POPSAurora Borealis in Marquette, Michigan Spaceweather says: "...Last night a gust of solar wind sent auroras rippling down from Canada into the United States. Shawn Malone sends this picture from Marquette, Michigan... "There was a nice burst of aurora activity right after sunset," says Malone who captured the scene using his Canon 5D. "The thawing snowbanks in the foreground were not the most scenic, but I had to act quickly to catch the auroras." The solar wind continues to blow and more geomagnetic storms are possible tonight. Northern (and not-so-northern) sky watchers should be alert for auroras."

POPSPeace symbol - 50 years on Jerry Horton's now-famous peace symbol is 50 years old. It's first public appearance was at the Aldermaston March in 1958, organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament to protest against nuclear weapons. Later it was widened to a general peace symbol, and not simply against nuclear weapons, and has been used by people protesting against wars in general, such as the Vietnam War and the current Iraqi-American War.

POPSIlluminating Beauty, Illustrating Harmony Interactive Show at the source. Illuminating Beauty, Illustrating Harmony: A Gallery celebrating the 25th Anniversary of The Institute of Ismaili Studies ...invites the viewer to the large and complex subject of the artistic and intellectual heritage of Islam. Ranging in date from the ninth to the nineteenth century, and produced in lands as far westward as Tunisia and as far eastward as China and India, the artefacts reflect the great diversity and range of a distinctive visual culture with its own unique artistic language. ‘Illuminating’ and ‘illustrating’ are appropriate from with the perspectives of calligraphy and the arts of the book, and are also linked to notions of knowledge and learning in Islam. A significant number of items in this exhibition are, therefore, related to the arts of the book, in particular the Qur’an.

POPSThe Brazilian Orkut Rule This is true to a point...but Brazilians also seem to get into a technological rut. Hence they are still using Orkut and MSN when both of these "services" are pretty much on the junk heap of their respective sectors in the rest of the world. Another example is the continued use of pirated Microsoft Windows OS's, when perfectly good and cheaper (or free) alternatives are quite available.

POPSKaren Hess on Food, Faith, and that "Dithering Idiot" Julia Child ...(Orgasm) I have a soft spot for cantankerous Americans with borderline personalities. Probably because I am one myself. In this regards, Karen Hess is a true blue, red-blooded American original. She called Julia Child a dithering idiot! But I think it is interesting, the characteristics of the classic American crank: Surly iconoclasm A hate for anyone up on top of the hill A pastoral nostalgia for the past A mania for the rustic and natural And a certain "messianic fervor." It is interesting that what is true of Hess' thoughts on food is also true of many other Americans on many other subjects.
