This by itself should make it very tempting to reject by republicans. Yet the hypocrite McCain, as well as Obama, supports it, (and Bush would sign it), even though it will NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT EXACERBATE IT (according to economists who know), and put all Americans and the federal government on the hook for the about a TRillion Dollars in new debt, transferring bad debt from Wall Street to Main Street. Even more sickening about all this is that both McCain and Obama support this balderdash. It favors Obama as he wants more government spending and government control. This however flies in the face of what McCain has been saying that he will veto earmarks and pork barrel spending. THE HOUSE SHOULD REJECT THIS. CALL THEM!

Legislation in a remarkably secretive process concentrated in the hands of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and David Obey Passage of the bill is complicated by the question of how much further oil exploration to permit off the U.S. coast. Democrats are seeking to attach a plan to open waters 50 miles off the Pacific and Atlantic coasts to oil and natural gas development, though only if the adjacent states agree to it. Republicans and the White House want to completely lift current restrictions on coastal drilling, and President Bush' veto pen gives them the edge. Discussions on the budget are far overshadowed by the ongoing debate over a $700 billion bailout plan for Wall Street. But the amount of money at stake — including a $488 billion Pentagon funding bill that hasn't seen a second's worth of public debate or review — is almost as great.

POPSPlease don't let your congress pass more unfunded bills This article was the about the first bailout. Now we will have another one, and huge. BUT they say it will be on taxpayers. NO!! It will not be on taxpayers because everyone wants to cut taxes!!!! They will add the cost to the debt, leaving it to implode later. Jeez, people, interest payment on the debt are killing us. PLEASE tell congress to either raise our taxes to pay for this mess if it's really necessary or don't pass the bill.

What I'd like to see is corporate welfare and war profiteering abolished. That ought to free up some funds to invest in ourselves for a change.

Unless Congress acts affirmatively to prevent it, October 1st, 2008 will be a day fittingly described as "American Energy Freedom Day" as those restrictions expire. Now that President Bush has lifted the executive branch moratorium, the only thing prohibiting development of these energy resources is a temporary ban that is set to expire at the end of this fiscal year. We urge you to oppose the creation of any new moratorium for fiscal 2009, even if it is attached to what some people in Washington consider "must-pass" legislation.

POPSBeating a Dead Horse I've commented on this topic many times over the past months, so why not give it one more go. There are two groups responsible for the mortgage mess - the individuals who took out exotic mortgages on houses they couldn't afford, and the financial institutions who sold them those mortgages. I understand we can't let the system fail, but I see no reason why my tax dollars have to go towards helping bail these two groups out. They made terrible decisions. All a bill like this does is reinforce stupid behavior, because if we fail, the government will bail us out. If you had your home re-possessed, it's because you couldn't afford it in the first place. If a financial institution is going down because of all the write-downs they've had to take on bad mortgages, it's because their leadership authorized bad decisions. Are there some exceptions to the above - sure there are. But those aren't the situations that this bill is addressing.

POPSHomeless Veterans Bill Faces Veto Threat Davis-Bacon is a 1931 law that governs pay for public works projects. It requires that employers pay the local prevailing wage -- i.e., what everyone else in the area pays for workers. As hardships for employers go, this isn't one. Bush, in a move so cartoonishly evil that you expect a couple of kids from a Disney movie to show him up in the end, opposes housing for homeless vets for purely ideological reasons. FDR must never, ever be encouraged or he'll just pass more of these laws, I guess -- seriously, trying to figure out what goes on in these guys' heads is a losing proposition. None of it ever makes any damned sense at all.

But veterans now in school will not get the higher amounts right away because lawmakers are giving the Veterans Affairs Department until Aug. 1, 2009, to calculate and pay amounts that will vary by state and by school. Retroactive payments will have to be made. Also, anyone who had not previously enrolled in the GI Bill will have to wait until Aug. 1, 2009, to collect any payments.

In May, Congress passed a farm bill that would raise the minimum amount of food stamps that families receive, starting in October. The bill, which was passed over President Bush’s veto, will also raise for the first time since 1996 the amount of income that families of fewer than four can keep for costs like housing or fuel without having their benefits reduced.
