Using AI to find biomarkers of calorie restriction
Mohir
by Mohir  9-17-2008
Novel artificial intelligence methodologies were applied to analyze gene expression microarray data gathered from mice under a calorie restriction (CR) regimen. The data were gathered from three previously published mouse studies; these datasets were merged together into a single composite dataset for the purpose of conducting a broader-based analysis. The result was a list of genes that are important for the impact of CR on lifespan, not necessarily in terms of their individual actions but in terms of their interactions with other genes. Furthermore, a map of gene interrelationships was provided, suggesting which intergene interactions are most important for the effect of CR on life extension.

How your inner athlete makes you smarter
thekay
by thekay  8-7-2008
also from article: Even when we are sitting or lying down, our bodies send our brains regular updates about how our limbs are positioned. When we, say, stand and begin walking, these electric messages need to be sent more often. (Knee is bent, straight, bent, straight ...) Move fast enough and the electrical activity doesn't have time to dissipate between each message. It begins building up in the brain and eventually triggers a release of chemicals called growth factors. Growth factors are like manna for neurons. "They make neurons stronger, healthier and improve their ability to learn," Cotman said. In the presence of growth factors, new neurons are born and old ones sprout, grow and form better connections with each other. Blood vessels blossom along side the neurons, giving them quick access to glucose and other nutrients. All this, in turn, improves our ability to think, learn and remember. As Cotman said, exercise "builds the pipes" for improved cognition.

Red wine's resveratrol may help battle obesity
Mohir
by Mohir  6-16-2008
In the cell-based study, they found that resveratrol inhibited the pre-fat cells from increasing and prevented them from converting into mature fat cells. Also, resveratrol hindered fat storage. Most interesting, according to Fischer-Posovszky, was that resveratrol reduced production of certain cytokines (interleukins 6 and 8), substances that may be linked to the development of obesity-related disorders, such as diabetes and clogged coronary arteries. Also, resveratrol stimulated formation of a protein known to decrease the risk of heart attack. Obesity decreases this substance, called adiponectin.

Every Meal is Important !
healthyself
by healthyself  3-30-2008
So if you fall off of your foodcombining sense, get right back on track with the next meal ! Don't wait ! You can easily let one meal turn into a week of poor combinations! Nip it quickly! Be your own best supporter! Get your chart out and plan the next meal so you are ready! Decide to "combine correctly" and plan it out ! Write it down, carry it with you when you go shopping. Prepare your meals as you shop. Buy foods that you will combine correctly. Think about how good you feel when you eat correctly! That is how good your internal body feels too!
