POPS"Climate change 'doomed ancient Argyll site' "
continues: But archaeologists have identified a period of almost 1,000 years in which no monuments were erected and the population virtually disappeared. Alison Sheridan, head of early prehistory at the National Museum of Scotland, said: “Kilmartin Glen is one of the richest archaeological areas in Scotland, with a very high concentration of ritual sites.” She added that the earliest activity dated back to hunter-gatherers about 4500BC, who left behind nothing more than a few pits, charcoal and some flint. It was a sacred landscape from at least as early as 3700BC until as late as 1100BC. Dr Sheridan said: “It was a place for ceremony, for burying people, and observing the movements of the Sun and the Moon. We are not too certain what happened between 1100BC and 200BC. A hoard of swords has been found and a few artefacts buried as gifts to the gods in the late Bronze Age between 1000 and 750BC. But there are few structures and no settlements. POPSDid ice on Mars ever melted ?? Preliminary results from an experiment that baked a soil sample in one of Phoenix's test ovens failed to yield evidence of water. A data glitch on the lander this week prevented scientists from getting the results right away from the last testing phase. Water is a prerequisite for life, but it's just one piece of the equation. Scientists generally agree that organic carbon and an energy source like the sun are also considered necessary ingredients. Mars today is arid and dusty, constantly bombarded by radiation and with no apparent trace of water on its surface. But carvings of channels and gullies on the Martian surface suggest a wetter past. Some scientists speculate that water may have evaporated into the atmosphere and the rest trapped beneath the surface in the form of ice. "The holy grail is to find water near the surface of Mars," said astrobiologist Mitch Sogin of the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole, Mass., who is not part of the mission.

POPSGood Friday Today is Good Friday, the day marking the execution of Jesus Christ. Catholic tradition holds that the faithful should remember the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus on this day. St. Francis of Assisi created a list of 14 "Stations of the Cross," to help his students remember the chronology of events. I wasn't raised in a Catholic household, but a good many of my friends in school were Catholic. I knew of the stations of the cross, and I've seen the pictures, statues and carvings in various churches, but I didn't really know the stations themselves. List Universe has thoughtfully listed the stations, fully illustrated. Timely and helpful. Link
