Berkeley College:Arabs Attack Jewish Students
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 3:37 AM    1
Husam Zakharia, who also attacked one of the performers, Yehuda De Sa. The fight was finally broken up by John Moghtader, a senator in the UC Berkelely student organization. Police were called in and arrested Zakharia along with others from his group, charging them with battery. Witnesses said that the Arab students shouted anti-Semitic curses and epithets throughout the incident, calling the Jews “Nazis” and “dogs,” and threatening to kill them. According to one witness, as many as 20 anti-Israel students participated in the attacks. In a statement, the Zionist Freedom Alliance said “we call on state officials, the President of the University of California, the Chancellor, the Dean of Students, faculty, and the student body to take a unified stand against the continued harassment of Jewish and pro-Israel students on this campus, particularly by members of Students for Justice in Palestine,” the anti-Israel group whose leaders began the incitement and attacked the concert goers.

Stretching: The Truth
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  11-3-2008
If you’re like most of us, you were taught the importance of warm-up exercises back in grade school, and you’ve likely continued with pretty much the same routine ever since. Science, however, has moved on. Researchers now believe that some of the more entrenched elements of many athletes’ warm-up regimens are not only a waste of time but actually bad for you. The old presumption that holding a stretch for 20 to 30 seconds — known as static stretching — primes muscles for a workout is dead wrong. It actually weakens them. In a recent study conducted at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, athletes generated less force from their leg muscles after static stretching than they did after not stretching at all. Other studies have found that this stretching decreases muscle strength by as much as 30 percent. Also, stretching one leg’s muscles can reduce strength in the other leg as well, probably because the central nervous system rebels against the movements. “There is a neuromuscular in

Now this is what Second Life is for...
Lara Nieberding
by Lara Nieberding  10-30-2008
"the ideas and visions for students here is endless. Economics majors can do research and learn the values of the Linden Dollar (L$) - Second Life's general source of currency. Psychology majors can meet new people and talk to them about their experiences and how it relates to Second Life. Art majors can go behind the scenes making their own buildings or putting their newest creations in a digital gallery. Business majors can follow the trends of the Second Life marketplace and marketing majors can learn how it all works."

Praying For Palin
debbyski
by debbyski  10-25-2008    3
"Perhaps there are some here who also sense that what's being lost is more than just a single election. The fact that the GOP ticket is trailing behind despite the addition of Palin clearly proves that while conservative Christians may be a formidable force in American politics, they can't elect a president by themselves. The right-wing evangelicals won in previous years because they joined a Republican coalition that also included hawkish neocons, working-class "Reagan Democrats," libertarians, and old-fashioned fiscal conservatives. And some of those groups have clearly had enough. They are departing the flock in disgust with the Republican Party, which could leave the GOP ever more dependent on the Christian right. "

Scandal of the Education Profit Machine
abailart
by abailart  10-24-2008
My sense is that this is not peculiar to the US. The imperative to fill courses can lead to a wicked student guidance service, Some say that those who manage to graduate have worthless qualifications since the imperative to show results lowers the educational achievement threshold; on the latter I am not qualified to comment.
