Hillary Clinton: US Wants Israel To Stop Building West Bank Settlements 'Forever'

by ratilfar  11-5-2009    4
But Clinton has had to do a lot of explaining since last Saturday, when she stood with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and praised his offer to limit settlement construction without halting it. Clinton has since tried to clarify the remarks, saying that the Israeli offer does not got far enough. Still, she has indicated that the Palestinians should resume negotiations with Israel without a full settlement halt as they demand.

Debacle in Moscow by Charles Krauthammer
merrie
by merrie  10-16-2009    3
And what's come from Obama's single most dramatic foreign policy stroke -- the sudden abrogation of missile defense arrangements with Poland and the Czech Republic that Russia had virulently opposed? For the East Europeans it was a crushing blow, a gratuitous restoration of Russian influence over a region that thought it had regained independence under American protection. But maybe not gratuitous. Some brilliant secret trade-off to get strong Russian support for stopping Iran from going nuclear before it's too late? Just wait and see, said administration officials, who then gleefully played up an oblique statement by President Dmitry Medvedev a week later as vindication of the missile defense betrayal. The Russian statement was so equivocal that such a claim seemed a ridiculous stretch at the time. Well, Clinton went to Moscow this week to nail down the deal. What did she get? "Russia Not Budging On Iran Sanctions: Clinton Unable to Sway Counterpart."

Hard to Imagine, Australia Brings Israel, Iran Together
merrie
by merrie  10-16-2009
of a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East. Contact between Israeli and Iranian officials is sporadic and only takes place at international forums - no formal meetings between the two countries have occurred since the 1979 Iranian revolution. Officials from Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and other regional countries also took part in the three-day meeting and it is believed the talks floated an idea for a further regional conference - possibly hosted by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon - to outline the broad aims of a treaty to create a Middle East nuclear-free zone. Similar ideas have stalled in the past over the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict and questions of security guarantees for Israel. But last month's talks in Egypt attempted to skirt such obstacles by focusing on proposals to safeguard any fissile material in the region that could potentially be used for nuclear weapons.

Historic Suckupness, Poor Judgment

That Nick the Turk is one astute observer. I got whacked with something and spent yesterday on the couch, nose in Robert Harvey’s The War of Wars: The Epic Struggle Between Britain and France: 1789-1815* when not dozing. Fascinating reading with not a few lessons regarding war and politics in general. Now, Obama’s no Bonaparte. They are no matched historical set. But as you examine the totality of Obama’s career to date, there are some curious parallels. Not so much the part about being an outsider shouldering his way in … Napoleon of course was a Corsican with an Italian accent, which made him a foreigner and a provincial bumpkin though integrated into French society through political connections and education. Obama, of Kenyan and white American descent, raised in part overseas, after all was welcomed and acclaimed exactly for reasons of his minority status, due to the nation’s and his political party’s interest in recognizing and elevating

A Letter of Congrats to Pres. Obama and Limbaugh Agrees with Taliban

How disgusting is this? Limbaugh agrees with the Taliban because they are bashing the President of the United States of America on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Talk about a Fifth Column? This is Rush Limbaugh's official reaction to the news that our president was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize: "Our president is a worldwide joke. Folks, do you realize something has happened here that we all agree with the Taliban and Iran about -- and that is he doesn't deserve the award? Now that's hilarious, that I'm on the same side of something with the Taliban." ----- Hey Rush, you may be on the same side as the Taliban but let me inform you, YOU DOG! You're alone in this RANT and you just exposed your true colors as a FIFTH COLUMN bent on bringing America down. IT'S TIME TO STOP LISTENING TO THIS NUTBAG, for goodness sakes! thinkingblue

Rubbish Problem Worsens in Cairo
zizzy
by zizzy  10-2-2009    1
More at clip source. Today, we've not had any water in the neighborhood where I live. This has never happened in the two years I've lived here. The authorities are fixing the water main: I doubt we'll have water by tomorrow morning. Bottled water is unhealthy, but I am happy to have it today. About the rubbish pile up: In the affluent and powerful areas like where I live rubbish is not piling up in the streets. And I doubt this is a problem in New Cairo or 6th October. My friends in Giza do not enjoy the same privilege. If the government really cared about public hygiene they would have cleaned up this city long ago. Egyptians deserve better.

Obama's Move: Iran and Afghanistan
merrie
by merrie  9-30-2009    3
United States between April and September. In his speech to the Islamic world from Cairo, he planned to show a desire not only to find common ground, but also to acknowledge shortcomings in U.S. policy in the region. With the appointment of special envoys George Mitchell (for Israel and the Palestinian territories) and Richard Holbrooke (for Pakistan and Afghanistan), Obama sought to build on his opening to the Islamic world with intense diplomatic activity designed to reshape regional relationships. It can be argued that the Islamic masses responded positively to Obama’s opening " it has been asserted to be so and we will accept this " but the diplomatic mission did not solve the core problem. Mitchell could not get the Israelis to move on the settlement issue, and while Holbrooke appears to have made some headway on increasing Pakistan’s aggressiveness toward the Taliban, no fundamental shift has occurred in the Afghan war.

Modern Epic Tales: Unintended Consequence
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-28-2009
Kill 300,000 pigs in Egypt used to help eat garbage and kept in "herds" generally fewer than ten pigs to "control" swine flu and what do you get? The good possibility of some other disease breaking out because of piling up garbage and an ensuing growth in rodent and fly populations. Swine flu developed within industrially grown herds of thousands of pigs in unsanitary conditions, which is a formula for creating the chance of a disease breakout. The unintended consequence of the use of pigs kept in small numbers by families who collected and recycled garbage for income? A safer Cairo? Why'd they really do it? They have had 30+ deaths from avian flu arising from "farming" too many chickens in unsanitary conditions for the world poultry market. Had to look good at something but not threaten the income of poultry traders. Add to this that the garbage pickers are minority Coptic Christians and the government probably thought no one would care. But now the garbage is piling up

Horray! Nawal el Saadawi Returns to Egypt
zizzy
by zizzy  9-24-2009
I haven't seen any of her books at Al Diwan Bookstore since I've returned to Egypt. She is no fan of Pres. Barack Obama. “I’m against the capitalist, patriarchal, racist system that is ruling America and Europe, and is ruling us also, but that doesn’t mean I’m a communist. I’m a critic of the communist thought as well as all religions, as nothing is holy for me, Dr el Saadawi said. Sheikh Youssef el Badri, a radical cleric in Egypt, said that a law office was considering how to pursue Dr el Saadawi legally, now that she is back. “I have to chase her legally because she transgressed God in her books and interviews ... She has insulted Islam, the religion of one-third of the world’s population. “People like her, who are attacking religion, will encourage other people to become daring on God and Islam. We are not trying to take revenge, we’re hoping to lead her back to the right path.".
