If you expect to die at any point in the future...
Lexica
by Lexica  7-8-2008
We joke about doing unhealthy things, saying "yeah, this'll knock 5 years off my life expectancy" as we dig into the giant plate of fettucine Alfredo or 24-ounce steak or hot fudge sundae. What we tend to forget is that it's not a matter of reaching a certain age, and then *click!* your time's up and you go. Instead, it's often a matter of increasing levels of illness, pain, and dependency on others. Don't eat a healthy diet or exercise because somebody else says you "should" -- do it because you want to have as many good years as possible while you're here.

Wasn't the smoking ban going to destroy bars? Guess what?
Lexica
by Lexica  6-13-2008    3
From the 6/11/08 East Bay Express: "Even the Bush administration's own surgeon general has concluded that there are no risk-free levels of secondhand smoke, and the federal Environmental Protection Agency considers it to be among the most lethal carcinogens. According to a 2006 report by the California EPA, secondhand smoke kills more than 50,000 people nationwide every year, including 3,400 deaths from lung cancer and 46,000 from heart disease. The costs to society are also staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States spends more than $167 billion each year in smoke-related healthcare costs. That's a price tag of $3,702 per adult smoker. A recent study found that smoking outdoors poses risks to nonsmokers, too. Stanford University researchers discovered that under certain conditions, such as sitting near a smoker on a park bench or in an outdoor dining area, the dangers of secondhand-smoke exposure are essentially equal to those ind

Surprisingly this hasn't made it to Clipmarks yet. I find this ludicrous...."Blame is most often placed on inadequate sex education, from parents and from schools focusing too much on abstinence-only programs." That is extremely sad. Parents not teaching their children about NOT having sex is a complete shame, but the Media (all of it!!) coupled with the collapse of the principle of 'shame' and responsibility have contributed to this disaster among our young girls.
