POPSAll there in my parallel universe another example from the article: "China, which is planning a series of different virtual worlds able to host not tens but hundreds of millions of avatars. The idea is to attract people (as avatars) from around the world to come and buy Chinese goods more cheaply from source. In this way they plan to capture the value added to a shirt that leaves a Chinese factory for a dollar but is sold in London for $20."

POPSDetroit Automakers a Relic of the Past No one in the private sector is willing to pony up a dime for this business plan. GM stock is below its 1946 price, and one investment house has priced it at zero. The Detroit Three are taking advantage of the passage of the $700 billion financial bailout to argue that they, too, need government money to go on. But as Megan McArdle of The Atlantic argues, the finance firms are different. If credit coagulates, everyone suffers, while if the Detroit Three go bankrupt, their shareholders lose their stake, employee and retiree pay and benefits are cut, and real estate values go down in areas where the companies and their suppliers operate -- but life for most of us goes on. McArdle further argues that the capital invested in keeping the hulk of the Detroit Three operating pretty much as they are, unprofitably, will not be available to those whose startups could morph into the Microsofts and FedExes of the future.

POPSYou Unemployed Blue-Collar Workers Can Freeze In The Dark, Too Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. This ought to be a big hit with coal miners. Or, for that matter, anybody else since we currently produce half of our electricity with coal. But hey, candlelight is so romantic. What are we talking about? The ObaMarx’s energy “plan”, that’s what. The plan under which he intends to put the coal business out of business . . . But why don’t we let him speak for himself?: What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there. So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted. http://www.nicedoggie.net/2008/?p=2850

POPSBush Looting Public Wealth. No-Risk Capitalist. There has been no nationalisation, partial or otherwise. American taxpayers have gained no meaningful control over the banks , which is why the banks are free to spend the new money as they wish. At Morgan Stanley , it looks as if much of the windfall will cover this year's bonuses. Citigroup has been hinting it will use its $25bn buying other banks, while John Thain, the chief executive of Merrill Lynch , told analysts: "At least for the next quarter, it's just going to be a cushion." The US government, meanwhile, is reduced to pleading with the banks that they at least spend a portion of the taxpayer windfall for loans - officially, the reason for the entire programme.

POPSIll Health for Small Business To me the most striking statement in the entire article is "Mr. Obama has not released details". A week before the election and he won't say what his plan will require businesses to do??? Sure, because he knows it would cost him votes. After the election he'll be happy to tell us all about it.

POPS Obama And Frank: A Farwell To Arms Caucus for Priorities is a campaign of Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its mission is to “change U.S. budget priorities to reflect a national commitment to education, healthcare, energy independence, job training and deficit reduction — at no additional taxpayer expense — by eliminating funding for unneeded Cold War-era weapons systems.” That will certainly deter a rearming and expansionist Russia, an ambitious China and a dangerous Iran. If Obama wins, the “obsolete Cold War weapons” to be done away with, to Russian and Chinese glee, include the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the F/A-22 Raptor to replace our aging F-15s, the wings of which are literally falling off. The Raptor can fly to and from Iranian nuclear facilities undetected should the need arise, as it very well may at some point.

POPSObama's Health Plan ~ Details Would Make Business Sick
“To all of a sudden whack 6 to 7 percent of payroll costs, forget it,” he said. “If they do that, prices go up and employment goes down because nobody can absorb that.” More from the Times on Team Obama's plan to hide the ball: “We will ask all but the smallest businesses who don’t make a meaningful contribution today to the health coverage of their employees to do so by supporting this new plan,” he said. Left undefined has been what size firms would be exempted, what constitutes a “meaningful contribution,” and how much noncompliant businesses would be required to pay. “We made a decision even before the plan was rolled out not to decide,” said David M. Cutler, a Harvard economist who speaks for the campaign on health care. “It’s not that there’s a decision out there that we’re not telling. It’s literally that we’ve decided not to decide. " Not deciding on the extent of the new business tax is a slick gambit if the press will let them get away with it.

