Big Oil's Charm Offensive
spirithiker
by spirithiker  11-12-2008    2
The money grabbers are putting on masks of altruism, hoping we won’t notice their pockets bulging with our dollars – and hoping we won't demand that Congress take away the billions of dollars they get each year in tax subsidies. Oil company image ads aren't fooling anyone. Their attempts to appear touchie-feelie are as hopeless as hanging an air freshener on the tail of a hog. Couldn't have said it better myself. By the way, notice how the gas prices fell after people stopped consumming so much gas. Let's keep this in mind when prices start going up again. It truly is all about supply and demand.

The Surprising Success of the Associated Press
Joshua Zumbrun
by Joshua Zumbrun  11-11-2008
There are relatively few success stories in early 21st-century journalism, especially in the newspaper sector. It's interesting--and, to someone who cares about reported journalism, something of a relief--that the Associated Press is still doing so well.

Godless Gaffe: North Carolina Candidate Dole’s ‘Faith-Based’ Attack Backfires
Karzdan
by Karzdan  11-6-2008
I'm saddened to see such a blatant bigoted attack on fellow Americans. And I'm also saddened when no one stood up for those whom she truly slandered, the Atheists. Who cares if the person she named in the attack is actually a Christian? It's bad form to misrepresent the person, but to discredit the multitude of Atheist and to have no one point out that Atheists are Americans to. I now have to fight the bile rising in my through. Dole, you don't deserve any respect, and Hagan, Sham on you for taking the low road, and not standing up for ALL of the fellow North Carolinians you profess to represent.

Traumatised Veterans get no CARE - just platitudes.
notareargunner
by notareargunner  11-5-2008
This proves the lie that Labour cares for veterans. With 1 in 5 prisoners being former servicemen, there has to be some reason for this. What changes caring warriors into mindless thugs? Insults, neglect and total indifference. I charge all the major charities be they Royal British Legion, Soldiers,Sailors , Airmens Family Association to come up to the mark and put your money where your mouths are, and stop overpaying former generals and territorial officers for doing what volunteer carers do for nothing...care for the needy former soldier.

The Hypocrisy Of The Messiah: Slum-Dwelling Family Members
merrie
by merrie  10-29-2008    1
The US press has repeatedly rehearsed Mr Obama’s extraordinary odyssey, but the other side of the family’s American experience has only been revealed in parts. Just across town from where Mr Obama made history as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, some of his closest blood relatives have confronted the harshness of immigrant life in America. A second relative believed to be the long-lost “Uncle Omar” described in the book was beaten by armed robbers with a “sawed-off rifle” while working in a corner shop in the Dorchester area of the city. He was later evicted from his one-bedroom flat for failing to pay $2,324.20 (£1,488) arrears, according to the Boston Housing Court.

Hab 3:19 The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

"In exchange for the decoding of their DNA, participants agree to make it available to all — along with photographs, their disease histories, allergies, medications, ethnic backgrounds and a trove of other traits, called phenotypes, from food preferences to television viewing habits." The project has drawn criticism from scientists and bioethicists who caution that even its highly educated volunteers cannot understand the practical and psychological risks of disclosing information long regarded as quintessentially private."

Are American Voters Stupid or Rationally Ignorant?
blueridge
by blueridge  10-13-2008    4
Americans vote ignorantly because they willingly limit what they research because there is little incentive for one person who cannot individually make very much difference. This also explains why information from another viewpoint, or party, is rashly dismissed out of hand without consideration or deliberation, for mere convenience. Listen to this short podcast from CATO for the interesting analysis which has alot of merit. This is where Democracy fails, and why Presidents (like Bush) can be elected with less than 23% of potential voters (about 50% eligible do not vote for various reasons, including disgust): the rational decisions of individuals create a dysfunctional collective outcome

Toddler Planet and Imaginary Wealth
papananook
by papananook  10-10-2008    1
The industrialized world is still incredibly rich without it. If we were all (particularly the people at the top) willing to accept a little less, and stop trying to stick somebody else with the entire loss, we'd all be fine. But apparently this type of behavior—something I've dubbed "not being a three year-old toddler"—is beyond the capability of humanity. We'd prefer to suffer enormously instead.
