POPSBurmese Days Earlier this month censors forced the weekly Myanmar Times to skip an issue after it reported a 15,556 per cent increase in the cost of a satellite television licence. The price rise was seen as an attempt to limit access to foreign media. (DT)

POPSLatest on the fate of Burmese protesters Prosecutions of those detained in September's protests in Burma are beginning. The government says it plans to prosecute only those involved in violent protests; international observers say many thousands are still in detention or unaccounted for.

POPSBurmese army 'buying child soldiers' This, to me, is behaviour of the worst type. The army is needed basically to protect the creatures who run the country. The Un should take out rulers here and in Africa who use kidnapped children to fight their battles.

POPS The Time for a Free Burma is Now Meanwhile, the world watches--and waits. We know that Gen. Than Shwe and his deputies have the advantage of violent force. But Ms. Suu Kyi and other opposition leaders have moral legitimacy, the support of the Burmese people and the support of the world. The regime's position grows weaker by the day. The generals' choice is clear:

POPSNobel Peace Prize Al Gore-5/2 Burmese Sangha-5/1? Award Burmese Monks Nobel Peace Prize online petition http://www.petitiononline.com/nobel007/petition.html "What has Algore done for world peace? My "vote" goes for the Burmese Sangha" The dignified spirituality, the refusal of alms, the passive submission to torture and even death at the hands of a jackbooted military—those wily sangha are pulling every cheap stunt in the Peace Prize playbook. The smart money still says Gore will win, but what chance does a former vice president of the United States—one who, while more or less running environmental policy for President Clinton, yapped endlessly about the problem and sacrificed not a penny of political capital to help solve it—have against thousands of bald-headed guys waving empty bowls over their heads?

POPS Murdered Monks Bodies Dumped In Jungle
About 4,000 monks have been rounded up in the past week as the military government has tried to stamp out pro-democracy protests. The detained monks have been disrobed and shackled, according to sources quoted by BBC Radio's Burmese service. The reports follow claims from a former intelligence officer in Burma's ruling junta that thousands of protesters have been killed and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle. News of the jailings comes after a former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta revealed the true extent of killings to clamp down on protests. The most senior official to defect so far, Hla Win, said: "Many more people have been killed in recent days than you've heard about. The bodies can be counted in several thousand." Mr Win said he fled when he was ordered to take part in a massacre of holy men. His defection will raise a faint hope among tens of thousands of Burmese who have fled to villages along the Thai border.

POPSBURMA NOW: KILLINGS BEHIND THE SCENES Bamadwe - di hma : http://www.austinatlarge.org/Resist/001_A_005_tunn.mp3 These reports are filtering out and should not be taken lightly - evidence is emerging that those who are listed as missing are being killed without any record of their death - these people are then made "permanently missing" a terrifying attempt at erasing their lives, struggle and cause. I post this in part for burmese who may see it and click on the audio.

POPSPeaceful Monks killed and detained in Burma.... Gitmo style Where is the justice? When people march peacefully for democracy, how is it that the free world sits and watches and does nothing to help? The military (a few) have dominated the many with the help of whom? Why won't China do something (insert rhetorical question here).

POPSBurmese Monks: Brave and Peaceful Freedom Fighters We may never know the true number of murdered civilians, or the fate of many monks and others who have been abducted. We do know that, despite arrests, tear gas, the closing of monasteries and flying bullets, the protest continues, at least for now.

POPSko-htike still receiving info from besieged Myanmar residents The people who are providing information to this young man's website are putting their lives in danger....I will not be surprised when they start pinging the cell phones and rounding up these people. Most don't even seem to have been involved in peaceful demonstrations, yet just traveling on ordinary daily business through town. Call or email your Congressional delegation. They can make a resolution of condemnation of the Mynamar junta who replaced the civilian government, if they are not afraid of the strong Chinese military relationship with the Burmese military junta.

POPSDeath toll rises in Burma crackdown. There will be ongoing reports by the media, but the Junta have no mandate. The people do not need the military regime removed by outside intervention. There is talk of economic sanctions by China or intervention by a 'benevolent dictatorship' The Burmese need freedom in their own right on their own terms, for the sake of their own country. Of course I am looking as an outsider with with no intimate knowledge of the situation on the ground, but there are factors regarding oppression, and authority, which are common to people who are directed to behave in a way that contradicts conscience. Who supplies the Myanmar regime with weapons?