POPSPresidential Candidates Obama and McCain Believe in E-Verify - Background Investigation Blogs No matter what side of the political spectrum the presidential candidates sit on, there is at least one commonality between the two - Electronic Employer Verification Systems. Both Democrat Barak Obama and Republican John McCain both agree that employers will need to continue to utilize some sort of instant electronic verifications solution to check the immigration status of all new hires.

POPSWhat Myriad's Split Means For Gene Diagnostics Myriad's up 7% on news that it's going to split its drug development business from its gene diagnostics business, creating two independent public companies. You'd think that gene-based drugs and gene-based diagnostic tests would be a match made in heaven, right? But so far most companies seem to get hitched to one approach or the other. And it's not really so hard to figure out why. Creating a test and creating a drug both involve huge outlays of expense, and much of the science and regulatory expertise doesn't overlap. Also, having a big success in either field is as rare and difficult as capturing lightning in a bottle. So when you hit a home run in one business, as Myriad has in diagnostics, it is pretty tough to keep it shackled to an effort that is still trying to find its footing, like Myriad's drug development business after the failure of Alzheimer's drug Flurizan.

POPSMcCain's Now Famous: "Joe the Plumber."
The story of 'Joe the Plumber," - McCain's 'Common Man," has sprung many leaks. 1. His name is not Joe. He's Samuel Jacob Wurzelbacher. 2. He's not a licensed plumber. (It would be illegal for him to work as a plumber). 3. He said he didn't want to pay higher taxes when he buys his bosses business, which is worth $265,000.00 -- although his bosses' business is not for sale and taxes are not on net worth, but income. 4. Joe makes $40,000.00 a year and would save money under Obama's tax plan. 5. Joe owes $1,200 in back taxes 6. Joe owes $1,200 in medical bills and Obama's health plan would also have helped him out, 7. Joe made a slightly racial remark, comparing Obama's talk to like watching Sammy Davis Jr. doing a tap dance. 8. Samuel Jacob Wurzelbacher has now done more interviews that VP candidate Sarah Palin. 9. The McCain campaign wants him to join them at their rallies. 10. Real plumbers (their Union) have expressed displeasure at his claims and views.

POPSMcCain Pokes Fun At Himself As Well As "That One" "This campaign needed the common touch of the working man. After all, it began so long ago with the heralded arrival of the man known to Oprah Winfrey as 'The One.' Being a friend and colleague of Barack I just called him 'That One,'" McCain said in reference to his bully-like tactics in the second presidential debate. "He doesn't mind at all. In fact, he even has a pet name for me: 'George Bush.'" In attendance Thursday night were such dignitaries as Sen. Hillary Clinton, Gov. David Paterson, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former Mayor Ed Koch. nd had some fun with MSNBC's Chris Matthews, host of "Hardball." "I told him, maverick I can do, but messiah is above my pay grade," McCain said. . . . . "So, you know I have fun with the media. We all know that the press is really an independent, civic-minded and non-partisan group … like ACORN. video @ wcbstv.com

POPSObama's Real Beef With "Joe The Plumber" Joe the Plumber, opponent of Obama's plan to raise taxes on folks earning more than $250,000 a year because he hopes one day to buy his boss's business and join that lofty income bracket, was the star of last night debate. Obama poo-pooed the whole notion: "He's trying to suggest that a plumber is the guy he's fighting for," Obama said. "How many plumbers you know that are making a quarter-million dollars a year?" But Obama's real problem with plumbers was documented by James Taranto last summer while evaluating Obama's time as a community organizer: These efforts at economic development having failed, Obama "began to focus on providing social services for Altgeld Gardens," a government-owned and -operated apartment complex: "We didn't yet have the power to change state welfare policy, or create local jobs, or bring substantially more money into the schools," wrote. . . . . . .
