwe, Tibet, etc. and even writes its laws to allow a U.S.-based corporation to profit from it. Chevron, based in California, has been making huge profits in Burma as part owner of a natural gas project. U.S. sanctions prevent most U.S. companies from working in Burma, but Chevron's investment there existed before the sanctions were imposed and continues under a grandfather clause. This man, and many others, is willing to die to gain freedom for his fellow countrymen. Chevron and the U.S. is willing to let him die at the hands of a tortuous dictatorial regime in order to make a profit. How is this any different than the terrorism the U.S. is creating in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Oct 13, 2008: Columbus Day
egsnyder
by egsnyder  10-13-2008
Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many countries in Latin America, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in The Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) and National Day in Spain, and as Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela.

Jewish Holiday Holds Up Congress During Financial Crisis
blueridge
by blueridge  10-1-2008    1
Why? Isn't this an "establishment of religion"? This gives some historical background. Apparently this is something fairly new! Is Judaism America's official religion? They have no trouble calling sessions on Sundays. They certainly don't observe any Islamic holidays, or Buddhist holidays, or ....etc.., not that they should. (Christmas used to not be observed by Congress, and is actually a pagan holiday that was "Christianized" by Constantine to unite the Roman Empire). Where is the ACLU on this one? Yom Kippur will be in October as well. It's fair to ask and question the constitutionality of this as it smacks of official endorsement. Methinks AIPAC holds this over Congress who are afraid to resist. As Orwell said, "some are more equal than others" (Animal Farm). The Fed chairman Bernanke is Jewish , who ironically has been the very one stressing the urgency of Congress acting immediately.
